Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Rhy is slowly starting to learn what is acceptable for humanoid consumption. Cadara, the cook, would smile brightly when she brings the gleaming carcasses of rabbits, sturdy pigs, or fresh geese. But she can tell with her pinched expression that snakes, ravens and moles are not very appreciated. Those hauls usually end up in the Kennel dogs food bowls for supper. And Cadara, threatening with a wooden spoon, told her to bring back something nice today. The meat stock is pretty low, and she's not fond of asking Kavala to supplement with more expensive butcher meats.
So she is feeling quite proud of herself today, loping easily on her way back from a successful hunt. An onion bag hangs from her canine mouth, bumping along the ground with the weight of four ducks and a goose. Its todays hunting haul, and it throws an intoxicating scent into the air that sets her mouth to drooling. The neck of the bag is already starting to soak through with her anticipation. She found much luck at the low pond on the edge of her grounds for this late in the fall. These with be the last of the fowl before they all fly off to warmer pastures for the winter.
And winter will be here soon. She can smell it on the wind. The edge of the fringe forest is bright enough to look like fire, the leaves brittle and cackling like a crones laugh. The grasses have turned stiff with early morning frost, and everywhere you can see the animals preparing for the next season in nooks and crannies of the forest. But she rarely goes out that far for her hunting. Her territory is small, comprising of Sanctuary, skirting below the cliff face, a low pond and a wide arch back around. She could easily run the perimeter in less then half a bell. Her duties to Sanctuary leave her little time to defend anything bigger.
Sighing deep in her mind, she focuses on her corded neck bunching and heaving with a soothing rhythmic motion as she pulls the bag. Her log legs keeping a steady, lasting pace that she could keep up for bells. The thick fur of her back ripples in a bitter wind she can barley feel and her prey drive is sated to a rumbling contentment in the back of her head. And it feels good. Being surrounded by humans, no matter how much she loves them, make these stolen moments just that much more precious.
Suddenly her bag snags on a sharp, jutting rock, as she pulls the bag over a low wave in the grass. Consequently ripping a great hole straight down the front with the weight of her pulling. She stands there with the remains of a limp bag in her mouth and her eyes flashing with frustration. The fowl are splayed out in a mountain of iridescent feathers, no doubt signalling every hawk and eagle for miles of the unguarded prize.
Keeping her eyes warily on the sky she attempts to hold all five billed heads in her mouth at once. She can drag them back that way if she has to. |

Thick padded feet prodded the ground as Kahno crept through the forest. One paw in front of the other, he wound through the tall evergreens, his snout practically dragging the ground. He wasn’t sure if it was the section of the forest he was in, but all the tracks he’d found so far had led to a dead end. There was not a single rustle that betrayed the presence of a potential kill aside from small rodents. He was hungry. A rabbit or squirrel would simply not suffice.
A breeze ruffled the thick coat of brindled fur that suited his body. Golden eyes turned upward, dragging the rest of his head with them, expecting to sift and find a scent of a suitable meal. The tail end of the gust whipped around his body and he froze. The smell of blood infiltrated his nostrils. An abandoned kill was better than nothing at all, assuming there was actually something left on the carcass.
With a powerful kick of his long hind legs, he launched his bodyweight forward into a sprint. A black tongue lulled out from between white teeth. The scent grew stronger as he ran, black nails digging into the dirt, his massive paws snapping twigs and crushing leaves. The muscles in his limbs began to tingle and burn with the exercise, a feeling he loved, but he slowed his pace to an easy trot. Kahno’s head twisted about in search for the source of the coppery scent.
Turning his head back to the right, he froze, one paw barely an inch off the forest floor. Standing about fifty yards from him was an animal. A live one, not dead. The skin on the top of his muzzle crinkled as he watched the canine creature. Locked into its jaws was not one, but three, maybe four large birds. His mouth began to salivate as he turned his body in the direction of the intruder. The beast was in his territory, taking what he had sniffed out to scavenge off of. Normally he wouldn’t be so irate, but it had been a long day, and he was starving.
With purpose in his stride, Kahno made his way to the predator. In the back of his throat, a low bass of a growl erupted.

