Betelan “Lan” Whitesquall

Physical Information

Race: Human, Drykas
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Birthday: 62nd, Autumn, 493.
Birthplace: Whitesquall Pavilion, Opal Clan, Endrykas
Mother: Arya Whitesquall, Webber of the Sapphire Clan, Dead
Father: Setron Whitesquall, Healer of the Opal Clan, Ankal of the Whitesquall Pavilion, Dead
Siblings: Dehlya Whitesquall, 8 years old

Appearance:
Lan is a rather small person (about 5’7”). It is far from being what he prefers about himself, since he is also quite thin. In fact, he does not seem muscular enough to lift the heavy medicinal bags he always carries with him, or put a broken bone back in its rightful spot. He wasn’t lucky enough to inherit from his father’s built, appearing pretty frail. The long black hair that run down to his waist, loosely tied with a knot-patterned leather strap, and his baby face usually do not help differentiating him from a young girl, and most only get an angry glance from his teal blue eyes when reminding him. His skin is lightly tanned, thanks to his nomad life, making a great contrast with the heavily-colored pieces of clothing he loves and the blue Windmark tattooed on his face. The only other distinctive mark would be a scar running from his right shoulder to his hip.

Character Concept

Lan is from the quiet, almost unnoticeable type. He goes through life without creating a lot of disturbance, worshipping Caiyha and Rak’keli, doing a proper job healing horses rather than humans, which he finds a tad too noisy. Brawling and boasting are not for him, since he keeps avoiding conflict. He might appear mentally weak, not standing his ground when he doesn’t feel it’s necessary. He usually doesn’t trust people easily with his thoughts and feelings, which can seem quite unusual for a Drykas. Though, when he trusts someone, he does with all his might, and the same thing goes for love. Eyni is, for now, the only “person” who can have his back, and he’d be ready to die for his Strider.

Character History

Arya was the third wife of the Ankal of the Whitesquall Pavilion, and she was in labour. Her husband already had six children, all girls, and he was eager to finally have his first heir. She was truly hoping it would be a male, but one she could bring up to be gentler and less prompt to anger. Pacing up and down like a caged Strider, Setron was also waiting for the deliverance. And the Gods were in a good enough mood to grant their wishes.

In the Ankal’s eyes, Lan’s calm was like an offense. He never spoke his mind, being secretive about what he’d feel, think, or believe. On the other hand, he asked pertinent questions, learning passionately everything he could teach about the Web or medicine, be it to heal mankind or Striders. The boy grew fond of these animals, that were sometimes much wiser than some men, and he ended up considering them as full-fledged people, even friends. He was uncomfortable in the crowded pavilion where he was regarded with envy as the heir. His mother was the only person he really loved and who loved him back.

The day he was finally chosen was probably the best of his life. He was out, picking up medicinal herbs with his father close to the Zindal Bay when he arrived. He was the most beautiful thing Lan could have imagined when he was dreaming of this moment. The strider was similar to a silver blade cutting through the Sea of Grass, galloping at full speed in his direction. For the young boy, it was probably the first time he could see a glimpse of pride in the Ankal’s eyes.

The second best day was the birth of his little sister, Dehlya. He was already eleven years old, his Windmark still fresh on his face, trying to help out by keeping under surveillance the potions being brewed. It went well, but the Ankal disappointment was great at seeing yet another female being born in his pavilion.

Starting that day, he began muttering about his pavilion being under a curse, and experimenting in his laboratory –a small tent in which all his alembics and herbs were kept. Being the only one interested in brewing and such, Lan was dragged into a plot he had no way of understanding. That would be a lesson carved in his skin that magic is never carelessly used. While attempting to overcome the malediction, the Djed backfired, destroying the whole pavilion, killing most of its inhabitants, including Arya, and a couple of striders. The Ankal suffered a major injury, losing his left arm and being burnt to a high degree. Luckily, the boy was just coming out of the tent and wasn’t lethally hurt.

They were offered some time to recover in a Harmony House, during which the Clan discussed the line of events that led to this disaster. It was easy to decide that none of the wives or daughters were involved in it, but Lan’s case was a bit more difficult to untangle. He was there and probably took part in the making of whatever caused this. The level of his involvement and comprehension was expected to be low, so they agreed to be indulgent with him. He would be banned from the Sea of Grass like his father, the Whitesquall Pavilion would be disbanded and forgotten, but he would be allowed to keep his Strider and take whatever he’d need to survive.

Lan didn’t even have the time to leave the Sea of Grass before his father’s death. He wasn’t really eager to travel with him and left him lying on the ground according to the Drykas’ tradition. Even though it didn’t strike him hard, the banishment and his mother’s death were a heavy burden on the adolescent, and learning to roam around the world on his own was quite frightening.

The next two years appear to be all blurry, blasted off by the Djed Storm while he was in Avanthal. That’s where he is now, trying to help the healers with the sudden burst of illnesses in the city...
