Arcane Protection (Solo)

[Kabrin Road] The weaving of the third layer of additional wards.

(This is a thread from Mizahar's fantasy role play forum. Why don't you register today? This message is not shown when you are logged in. Come roleplay with us, it's fun!)

While Sylira is by far the most civilized region of Mizahar, countless surprises and encounters await the traveler in its rural wilderness. Called the Wildlands, Syliran's wilderness is comprised of gradual rolling hills in the south that become deep wilderness in the north. Ruins abound throughout the wildlands, and only the well-marked roads are safe.

Day 50, Summer of 512 AV
Early Evening
Kabrin Road, The Wildlands

Eridanus lay in his tent, exhausted from the day's event. It was a mixture of riding and marching, with some rest in between, and when they set up camp he had been heavily involved in helping to create the necessary wards as a contracted shielder. He had not been the primary caster of course, for the knights had their own in-house shielders for that. However, he had been one of the group shielders, and had contributed greatly in the double-checking of the shields for the presence of flaws and defects.

However, this was not the time to be slacking, for he had finally decided on setting up the third layer of protection. It had taken him days of not only reserving djed, but also of tireless thinking to figure out flaws in his current wards. He had finally decided upon a few issues that presented itself after days of brainstorming, and he would act on them now.

Sitting back up cross-legged, he offered a prayer to Wysar for the discipline and mental clarity that he would need, presenting himself and his deeds for inspection as he did so.

Exhaling deeply as he meditated, he extracted djed from his body, shaping it over his body and over the current shield, imagining the idea of multiple metal plates being sealed together at extreme temperatures. This formed the foundation of shield stacking.

Eridanus was aware of the presence of leechers. Having been forcefully and cruelly initiated many years before, he understood the capabilities of wizards well-versed in this discipline. Shields were a djed construct, and as such were highly vulnerable to the ministrations of leechers. What he did would partially address the problem, and made it at least partially vulnerable to powerful leechers, rather than completely vulnerable.

Drawing from his understanding behind the concept of the discipline, he proceeded to program the first instruction accordingly. In order to implement a task against leeching, he had to first require the glyphs to recognize the touch of a leecher. Weaving the djed threads to create a basic focus glyph, he proceeded a concentrate on leeching, drawing from the energy of the shield but stopping when the first spark had been initiated.

Next he dissolved the focus glyph into the tapestry of the instruction-space, using it as an example as to the touch of a leecher. Next he wrote the idea of djed being drawn ou from the shield forcefully and unnaturally, and tasked the shield to reject that action, instead countering by remaining firm and pushing the djed back into their structure if a leeching operation was executed.

As someone with a little proficiency in voiding, Eridanus understood the basic principles and capabilities of the discipline. It made use of djed to spark the dissolution of mass in a concentrated area, thereby creating a portal to the cold dimension of the Void. While he was already protected against undisguised djed, he would be fully vulnerable to a fully casted portal.

In that case, his task here was two-fold. Firstly, the gravitational pull or push of such portals must be denied. In order to do so, he had to implement the idea of such a pull. As he lacked proper mastery in the art, he could not provide the necessary technique expertise in this conceptualization. Instead, what he could was to work around this problem, which was to provide an example from which he could expand his instructions upon.

Similar to what he did with leeching, he first created a simple focus sigil within the instruction-space of the shield, then placed his open palm before it. Concentrating deeply as he drew from his advanced meditation techniques, he transferred the emptiness of his mind into an emptiness of the physical realm, drawing matter away from the focal point of the sigil and creating a tiny void. Maintaining that intensity, he pooled more djed in order to input a weak magical pull to the void. Before it collapsed from his inability to maintain the spell due to inexperience, he quickly dissipated the sigil, integrating the general magical signatures throughout the instruction space. It was like converting an applied phenomena to tangible data.

Working from this as a foundation, he tasked the shield to protect against such a pull. Using a Glyph of Polarity, he flipped the idea of a pull into that of a push, and tasked the shield against that accordingly. Finally, he grasped the concept of the void itself, and instructed the shield to maintain its physical structure. A void was basically the absence of normality, rather than the presence of a portal. By addressing this reality directly, the shield would prevent a void from being formed anywhere within its shield of influence, even preventing a portal from moving into anywhere within it.

As the scholar returned his attention to the rest of the shield, he realized that due to the very detailed and specific nature of his tasking implementation, he only had one more space left. One taken up by leeching, while three were taken up by voiding. Or more specifically, one by the actual void, one against magical pulling, and one against magical pushing.

As he debated his options, he finally decided to settle on auras. To be specific, everyone and everything had auras that emanated from their bodies, whether they liked it or not, whether the auras were strong or weak. Wizards were able to subtly detect uses of magic through the unconscious interaction of these auras, while Aurists were able to do so much more to these auras.

In order to prevent his cards from being shown, figuratively speaking, he had to encompass his aura within the shield. Unfortunately, he realized that he could not do so, for it was out of the limitations of shielding. Instead, what he could do was to narrow the intended effects to the shield itself. Auristics was not a simple one-way trip; observation was a two-way affair. There was a sort of interaction, even if invisible, interaction between the observer and the observee, in order for information to be read. Using the same application in the idea of denying vision by blocking light, he applied this idea djed-wise, blocking djed-infused light in order to deny the use of Auristics from reading any information from the shield itself.

Of course, it was not possible to completely remove all of these signals, and so he added additional glyphs to scramble the rest of the escaping signals, thereby ensuring that only much more superior Aurists were able to decrypt and read the details in the shield.

With that done, he completed the shield, finalizing the stacking as he integrated it with the other shield already present on his body. He did the usual reading over with Auristics, checking in detail for any flaws in the system, stopping only when he was satisfied that it was working as intended.

A wave of accomplishment filled the ethaefal's body as fatigue finally washed over him, and the exhausted moon child collapsed comfortably in his bedroll, dreaming of moons and magic.
