Rayes tilted his head and frowned.
He looked at the gap and the roof beyond it. He looked back at Gale, and smiled as inspiration struck him.
He made sure Gale was distracted by the gap, coiled and snatched the paper and charcoal from the artist, then sprinted to the ledge and sailed back over the drop.
“There’s a trick to it,” he said across the alley. “Don’t look at the ground. Look at where you’re gonna land.”
Rayes looked around and spotted a chimney a few feet from the rim of the roof. He approached, carefully set the paper and charcoal upon it so they wouldn’t get dirty, then walked back to the edge and held his arm out once again.
“How ‘fraid of falls are you? I suppose that paper and black stuff ain’t much to you, but you want them back you’re gonna have to get ‘em yourself.”
You are a bastard, a small voice said, and Rayes grinned. He probably was, but this was intriguing. This man had a spark in him as demonstrated in the fight, but that had been forced. Would it surface again of his own volition? |

Ugh! He knew it! He knew he was going to pull something like that off! Why did he even trust this man for a moment?
Gale snapped,"Hey!!" He reached to grab it back but he had already took off and jumped over the edge. He groaned in frustration. This guy just had to push him didn't he?
After Rayes explained his "trick" Gale huffed, blowing some of his blonde hair back. Now he had to jump. Gale looked at the obnoxious man with a hint of annoyance before looking back towards the gap between them. If he mustered enough courage to jump out a window to end his life he wouldn't have trouble having enough of it to spare so he could jump over a drop and get his stuff back right? He could look at it this way. If he jumped over, it would be one step closer to strangling the man.
He took a few steps back so he would have enough speed. Gale let out a breath thoughtfully. Moments later, Gale sprinted towards the ledge.
It was just a ledge. It couldn't grab him or anything. He was fine.
Jumping with a grunt from effort, Gale leaped as far as he could, which proved to be enough to make it across safely. Stumbling a bit after he landed, Gale froze as if to make sure he was steady. He looked over at Rayes, unaware that he was smiling.
Straightening himself out, Gale went over and grabbed his paper and pencil. "It's called charcoal. Maybe I should teach you something about art." Gale told him, holding his "prizes" firmly so it would be more difficult to be taken away.

The irritation was clear on Gale’s face, but Rayes’ smile didn’t lessen. The artist backed up. He eyed the gap. Then he jumped over it.
And completely ignored Ray’s offered hand, but he probably would have snatched it out of the way anyway.
Rayes clapped. “Well done, Bloodeye!”
Gale continued to huff and Ray continued to chuckle.
“Nah,” he said in response to what was probably said in sarcasm. “I’ve never been the artsy type. Can’t draw. At all.”
He looked out across the hills of rooftops spread before them, looking for the highest point he could find.
There. Looked like some kind of watchtower, and though he squinted he couldn’t make out any odd shapes that would indicate people. If they were lucky, it would stay that way by the time they got over there, and it wasn’t that far away.
“Come on, we ain’t there yet,” he said, jerking his head in the direction that he wanted to go and setting off at an easy jog. |

The longer he moved, the faster Rayes became. His jog turned into a lope, then a run, then a sprint. He raced happily over the rooftops, reveling in the danger of what he was doing. He was not suicidal; he kept to the path he could see and stayed away from the edges, but so many things were hidden behind so many other things that chimneys and gaps would pop out at him without warning, forcing him to change course at the last minute. He didn’t even notice that he was laughing.
He skidded to a halt at the place where the watchtower joined with the rest of Zeltiva’s roofs. Up close it didn’t look nearly as magnificent as it had from afar. The stone was rough and crumbling, the remains of what must have been a flag was now only tatters that fluttered forlornly in the wind. There were a couple windows just a few feet up from where Ray’s knees were, and even the wood that had been used to board it up looked old and worn.
“Here,” he said over his shoulder, not quite sure if Gale was actually there or not. |

Gale followed cautiously as Rayes and he jumped along the roofs. He eyed the gaps carefully while running up to them to make sure he could make them, and tried to keep up with Rayes. As Rayes got faster, Gale tried to speed up as well. He did a fairly good job at it till he started to sprint and Gale started to tire. He was going to tell him to slow down but heard his laughs. Gale rolled his eyes with a hint of a smirk. Best not disturb him. It's not like he didn't know where they were going and it wasn't like the streets where he can turn a corner and vanish.
Gale slowed down to a pace he was comfortable with and jumped the gaps, getting more use to it with every leap. Every once in a while he would stumble on his landing and land on his knees or side but he just got up to follow. Sometimes pausing briefly to brush off little rocks and dirt from his side or something, since he now had cut the blood stains off, his sleeves now going all the way down to the bottom of the shirt.
By the time he caught up to Rayes as he halted in front of the Watchtower, Gale was breathing heavily but gave Rayes a small smile. He looked up towards the top of the Tower, his hands now on his hips again, his paper and pencil still locked firmly between his fingers.
