Alea was completely caught off-guard when he lifted her. By the time she recovered enough to prepare a violent escape, he had already set her down. She turned wildly, prepared to defend herself against another assault, but he merely walked back to the strange heavy disks. Her eyes followed him, bewildered, but when he started talking she managed to listen...mostly.
The way he was lecturing... it reminded her of her old instructors, when she was a child. They always went on about how something was supposed to be good for her, but she could never see how, and besides it all always sounded like way too much work for a too-distant payoff. She'd often snuck off when they got going; tiptoeing behind a wall or something and then darting for the hills.
Her feet were already edging toward the door without needing explicit orders. The question was whether she could dart out of sight before he turned around. He was saying something about fruit when she felt the door-curtain behind her. She was going to make it! Brushing the curtain aside, she backed out quickly... only to run right into something hard, cold, and wet.
She wanted to kick herself. She'd forgotten about the snowman. It looked like the prank was on her this time. And now it was too late; the blue man was already turning around. She hurriedly stood up straighter, trying to pretend she hadn't just been trying to slink off. History had told her that if he knew how bored she was, he would only make her work harder.
Her failed escape attempt made her want to retaliate in some other way. She could never have stood up to her old instructors...but they were all gone now. They were gone, never again to berate her laziness, never again to teach her the ways of Denval, the ways of her ancestors, which she had never cared about before it all disappeared. And so, because she couldn't figure out exactly what to feel, she defaulted to anger. "'Meat on my bones?'" she mocked nastily. "It sounds like you want to make me tastier for wild animals. This is all just a conspiracy to get me eaten, isn't it. Admit it!" She pointed an accusing finger at him, trying not to think about how ridiculous she sounded. If the Isur was smart, he'd at least pretend to take her seriously.
