Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Elem listened to Vanator's description of the Opal clan, giving him insight about Kavala. "Oh, I was unaware of an Opal clan. Could you explain them all to me? I know the Diamond Clan is comprised of warriors from the one I met in Zeltiva and now the Opal Clan. What other ones are there? And why are they named after gemstones? Sorry for all the questions, but I suspect I will be treating more Drykas in the coming years, so I might as well understand them." Until then, he continued with his lesson.

"We were very fortunate to have those emergency scrolls that night. Without them, I suspect none of us would be here talking about anything right now. I intend to study them and learn how to make more. nevertheless, in the case you mention, it is the same as a splint, except the bone has to be pushed back in first. Probably best, if there is no Rak'kelian around, to knock the patient out and apply alcohol, or the exposed bone could infect the inside when it goes back in. I say knock them out because applying the alcohol first will cause the same effect, only with shock." he watched as the Drykas fingered the leather and it brought up this next, important lesson.

"Shock is when the body takes too much trauma than it is capable to handle at one. A person goes unconscious and the body tries to deal with the problem, stealing blood and temperature from other places. You must keep a trauma victim covered with blankets to insure they do not go into shock as it can be fatal. They may become combative and act strange, but this is because their brain is trying to do too many things at once." Elem smiled and moved the mortar and pestle over. "Do you know what these are?"

[Sanctuary] Diagnoses (Vanator)

Vanator's eyes lit up when Elem asked about the Drykas clans, anxious to share something about his people. Talking about them made the fact that they had been devastated seem less severe. The Denusk's voice took on a tone of a kind teacher as he spoke.

"There are seven clans. They are all named after gemstones found in the grasslands. Each has a specialty. Like Opal are excellent healers. That is not to say that the other clans don't have healers, like Kavala and her mother were ours. Kavala and I are from the Sapphire clan, our Webbers are considered most skilled among the Drykas, and talented reimancers, which is probably why Kavala has taken to it so strongly. As you said, the Diamonds are warriors. Kashik, the wife I mentioned to you, was a Diamond. The Ruby clan boasts fine craftsmen and women, Emeralds excel at hunting. Amethyst clansmen breed the finest horses, and the Topaz make sure the ways of our people are upheld and observed and laws are obeyed."
Vanator then nodded, his lesson finished.

When Elem talked about the healing scrolls, Vanator's face darkened a bit at the memory of the night of the Zith attack. The quick healing they were afforded, along with the work of the reimancers and the bravery of the staff, had saved them from slaughter and the Sanctuary from being ransacked. The moment of musing passed, though, when Elem brought up the next topic in his lesson.

Shock was something Vanator was not familiar with, though the symptoms Elem described were familiar. He noted carefully the treatment for trauma, since the immediate affects of shock may not be visible. When the Zeltivan drew the mortar and pestle closer, Van nodded slightly. "Yes, isn't that used to smash things up?"

Seven clans. It made much more sense, all except for something that genuinely made Elem want to say, 'Huh?' Perhaps an eyebrow went up in confusion, though he had enough respect to let Vanator finish as well as absorb his lesson before speaking. "Webbers? What do you mean?" he knew of the web of a spider and the webbing between the digits of a Char'oda or an animal. That was his extent of knowledge of the word. As he listened he tapped the mortar and pestle in a friendly manner.

"Yes, indeed, the mortar and pestle are vital tools in medicine, herbalism, even cooking, in my opinion. But since we are talking medicine, I'll keep it simple. As you know, there are many herbs and other plant life which contain medicinal value, no doubt used by your healers. The mortar and pestle is used to grind the herbs up into a graded material, being of the same consistency throughout. Some roots versus leaves or stems need to be properly mixed before administering them via a poultice or tincture." He moved the tools away, knowing he was getting ahead of himself.

"We can save those things for next time, however. They belong to slightly more advanced schools that are really not for the immediate treatment. So, is there anything else you would like to know?" Elem certainly didn't think that Vanator could not grasp the other concepts, but overloading on a topic could really degrade the material, hence why he spent an entire season on a topic in Zeltiva at the University.

Elem was a part of Sanctuary, and though not family, he could be considered a sort of extended family. Van saw no harm in giving him a little taste. Webbing was something the Drykas kept close to themselves. Not that the rest of the world didn't know about it, but it was paramount to treason for a Drykas to teach anyone the art of creating djed webs, and compromising their means of security and communication. "Have you not heard of the Web? We Drykas have, or had... it is being rebuilt after the storm, a sort of djed network that covers Cyphrus, through it we can do...many things. Sanctuary has a web around it that Sama'el Sunsinger weaved. Kav and I will be adding to it as the construction continues."

Turning quickly from the subject, the Drykas received the last morsels of Elem's lesson. "Ah, yes, herbs. I would like to learn about them as well sometime. But I may save that for Serrif or Iris, so I can spend some time with them as well." He grinned at Elem. Vanator took a moment to look over the items on the table, and the things they had discussed, to make sure he had no further questions.

"That seems like a good bit for my first lesson. At least I am better prepared for emergencies, which is my first concern. Anyway, if I have any questions, this place has no shortage of healers! Thanks Elem, I am glad we were able to teach each other a thing or two."

Van looked out the window at the compound and its state of construction. "I should get outside, I need to watch how these buildings are going up. I am used to setting up big tents, if I am to help build, I need to learn how its done!" The Drykas offered Elem a handshake and a pat on the shoulder, then picked up his practice stitching and leather strips. "To show Kavala." With a final smile, Van slipped out of the clinic and into the courtyard.

Additional Notes: :
This was an enjoyable teaching thread with a nice sprinkling of humor and basic medicinal knowledge thrown together. Both Vanator and Elem's enthusiasm to teach and learn was evident throughout, and I really liked how their roles switched as Vanator explained the basics of the Drykas Clans and Webbing. The way Elem seemed almost excited by the thought of a Glassbeak made me chuckle, and the thought of how different both of your PC's are and how they connected in this thread really made it for me. I Threw the Philosophy point to Vanator because of his little thought about the nature of death. I hope all the other points are self explanatory. Keep up the good work!
