This northernmost city is the home of Morwen, The Goddess of Winter, and her followers who dwell year round in a land of frozen wonder. [Lore]

Winter 12, 512
Just another windy day in Avanthal as Miria trudged along the docks outside Clearwater hold. The slight din from the sea breeze would follow her as she ventured to the heart of Avanthal. Quickening her pace, a look of agitation could be seen on her face as Miria reminded herself why she was taking a whole day to ease her doubts. This wasn't just another day of mindless routine, today would be the day where she would visit that damn'd Laforet. The last time the two met, the man was speaking in hushed and hurried tones that kept her suspicious something was wrong This was ridiculous! I will take all this time to go to his house just to see his ugly mug jeering at me. Making me look even more the fool for believing his ridiculous joke. "You take this jest too far!" Miria muttered angrily as she journeyed to Laforte's house.
Avanthal isn't the biggest city but traveling through it nevertheless takes almost a full bell and wasting time on simple pleasantries wasn't normal for the Vantha. This applied doubly so with people the bow-toting Vantha wasn't particularly familiar with. Greetings fell on deaf ears as Miria passed waded through the park, only offering a slight wave to even friends.“Perhaps later. I actually have someone I have to meet today.” Miria finally replied to a persistent friend, quickly crossing the city lake in an attempt to avoid his advances. “Miria careful! The ice isn't-” Escaping atop a small mountain of snow Miria spotted the Frozen Falls marketplace, accompanied by it's characteristic braying from the animals and shouts by the merchants in the area. For once in her life Miria was happy to see the crowded mass as it meant that she was close to Skyglow Hold, which meant she was nearing the edge of town.
As Miria neared Skyglow Hold the sea breeze that followed her through town dissipated as a soft snow started to envelop all around Avanthal. As she looked up Miria grinned knowingly as she saw Skyglow hold in all of it's splendor. Skyglow Hold's position in the city still made the hold look amazing as you looked on past and saw the shining lights straight from above. The long trek across town finally took it's toll as Miria finally rested on the planks of a nearby fence. Above the Talderan lights became glaringly vivid as the sun started to set into the west. |

The day was still in its early light when Ettan arrived in Avanthal. He had traveled there on a whim, being bored of the usual scenery. It wasn't his first time in the city,he had lead other to Avanthal from Kelea before and for quite the price. He figured he could find a group of merchant wanting to travel with their goods into the mountains.
The wolf held his sack in his teeth as he wondered the streets. His wolf form was much more suited in the cold weather but harder to travel through the city in, so he planned to find a place he shapeshift and cloth him self. Not that the nudity bothered him, but even in his lack of understanding of civilized society, he knew they preferred clothing and it be easier to find a place to stay for the night and than perhaps later some employers.
He had heard news a friend had traveled there as well, well less of a friend. Ettan didn't really have friends. Another Kelvic in his line of work, he ran into last spring in quite unusual circumstances. Among the two of them they have traveled all of Mizahar, give or take a few cities. He thought he might sniff her out later and see how her journeys were going. She was traveling under different circumstance than himself. Ettan traveled because he saw walled in cities has just another cage, and a cage you chose is still a cage, however she traveled because she had to, though he never heard the whole story, nor could he really say he was interested, peoples pasts, nor his own really interested him in any manner, but than again not much did.
He was wondering the out skirts of the city when he saw a fairly abandoned house in Skyglow. He didn't think much of occupying it for a short while. It would save him some mizas and he only planned to stay for a few nights, other than the lingering smell he didn't make much of a mess or take up much room. It would be like he was never there.