Someones here.
The invading thought makes her hackles prickle. She couldn't smell it, whoever it is is protected by the downward wind and the heavy scent of duck, but she could hear it. Heavy footfalls crush the fallen leaves with a delicacy you rarely find outside a stalking predator. She freezes in place with the first of the ducks still in her mouth, ears pivoting towards the thin forest.
Its the growl that makes her act. She drops her kill and swinging her heavy muzzle in the predators direction, her earlier mood eclipsed by this new threat. She thought she had chased out all of the competition in her small territory. Apparently she was wrong. Her chest vibrates as she spills a mirroring snarl from her open maw. How dare he push in on her ground.
He steps from the dark shadows of the early morning and she takes the opportunity to rake over his form with flashing eyes. A wolf, brindle and barrel chested. Larger then her, but not by much. A credit to his kind for sure, with yellow eyes that burn like a hawks. This in itself is not that unusual, except that not only is he a wolf working alone, he's Kelvic. Sanctuary might be in mind to heal Kelvics, but Rhy holds no such sentiment when dangerous creatures are this close to her home.
Shoulders thrown back and head low, she lets loose a volley of deep, savage barking. Acting the part of the dominant agressor to scare him away. Abandoning her kills she advances gradually, carefully, leaving them behind as a sign of confidence but standing loosely in front lest he decide to try and get around her. She stakes out a stance halfway to the intruder, pink foam from her blood tainted mouth building up from the barking and spraying the ground in front of them with each snap. |

Kahno, being at first on the offensive, raised his ears at the sound of the dog's snarling and carrying on. His head was held high, tail straight out as he took in the spectacle before him. Not a tickle of fear in the canine's eyes as she stood defensively before her bounty. It was admirable enough, and reminded him of himself. Certainly respectable, but she was in his neck of the woods. He had lived in the fringe for most of his life. It was where he hunted and slept, two activities that he hated to have interrupted or intruded upon.
The sound of her snapping jaws was a threatening one. Paws apart in a wide stance, he lowered his head and pinned his ears back. Bubbling up from his broad chest came a bass growl, nothing so showy as her snapping and spitting, but formidable nonetheless. Huge teeth shown behind black lips. He couldn't let a domestic dog show him up. Judging by the scent of the fresh blood, they were her kills, not something simply scavenged from the earth. He was hungry, but not hungry enough to dominate her and steal her prize. Kahno was more ill that she had found them in his territory, and he was still without a satisfying meal.
Widening his stance, he lifted his head high and proud, tail out straight behind him in an expression of dominance and possession. The deep rumble of a growl barreled up from the pit of his chest.

This was vexing. He didn't advance and challenge her, to her palpable relief, but he also doesn't back off and allow the wild, spitting dog her territory. He stands there, the very bas relief of a noble animal, with the terrifyingly seductive grumble of a growl. He has shifted his attention, from the way he holds himself, saying that he does not care much for her kills. The attention is instead focused on her. Aiming for the high, demanding pose of an alpha.
Quite arrogant, seeing as he has no pack to back him up, is the first thought to cross her mind. If he had had a pack mate she would have backed down and tried to retake it another day, or just shift her land altogether. But its just him. An even match is she's ever seen one.
But 50/50 is still a fools bet. A risk she would never have taken before, but she has something worth the protection now. If it gets him that much farther away from the gate and the grazing herds then its worth it.
The barking is lowered back to a snarling growl with his lack of reaction. She takes up her forward approach again on slow, carful feet. He won't come to her? Fine. She will go to him and force a response. Her muzzle is low and rippled with a mask of anger, and she looks directly into his eyes. Telling him with every line of her body to either leave or take her up on the offer.
Dogs, if they can help it, don't fight to the death with each other. But acting like it is all part of this dance. Another foot forward, a lunge, obviously fake. She keeps the high walls to the west at her back instead of the birds, just to communicate what she's really protecting. |

Had he been in his two-pawed form, Kahno would have chuckled and rolled his eyes. This dog was challenging him! Almost at the same time she had advanced, he, too, closed a fraction of the distance between them. With an energetic bounce, he leapt forward, two massive front paws gripping the ground. The move was a front, however, intended to threaten her without actually causing her any physical harm. Her stance had changed, no longer protecting her bountiful kills, but what appeared to be the city.
How curious. Why was she concerned with the city? What did a wall filled with people have to offer her that the wilderness could not? Kahno found in her eyes that this was no joke, no aversion; she was sincere about defending the city.
Ever so slightly, his head cocked to the side, a signal of slight yet dismissed confusion. The skin of his nose loosened, the wrinkles fading slightly.
Whatever it was that possessed her to want to protect the city was something serious for her to challenge him so. The soft spot in his heart made him regret his behavior. He didn't know what it was like to have something to protect, or to even be protected. Jealousy pinged in his chest.
No, don't. He couldn't let her find a weakness in him. He snarled at her, a threatening, offensive gesture that he intended for her to understand as a stern "get lost," but he was sure she had seen him falter for an instant.
Brushing the thought aside and clearing his mind, he made his move. With a hefty kick of his hind legs, he rushed her. His head leaned to the side as his jaws opened wide, aiming for the thick mane of fur that covered her throat. His every intention was to hurt her, of course, for she had drawn thoughts of his past to the foremost part of his mind, something he didn't take too lightly. He resented that she had been able to do it so easily. How could he have let her crack into his mental wall?
He would make her pay. It wasn't the city he was after, but his assertion of dominance over the territory. A good wrestle was good every now and then. It kept his senses sharp.

