Jez followed Sama’el toward the herd of horses nearby, Wind following a pace behind him. The other’s pavilion owned more than the Firetongue, yet they were all grazing near the tents they belonged to without wandering off. He could tell Sama’el was much more experienced with horses than he was, and was grateful the man would give up some time to help train him. The young man looked towards Dohaina, admiring the Strider mare. Wind also directed his gaze to the mare and gave a snort as he stamped his hoof, his usual show off whenever they met another horse.

“She’s lovely,” he voiced his opinion as the man whistled. Green eyes turned to watch as two Seme trotted up to them, impressed that the pair had answered the call without any fuss. The same could not be said for the majority of horses owned by their pavilion. Though well bred and good to ride, the Firetongue hadn’t focused too much effort on training their horses; a fact Jez was hoping to change. He had started with his own Strider and planned to move on to the others in time. His leaving home for two seasons had given him a fresh view of his family and of the changes that would benefit them. His father, the Ankal, worked hard to keep everyone in line but was often careless about finer details.

“They certainly appear well trained,” Jez nodded, “If you tell me what I need to do, I’m willing to help. I’m afraid I can’t offer many solutions for now though; as I said, I haven’t had much experience other than in riding.” He looked forward to helping work them, and to learning skills he could take back to his own family and improve their herd.

Horsemanship in Endrykas (Sama'el)

Postby Sama'el Sunsinger on January 4th, 2013, 11:14 am

ImageThe golden mare snorted and tossed her mane, purposefully ignoring the new stallion. One had to prove one didn't care in order to prove oneself strong enough to lead, perhaps. She was certainly in charge of the Sunsinger horses, though. They deferred to her.

"She is, thanks," he said, grinning. "But, well, I'm biased. I think she likes Wind. Don't be fooled by her cool attitude."

When the Seme came up, he patted their necks. Another year, he thought, and they might be bred. Not with each other, of course, but perhaps he could trade stud services from the stallion for the stud services of another stallion for the mare. Plans and plans.

Image"They are," he agreed, "which is a bit of a problem if you're wanting to help me train horses. Now, I've been on the lookout for a Windrunner mare worthy of Horse there," he said, pointing to the Windrunner stallion that had carried him to Endrykas years ago. "If you happen to know of any, you let me know, or perhaps you can come with me to look for one. I'll breed them in the Spring, and probably one of the Striders. Then you can help me train the mare, and help with the breeding next season. And whenever we do get our proper pavilion, that will require some extra training for the Seme.

"So I suppose we ought to pick a day to go horse shopping, unless you want to start with proper care and feeding of a horse. I'm sure you know enough to keep your boy there healthy for the most part, but there are injuries that might be beyond you."

Jez chuckled at the mare, responding to Sama’el at the same time, “Don’t worry, Wind’s just a big show off really. I think it’ll do him some good to be ignored for a change.” The young man looked over to the Windrunner stallion, amused at the name Horse and wondering how it came about. Unfortunately he didn’t know of any Windrunner mares that could be bred with him. “I’m afraid I don’t know any,” he shook his head, “but I’d be happy to come and help you look for one.” It’d be a good learning experience for him as well as helpful to the other man’s herd.

“It sounds like a good plan,” he nodded with a grin, “It’ll be easier working in the Spring too.” The work he had to do around the pavilion was hard enough, let alone when it was cold outside. Jez listened to Sama’el making plans before replying. “I don’t mind when we go to be honest; it depends on what day would be best for you.” He knew the other was probably busier than he was, being an Ankal, and that his own schedule was never really set in stone anyway. “I know enough to take care of Wind, but it’s always good to listen to others. Everyone has their own take on horse care, after all. If you have any advice on care, or tips on severe injuries, I’d love to listen.”

Horsemanship in Endrykas (Sama'el)

"Well, why don't you meet me here in a week, fairly early, and we'll go look? I can walk the Web a bit to find out who has mares for sale in pavilions that aren't overrun with the pox." He smiled tightly. "Keep us and our pavilions as safe as possible and still get some business taken care of."

He figured it would be good to have an Amethyst man along for the ride, and they would have to do some simple checks for health, obviously. That would give him a chance to see how Jez worked with horses, anyway.

"If you come early enough, you'll find me checking up all these horses. You can even help me with the worst of them, Ugly Pony. I didn't name that one," he added quickly. His servant was responsible for that one. "He's a right bastard, that one." Sama'el grinned. "Might help to have a second pair of hands to make sure he's healthy. Ingrate."
