While Sylira is by far the most civilized region of Mizahar, countless surprises and encounters await the traveler in its rural wilderness. Called the Wildlands, Syliran's wilderness is comprised of gradual rolling hills in the south that become deep wilderness in the north. Ruins abound throughout the wildlands, and only the well-marked roads are safe.

The Wildlands Information
Sylira's sweeping wilderness covers a vast quarter of Eastern Mizahar, sitting approximately where the ancient civilisation of Alahea once stood. Mainly temperate in climate, weather patterns can vary from north to south. In the furthest northern fringes of the region, forest and wetland turns into a boreal type climate. In the far south monsoon like winds and rains buffet the coastlines.
Topographically, the southern half of the Wildlands is generally hilly, with areas verging on mountains around Syliras and Zeltiva. The two most notable ranges in the region are the Cobalt Mountains, straddling Syliras and travelling the western edge of the wilderness, and the Zastoska Mountains that funnel wayfarers through the narrow Mirahil Pass and into Zeltiva. The north and east are generally flat plains, with the northern areas near Ravok and Nyka holding wetland and temperate bogs. Woodland and forest covers much of the flat and hilly land region wide.
The coasts consist of sheer cliffs and pebble beaches in the extreme north, and anything south (and inclusive of) Mathews Bay. The beaches around Nyka and Sunberth are generally sandy.
There are marked roads in some parts of the Wildlands, especially near Syliras, where Knights patrol the routes to try and keep travellers safe. However, beyond the unmarked roads are scores of ruins, monuments, and curiosities. Some relics of a bygone age, some more mysterious still. Wild creatures prowl the shadows and forests, and even wilder magic lingers and twists bleak areas of wilderness. Many explorers still travel the wilderness, and so you may bump into a wayfarer or two when leaving the marked roads.
There is much hidden beneath the Wildlands too. Underground networks of pre-Valterrian tunnels and caves wind beneath the forests and even the cities, nearly all of it undiscovered. Some areas of the wilderness hold ancient burial mounds and catacombs too, often sealed by magic, or simply by time's passage. |