She saw it, just for a second. His guard was down and something hard passed over his face. But it was gone just as fast as it appeared. What was that. Jealousy, regret? Was he angry that there was something she wants to keep safe?
He fakes a lunge, just as she did, and moving at the same measured pace. So he is taking her up on the offer. The hatful mask is back up, full of dominating, powerful features. He's posturing, showing frustration more than anger. Knowing she saw the weakness in his eyes.
He makes for an odd Kelvic. And an even odder wolf. The questions boil over in her mind, distracting her, just as he makes his real lunge.
Has she had fights with other dogs? Sure. The Sanctuary has dozens of them, and they grate now and then. A few moments of teeth, claws and flying fur and its over. But this is a totally different motion. She had relaxed her shoulders for the briefest of moments as she was standing still, for its hard to keep them bunched for so long. And it was that moment that he grabs at the tough fur just below the flat plane of her jaw.
She yowls in surprise and throws her head in an attempt to rip him off. When that fails she bucks her front legs, catching a cat-like shoulder blade into the soft spot between his shoulder joint and chest.
Snarling and withering she aims her long, cruel teeth to the base of his throat. The only place she can reach. Keeping hold and trying to pull him down with his own weight.
Like hell she's going to roll over and let him take over her land, this close to Sanctuary! |

The pain pierced the skin at Kahno's shoulder and again at his throat. A rough snarl rippled through his throat, her bite pulling the fur and skin, making him nearly choke. His front paws stumbled as she yanked him downward. The two fell in a fury of thrashing, and Kahno snapped his teeth in her eyes in an attempt to grasp with them at her ear. Spittle flew as he unsuccessfully snapped again. Frustrated, and in a desperate attempt to get the little knives off of him, he drew his hind legs up into her chest and kicked with all his might. Hind nails tore at her belly as her teeth came ripping through his skin. The heat of pain burned, but he wasn't finished with her yet.
Kahno rolled onto his feet. Without giving her a chance to size him up, he charged her again, feinting to the left before flailing to the right with a headbutt sort of motion. He growled as a pang shot up his shoulder, the skin ripping at the little puncture wounds.
If it was a fight she'd wanted, she was sure gonna get it.

The ground is yanked under her and she falls with the wolf, barely registering where she ends and he begins. But she hangs on as hard as she can to that mouthful of flesh and fur. Even when the wolf starts snapping at her ear, sending wet sprays of spittle across her muzzle.
She's so focused on his mouth that she doesn't realize what his feet are doing. She has a moments warning as his sides seizes with the swing of his hind legs, but she barely has time to act before sharp black claws rake at her underbelly. She reflexively bites down harder around his throat and pulls away from the painful slash. He rolls up and pulls away, leaving her with a mouthful of fur and the taste of blood on the tip of her teeth.
She wheels to face him again, shoulders back and head low to the ground, as soon as she looses grip. Recognizing the flat-headed motion of his charge she braces her side and throws up her shoulder. But she misses the first feint and falls for the second, ending with a choking hit to the ribs.
her constant growl dies to a pitiable wheeze and she lacks the breath to start it up again. But her eyes are still bright with drive. She doesn't pull back but pushes into him with her side, getting enough room between the two of them for her to make another grab at his flesh.
With a mute snapping sound she bites down hard on the stretch of skin between his stifle and his body. And with a vicious shake of her head she tows him back towards the forest in that awkward way. Leaving the closest leg to dangle uselessly with his tendons in her mouth. |

An angry yelp burst from Kahno’s chest as he jerked and tossed the full weight of his body around in an attempt to free himself from the dog’s bite. In a flurry of quick motions he turned his head and snapped his teeth at her repeatedly. It was more of a motion to startle her into releasing him, but the dog was driven. She had some talent in her fighting skill, that was for certain, but as her teeth cut deeper and deeper into his leg, he became more ill. He jerked his leg again, but her jaws were like a vice. She had him in an awkward position that made it difficult for him to turn and gain the upper hand. It was time to play dirty.
In the seconds that it took for him to assess the situation, he came up with a plan. Cursing himself for resorting to such a pitiful out, he shifted his form. A shock of swirling light left behind a furless, two-legged man with brindled hair and gold eyes. Kahno twisted his body and swung his forearm against the side of her head, clipping her in the eye. He knew if she got another chance to bite down on him, she would do some damage. Blood caked his limbs and chest from the attack, wounds throbbing already. With his right arm, he hooked around her neck and squeezed in an attempt to cut her breathing off. He angled his hold up, her chin locked in the crook of his elbow, and with his other hand grabbed a fist-full of her fur to hold her in place.
