Character ConceptNyela is a Midwife. Women and children are her passion. She will do everything in her power to care for the noble Symenestra women who desire to bear and birth their own children. Despite the dismal mortality rate of their deadly choice, Nyela's determined to give them the best pregnancy care she's able to provide.
Because she's intimately familiar with the horrors of childbearing for her people, she's not blind to the need for surrogates. They're necessary for the survival of her race. The surrogates, just like her own women, carry the Symenestra future in their wombs and Nyela will cross the line when it comes to their safety; ensuring they receive the same level of prenatal care as all Symenestra women do.
Nyela's religious views run as deep as her convictions. All blood is sacred. A crime against life, is a crime against Viratas. To honor that creed, she has dedicated her life to a career full of heartache.
Character HistoryNyela's biological mother died in childbirth. She's very close to her father and his second wife, who she considers her mother. Her father is a healer, who raised her to have strong faith. Her only sibling is a half-sister two years younger than herself.
When Nyela was sixteen, her mother tried to have another child through surrogacy. The pregnancy ended prematurely, killing both the surrogate and the unborn child. Her mother was too heart-broken to try for anymore children after that. It was the event that sparked Nyela's obsession with becoming a midwife.