Sliver was never on gate duty. Despite her reliability as a guard, there was something far more imposing about two Vantha with their massive bears than a small wolverine glowering at any who entered the city, that being said, she had done her time on the walls, and often stopped to chat with the guards to hear about any newcomers or interesting things they had seen today.
Their information was banal at best, a couple Kelvic wolves, one in human the other in wolf form, a few traders, but mostly just hunting parties enjoying the new found release from the confines of the city. The Kelvic often sought the information as something to keep her going on guard duty, but apparently today there were no real tales to tell.
That was when she caught a familiar scent. The scent of wolf was all too familiar to her. She had her fair share of scrapes with them over the years, and one didn't forget that musky odor after getting into a bit too many nasty fights with them. This scent, however, faint from the morning rang of something she recalled from years past. Just as she was about to leave she turned and inquired as to what the Kelvic wolves had looked like. They said the earlier of the two was a woman with black hair and golden eyes, dressed warmly and looking for work. Sliver shook her head and inquired as to the other. This one they said had copper eyes, was in wolf form and was russet with black streaks of fur. One Vantha piped up and said he made her recall autumn leaves falling unto a black earth. Her companions looked at her incredulously, but she stood by her poetic phrase. Sliver thanked her comrades and left. She knew that wolf alright: Ettan.
Now the scent was already faint, and following it through the busy streets of Avanthal, with a myriad of other smells covering it would be nigh impossible, Sliver was a decent tracker, but certainly not that good. Instead she tried to think of her old wolf acquaintance. She tried to recall how a wolf Kelvic might feel entering a walled city. It had become her home, but for her brethren without ties it was more like a large encapsulating dome to keep someone in. Perhaps then she wouldn't be finding him at any taverns or in the markets. No if she skirted the city, perhaps she would pick up his scent again somewhere a bit more isolated.
The scent was much fresher when she caught it again, drifting up through the olfactories like a distant reminder of days gone by. It led towards Skyglow Hold, which made the wolverine curious. Was this just chance, or did the Kelvic have a purpose for coming to this area. She marched slowly forward, having learned how to pace herself with the distances she crossed, a small out of the way home coming into sight as she followed the wolf's trail. |

Ettan settled himself up in the den of the house. He didn't bother with the beds but settled himself on the floor with a blanket. He shifted into his human form and stretched out his joints. He always felt a bit stiff after shifting. He slipped on his pants and went through the remainder of his supplies from his journey. As suspected he was low on food. He'd have to go into market later. Something he wasn't quite happy about having to do.
He shivered. The lack of life in the house had left it just as cold as outside. He went to put on the rest of his cloths when he picked up the scent he was expecting to find. He laughed slightly, knowing Sliver must have already inquired about him going into town. "That noisy little devil." He shocked his head as he mumbled to himself. It than occurred to him that she probably would give him an hear full for him squatting in the house. She seemed to have more a of a sense of common curtsy than he did. As far as he saw the place was empty and opened for use.

Rested, Miria continued on making good time after finally getting out of the main part of the city. The snow started to fall faster now, urging her to get to Laforet's residence. Finally his arvinta came into sight as the worst of the snow drizzle came down. A relieved smile started to form as she pushed the door slightly but it disappeared as quickly as it came. Someone left the door open and tracked all types of filth from the outside into the house. She wasn't an expert on tracking but it didn't look to long ago.
She braved a peek into further inside before she decide on what to do next. Her friend really went to great lengths for this act. She cursed silently as she gripped her blades. It's was more out of finding comfort then anger as she shyed away from the door. Still this wasn't enough for her to lose all hope of finding him. Maybe there might be something there still, perhaps he left a possible clue to where he was hiding. Miria looked around for any type of help but to her dismay there didn't look to be anyone nearby. No neighbors or roaming polar bears as far as she could tell.
Miria pushed herself past the door knocking on it's wood twice before entering. She quietly waited for an answer before closing it behind her. Miria would glance around before deciding where to search. Miria's first move would be to check Laforte's table or desk. |

Ettan remembering of is old friend was interrupted as he heard someone outside. He jumped back to his feet and quickly gathered his things and finding a place to hide. He was flat on the floor under a bed by the time Miria had entered the house. He watched her from his hiding place as she slowly searched it.
He contemplated on what to do, knowing he probably would only be able to stay hidden for so long. Her scent wasn't the one he found around the house so it didn't seem she was the resident of the house so he was curious. He noticed the blade in her hand and knew things could get bad, assuming she was in some way was skilled in using it.
Perhaps he could sneak out without being seen Ettan though or rush past her. He started stripping but than stopped realizing how inclosed the area he was hiding in.

