Silarial's outstretched hands fell slowly to her side at the Kelvic's mention of her parents. Yes, Areeyah, her mom, would be worried if she stayed out too late without letting her know about it beforehand. She would even throw a fit if she stayed out a chime past her curfew. But with her real parents? She highly doubted it. They abandoned her in the first place, why should they care now?

With a small jolt, she came back to herself when Kali ushered her to get on the sled. She looked at the woman distractedly and pressed her lips together into a quick smile. Moving her focus once again on the task at hand, she placed her feet on the Runners and tested whether her shoes would easily slide off its surface. Nope, she won’t fall that easily. Satisfied, she held onto the handlebars in front of her and nodded.
“Noted. Ready whenever you are!”

Her companion then hopped inside the sled and, to Silarial’s mild surprise, started shedding her clothes haphazardly until she was stark naked in front of the young Vantha. It was not a new sight to the Silarial, having grown up in a city that heavily relies on its Kelvic populace. It just quite didn’t register in her mind that Kali’s a Kelvic, and Kelvics strip down to shift properly.

She watched with fascination as her companion attached the straps to her body with such proficiency it was obvious she had been doing this for a long time. But with whom, Silarial wondered. There must have been someone who taught her all of these stuff before. A master, maybe. Thinking back about it, the notion was highly possible. Kali is a Kelvic and she would be driven by the need to serve someone. But here she was, so far away from society and obviously living alone. And Silarial thought, why?

At that instant, the possibility that Kali had lost such an important person crossed her mind. It was highly likely, and it would explain that deep sadness that she had seen in her mesmerizing eyes.

One moment, Kali was standing in front of her, and with a leap, the woman was gone and in her place a large, grayish-blackish sled dog. She watched as Kali shook her body exuberantly, already feeling her energy level rising through the roof. They’re seriously going for a ride! Silarial gave the Kelvic a two thumbs-up and a sunshiny smile when she looked her way. She took a mental note to check for her companion’s clothes every once in a while as well during their drive. And when Kali finally gave her an expectant look, Silarial held on to the handlebars as if her life depended on it, and at last said ‘go’.

She felt the sled come to an abrupt start as Kali pulled hard, the sudden movement pulling her back till her arms were extended before her. Silarial braced her legs as they accelerated through the ice, never letting go of the wooden bars she oh so tightly held. It didn’t take too long until they were easily gliding through the snow, and the maintained speed made it easier for her to balance herself on the runners.

It was such a brand new, thrilling feeling to the young dancer. She had never felt the cold wind rush through her face so fast before! And they were moving so fast, faster than she could ever run on her own two feet. Her skirt was flapping hard against her legs and repeatedly rising up to her thighs as the wind hit against them, but she did not bother holding them down. She let out a gleeful laugh, throwing her head towards the sky as she reveled in the joy and excitement of a first-time musher.
“Kali, this is so much fuuuuun!!!” she squealed delightedly as they darted across the white expanse of the northern wastes.

A bell or so later, they had reached clusters of trees that made up a small, wintry forest. She gently pressed her foot on the brake, careful not to hurt her sled-pulling companion. Kali slowed to a stop, and so did the sled. Silarial finally let go of the wooden bar and jumped off onto the snow-covered ground, flexing her shoulders and letting out a sigh of contentment. She walked over to the large Zephyrian sled dog, still can’t quite believe that she was Kali, with two hands and two feet -and fingers- a bell earlier.

Just as Kali had instructed her to do, she unclipped the silver fastenings that hooked her to the sled. As soon as she unfastened the last of the tuglines, she dove into Kali’s thick coat and gave the Kelvic hound a tight hug, breaking into soft giggles.
“Ahhh, so warm. With fur like this, I won’t need a blanket at night anymore.”

After a few heartbeats, Silarial finally let go and rose, not after giving the Kelvic a quick scratch at the back of her ear. Silarial straightened her back and stretched her arms above her head to rouse the blood within her body. With a satisfied smile, she turned back to her companion and asked,
“So, hunting. Where do we head next?”

You're Not Alone [Kali]

Postby Kalimalka on February 25th, 2013, 9:43 pm

When Kali slows to a stop in the small clearing she is thrilled with Silarial's performance in the drivers seat. Not only is she the kind to refrain from heel-rocking and dead pulling that plagues impatient or twitchy people, she has the presence of mind and solid guesswork that lets her push on the brake without choking her companion or ramming the wooden vehicle up her companions hindquarters. Couple that with her rather insubstantial weight and she earns herself a big gold star in the Kelvic's 'optimal musher' list. And she should be proud of herself, because that list isn't very long.

