Coren had been outside completely by chance when the incident had happenend, trying to figure out how he would try to convince the people of the snowsong hold to teach him carpentry, but the fact that a crowd was gathering just outside the icewall gates proved to much for his curious nature to resist and he walked with them to see what the fuss was about.
When he heard that a icewatch was dead he gave a shrug, it happened in the harsh life up north with so many dangerous creatures around. But when the guard giving the explination followed up with the fact it was a single sabretooth that attacked he couldn't help but to find it plain weird. He wasn't somebody who did a lot with animals, nor was he somebody who really knew a lot about animals in the first place. But even he knew that a single animal never attacked a group. Unless the group looked weak, not a word he would use to describe the icewatch, or unless the animal itself was really desperate. But sabretooth's where one of the apex predators around here.. Or at least he thought so, so how would a creature like that be desperate enough to attack an icewatch patrol? No matter how much he thought about it, he couldn't figure it out. But he knew one thing, this wasn't a good sign. |

It was mere chance that Inessa happened to be at the gates when the guards made their return, plying her trade as a musician with her lute. As they came to the gates with the fallen man in toe, her song abruptly halted, cut short halfway through. She dared a few steps closer to the Icewatch group, keeping a respectable distance as she stood on her toes to look them all over with blue eyes. As her sight confirmed what the guards were saying, her shoulders sank, a frown spreading across her lips. The north was cruel and unforgiving to the foolish, of course. But the Icewatch was not composed of idiots who travelled alone. An armed man among fellows had been slain. Eyes quivering, she stepped away from the crowd after hearing the poor news, pulling her fur cloak around herself tightly. Her thoughts began to dwell upon the situation. What could possibly be going on that such would occur? What would drive one of the greatest predators of the region to such desperation? Perhaps the beast was just hungry, or foolish, or angered. Or... or something! No matter what she told herself, a sense of fear lingered over her. Her song was silenced for the rest of the day. |

The days leading up to that one blurred into each other, but that day, everything changed.
Sodrel walked with Amaya at her heel, wandering through the crowds by the gate. They’d both been cooped up inside all day and desperately needed the fresh air.
She folded her arms in front of her chest as she walked, keeping the worst of the winds off her skin, when Amaya’s pace suddenly slowed and she began to whine. Sodrel's eyes followed the direction of Amaya’s gaze. There, the edge of a thick crowd was growing.
From where she stood she could hear the whispers on their lips, but she couldn’t make out what anyone was saying. She unfolded her arms and ran her long fingers over the hair on the back of Amaya’s head, calming her, before walking over to the group so she could hear what was happening.
No one seemed to really know what was going on. Everyone had something different to say. By the time she’d followed the story to the other side of the crowd, she could see for herself.
She watched as a guard brought in a body on a stretcher. Her hand flew up to cover her mouth. Another brave guard lost their life. She felt terrible for the distraught kelvic looking over the body. The season was already shaping up to be a rough one.
She tugged Amaya back from the edge, out of the way, to let them pass. As she did, she overheard another guard telling one of the men in the crowd that a single Sabertooth had done the killing. A single one? That can't be right.
Her eyes fell again on the mourning kelvic and her heart melted for him. A single one was all it took, it seemed. |

The build up of a crowd like plaque in the arteries was what attracted Veizor to the action, slowly trudging through the white blanket of icy specks that waved in his face, the group of people beginning to be less of silhouettes and actual features available for viewing. Thankfully, someone of relatively the same age had been turning away from the gates, walking in the opposite direction but still coming towards Veizor. A small wave and quickened pace slowed down the other person, now seeing to be an average height boy with purple, teal tinted eyes that the Vantha had seen around the Frostfawn hold many types while walking through Avanthal.
"Hey, mind to tell me whats up?" Veizor asked, fists balled up on his hips, using his chin to point towards the general direction. The other boy put his hands on the mage's shoulder, soft touch that was necessary for dealing with animals and such. "It seems like a wild animal attacked the Icewatch patrol and succeeded in killing one of them. I am going to go report it, see if a party could be sent out to investigate," he noted, before nodding and walking back to his hold.
"Hmph, I'll have to go and think of a tale to bring this to a bigger audience, and to state the facts!" he thought to himself, sense of justice in wanting to help them. The irony was, his tale would simply exaggerate the happenings and be far from accurate other than the fact someone died. A Vantha's life was too fun. |