Slow and easy breaths caused steam to pile into the sky before the Kelvic as she made her way to the front of the house, glimpsing the woman who had also approached it. From the looks of the building, snow collected in large piles around it, un-shoveled and very few prints around save the wolf prints she had followed and this woman, the home had a bit of an abandoned look to it, though recently perhaps, as if not long ago the chimney would have been utilized.
Sliver cleared her throat so as not to scare the woman. From behind at least she wore the traditional clothes of a Vantha. A few swift steps took her up to the doorway, noticing the dirt that had been tracked in. She was unsure of what brought the Vantha here, and how it tied to Ettan and this abandoned home, but she was quite determined to get to the bottom of it right away.
"Hello, Sliver of the Icewatch. I think my acquaintance is in there...are you perhaps looking for someone?"
The Kelvic wrapped her arms behind her back, straightening out to a short height on par with most other stocky Vantha, brown eyes gazing curiously at Miria. |

It looked like the search would have to wait. Miria turned to address whoever was behind trying to look as plain as possible. Giving a smile that didn't reach her eyes she tried quickly tried to piece together what this Sliver just said. "Ah hello didn't see you there Iceguard. I'm ...Diana and.... this place was an old friend of hers" Great! If this Sliver was as she says Miria just lied and created a missing persons case with the Icewatch. Wait...acquaintance? There were more kelvics in this house? How in Morwen's name did this happen? "I wasn't aware that indigenous polar bears resided in abandoned homes." Miria commented as what looked to be a slight twinge of annoyance. What audacity these conspirators of his had. To what lengths would they go."Nevermind that, I am here to get an idea where this friend of mine disappeared too." Rushing over to his bed where his journal resided. However there was the possibility of having a hibernating and moody kelvic residing in the home. How infuriating.... "Come, let's be about it!" Miria started as she set forward. It took only a few steps for her to find Sliver's acquaintance until Miria went through the motions of a hello. Looking around the place looked to be a complete disaster. A chair was knocked down from the table, his shelf was broken it's contents were scatter all across the floor. "Ah that's nice you were here after all. Great. Well that's it! The secret is out!" she joked lightly before she picked up Laforte's journal. Looking through the pages there were small excepts from his last entry. I really thing I'm on to something. Last night I saw that another outside of my house until another larger group joined him... ...turns out following them was a bad idea. They have a even more then I thought near Avanthal. Just out of sight looking over the wall but they are surely up to something. No idea what exactly though... This is bad. I think someone recognized me as I was trailing them I better go to the Icew....

Ettan was making is plan of escape as sliver kept the girl occupied. Of course the conversation ended before he could crawl out of his hiding place and towards the window. Ettan in response of being fully acknowledged crawled out from under the bed, probably appearing much taller now standing up than he did under the bed.
He gave the girl no response or apology, which would have been suited but instead threw his sack over his shoulder and headed for the door. He gave Sliver a slight nod as he passed her. "I'll be on my way." This of course showed Ettan's usual sense of curtsy of none at all.
Upon opening the door, he could see the weather had turned into a heavy snow, he decided against leaving, not want to trench through the snow in either form of his. He found himself a seat and sat down in it. Feeling the eyes of the room on him he looked at them bother and groaned. "Fine. . .I'm sorry." He said but no true meaning behind it.

The wolverine cocked her head at the girl who called herself Diana, strange it didn't seem a very Vantha name, but perhaps her parents had wanted to be a bit different. She shrugged and entered with the woman, inquiring as she entered.
"How long has your friend been missing? Perhaps the Icewatch could be of service here."
That was about the time she saw Ettan crawl from under the bed, a sizable task for a creature as tall as he was in human form. She tried to catch his arm as he went to leave, missing when he headed for the doorway. The lanky muscular man was just as she remembered, though perhaps his scruff was a bit more unkempt than before. She opened her mouth to protest when he turned around, apologized in that moody way he had and plopped down in a chair. The guard rubbed her head, quite unsure of exactly how to proceed. It was clear the wolf's intent had been to squat at the house, but it was just as clear he had barely been here for a few chimes before the two of them interrupted him. Fist things first, however.
"I'm sorry Diana, I didn't explain fully. I, nor my friend here are bears, and he is not of the guard. If I had to guess, Ettan here was just passing through looking for some work, am I right?"
She gave the Kelvic a look that spoke of intentions to talk to him in private later, but she kept any verbal tirade at bay so she could address the much more pressing matter at hand. The room had been damaged and rifled through, yet the journal Diana had been holding had been left. Had this friend of hers been bodily taken from his home? Been in trouble with the watch? It was the only reason she could think of for not knowing of a missing person, and the instincts of the hunter seeking specific quarry, mingled with her duties as a guard and aid of the people.
"Diana, this seems like a serious matter. Do you know of anyone that would wish harm upon your friend? My acquaintance did not make this mess, which means this house was clearly broken into." |