The Zepherian's tongue is lolling and hot gusts of breath dissipate into the chilly air as she waits patiently for Silarial to unhook her. But when the Vantha does unhook her, she surprises her by throwing her arms around the dogs neck and burying her face in the thick fur between her neck and shoulder. Kali immediately stiffens, unused to the contact, but softens under the muffled giggling and the pronouncement that she is "warm". A different, deeper voice bubbles out of her memory:

"You're so warm, old girl."

The dog turns to nuzzle her companion with an earful of ticklish whiskers, thankful for the gesture, however unexpected. And leans her large head into the hand that dishes out the playful ear scratch when the girl gets up. And while she would love to continue the cuddles, thats not what they are there for, she tells herself. If she doesn't catch anything today then she will have to either supplement with expensive butcher meat or gnaw on the leftover rations. Both of which are unappetizing for various reasons. So when the young Vantha exclaims "where next" she nods once in understanding, and casts around the forrest floor with bright blue eyes.

Ideally she wants something small. But she could probably polish off the bones of a horse in a single sitting. Which makes her long for a heathy young buck, even the massive weight of a moose wouldn't be unwelcome. The constant dumping of snow Avanthal gets means that tracks are pretty useless unless they are extremely fresh, but this clearing is so overused that there is a strange bowl-like dip in the snow from hooves and paws packing down the snow.

The Kelvic hound motions for Silarial to follow with a jerk of her head. Communication is going to be sadly limited (especially since she isn't Frostfawn) so she hopes the Vantha has some ingenuity on her side. Kali lowers her head to the fresh coat of snow and tries to sniff out the tracks underneath. She walks long circles through the clearing picking out separate scents under the clean smell of snow, effectively kicking up the snowy landscape. Until one musky track catches her attention.

Excited, she calls for Silarial with a diluted "moof", just in case something is nearby. Then with one large paw held awkwardly like a hand, she scraps off the layer of fresh snow on top to the icy packed snow beneath. And perfectly preserved in the denser snow is a paw roughly the size of a human hand. Its cat-like in nature with tiny dents where the nails would be. And the size of the paw clashes with how deep the print is, making you think that this creature is much smaller then the track implies. Its a Lynx track, and its not very old. Kali points her muzzle in the direction the track leads. This is what they will be hunting.
"I'm speaking Vani."
"I'm speaking Common."

"Someone else is speaking"

You're Not Alone [Kali]

She was not sure if her eyes were playing tricks on her, but her companion had seemed to nod in response to her question. Silarial chewed on her fingertips, one habit she was never completely aware of doing. Her Kelvic friend then jerked her head, her beautiful steel eyes calling out to Silarial, a gesture the young Snowsong interpreted as ‘this way.’

Hmmm... I have a feeling this is going to be a guessing game as much as this is a hunting trip, she thought as she followed Kali’s lead. She knew it would be challenging for them to communicate this way, and Silarial could already feel herself regretting her lack of knowledge about sled dogs. She was just glad Kali could still understand her despite being in her animal form. That alone made her feel better somehow.

Silarial cast her eyes around while she trailed after her companion, taking in the rare sight. She had never gone this far from the city, not even the last time she ventured out with Miria. Freshly fallen snow adorned the leaves of the trees, the white almost washing out the green of the clearing. The faint smell of the woods were all around them. Deep inside, she wished there were more trees in Avanthal besides those at Frostfawn Hold and Tree Retreat. Their city definitely should have more green, most preferably around her Hold, if she had a say on it.

Kali’s muted woof brought her wandering mind back to the present, breaking the almost silence that enveloped them. She mentally chided herself for always losing her head in random thoughts, reminding herself that predators could be lurking nearby. At this rate. she would miss something important if she don't pay more attention to Kali.

Her Zepherian companion seemed to have found something of importance. Crouching beside Kali, the ever curious Vantha peeked at what her friend was poring over. Lying on the snow was a large paw print almost the size of her palm. She did not know how to associate a track to the animal that left it, but the only thing she was quite sure about was it didn’t come from the hooves of either caribous or deers.

She rose upon seeing Kali motion forward to the direction of the tracks. Silarial stared at the imprint before looking at Kali’s eyes, a question forming in her mind as they walked on. “Kali, do you know what animal made the print?” Immediately after asking, she internally slapped her forehead for being such an idiot. Of course, Kali wouldn’t be able to answer to that. “I’m sorry, I forgot you can't speak right now... Oops.” she continued sheepishly, her cheeks flaming from embarrassment.

If she was going to be of any use, she would need to focus on what they were doing. With that in mind, Silarial bit her lips and tried to shut out the noise that constantly ran through her head. Concentrate Silarial, don’t be a dead weight, she reminded herself. Without knowing it, she was walking closer beside the Kelvic hound, one hand clenched tight over her chest while the other rested on the hilt of her short sword. She had no idea how to wield the weapon, but Hai, if a wolf jumps out on them she’s more than ready to fight back.