by Sliver on September 16th, 2012, 11:21 pm
She smelled the fear of the crowd just as the tang of fresh blood and the musk of bears slid into her nostrils. She might not have the appearance of most Vantha, but Sliver made her way through the crowd shoulders squared, jaw set, and gaze serious, something she had already picked up from her fellow Icewatch members, and civilians parted for her as she made her way to her compatriots. She needn't ask what happened, stoic gazes communicated to her deeper than words.
Her gaze caught the bear who was following his fallen bondmate. Their gazes caught only for a moment, but the sorrow contained in the deep brown depths, her own sympathy hanging on the surface of her pupils...The bear inclined his head then continued forward. Sliver bit her lip and rotated just as she heard the explanation. A Sabretooth. She had been warned of them, but also reassured that they housed themselves in the wastes, and rarely bothered with the Icewatch unless provoked. Her nose twitched, dissatisfied with the unknowing this death brought to the city. She found one of her superiors, who gave her a curt nod and directed her back to patrols around the edge of the city. She snorted her ascent and turned her back on the amassed, licking her teeth in anxious thought. |

by Ilhor Skyglow on September 23rd, 2012, 10:20 am
Ilhor was returning home from work, especially cheerful and upbeat, after having made significant progress with his latest assignment. Though it was getting rather late and the snowfall was picking up, he decided to take the long way home, that passed near the Icewall Gates, hoping to catch a glimpse of the serene scenery beyond.
Nearing the gates, Ilhor noticed something odd for this time of the day and the deteriorating weather conditions, "Too many people", he thought, "something's wrong". He quickly forgot his entire plan about a nice, quiet walk, and scanned the perimeter for a good vantage point above the gathering crowd. Noticing some blocks of icestone arranged in a line near him, he approached them and swiftly climbed on top.
At first, he couldn't make out anything weird, just some Icewatch guards returning from a patrol. Yet, there was something weird, one of them appeared to carry stretcher, though he couldn't make out from that distance any details. Luckily (or not), the guards seemed to be approaching nearer, so he focused to see what was going on. And then he saw it, his eyes instinctively widening, his mouth opening to let out a smothered gasp. The guards were carrying a human body.
Before having any time to process what that really meant, the guards that carried the stretcher stopped just under him, and one of them said to an old man at the side of the road "We were out on a routine patrol when a Talderan Sabretooth attacked us. It was strange, usually the sabretooths don’t bother us unless they are in groups, they’re smarter than that. But this one just decided to take on our whole group on its lonesome. It was really weird. Unfortunately, it got to Yurlin before we could react."
Sabretooths killing Icewatch guards? Ilhor always thought Avanthal safe, even during the havoc caused by the Djed Storm the Icewatch have managed to keep the peace in and the wildlife out.
"Something is really wrong... I need to learn more", he thought, and climbed down the stones as swiftly as he has climbed them up.

by Druna on September 23rd, 2012, 2:15 pm
Druna's world was turning upside down again. She stood within the crowd as voices hushed as the party made its way into the city. The salty smell of blood, followed by the sweeter smell of death. Her heart raced as she could see the bear that was covered in blood, he held the same longing look on his face she once wore. With out a second glace, she pushed her way to the front of the crowd, being a bit rough with the people that stood in her way, practically throwing the more stubborn ones. She didn't even take notice that one man she shoved back, was starring daggers at her.
Please, Please, please! Let it not be... She pleaded in her head as she seen the stretcher. A body was wrapped in white cloth, a very human body. Her eyes solidified in horror. The Icewatch member was dead. The bear that followed left with out his bond mate. She took in a shaky breath.
"...routine patrol when a Talderan Sabretooth attacked us. It was strange, usually the..." She over heard one of the Icewatch members say. The woman's voice fading out, Druna didn't want to listen to more, she new the predators of the wilds normally stayed clear of an Icewatch party. So why? She didn't have time to find an answer, for her eyes locked with her brethren. The pain reflected in her own expression.
"Sorry, Brother." Druna spoke softly as she soften her expression. She didnt know if he heard her, for her voice was very low. She lowered her head in respect, the pain of his loss hitting to close to home. |
