45th of Fall, 505 Theo could hear the sounds of a raucous party fading into the background. Hopping from ship to ship, he was clearly moving carefully to avoid disturbing any of his little cousins who were sleeping soundly. The adults, their parents, could be heard carrying on aboard the larger vessels that were moored a short distance behind him. Tonight was a major celebration, he couldn't recall which one, which means all of the adults from all of the major pods were drunk, dancing happily and sacrificing what they could to bring the continued benevolence of Laviku. As was common, most of the children had been shepherded away after the feast to make more room on the appointed party barges. Theo's head was throbbing. At 15 he hadn't quite gotten the hang of drinking wine with the adults and his head was throbbing. He sobered up quickly as he slipped his way across the dozens of ships that had been shackled together for the party. His huge frame was much more at home on the bobbing and swaying vessels of his people than the dank and dirty streets of any city, and even in his slightly impaired state he had no issue with the pedestrian acrobatics of traversing the fleet. At the moment he only had one thing in mind, the peace and quiet of The Defiance. As he was climbing a rope up onto a particularly large barge that, he recalled, was working as a daycare for many of his cousins that didn't always travel with a regular pod, he picked up the sounds of a disturbance. Curious about the source of the noise he pulled himself up onto the main deck of the hulking vessel with urgency. Once his feet were firmly planted on deck he was stunned by the scene that was unfolding. There was a pack of 5 boys, his age or slightly younger that were bunched together on the far end of the ship. He tried his best to make out who the figures were, but given the poor lighting afforded by the scant number of oil lamps sprinkled across the deck of the ship it was impossible. He didn't need his eyes to notice that something had got them riled up, however. Deciding that, in this instance, discretion would be the better part of valor he tucked himself in the shadows and craned his neck to try and discover more about the scene. Suddenly he heard a voice cry out from the far side of the deck, while he can't quite make out the words it sounds like the voice of a young girl. Her shout elicits some scattered chuckling from the assembled group and one of the boys leans forward and seems to give her a rough shove. Theo can hear an angry noise from the far side of the boat as the boy recoils in shock. The other children must have found someone smaller to pick on and were toying with their prey. This type of scrap wasn't unusual among the pods. All Svefra were family, and what was family without the ritual of bullying. Nevertheless, the disparity of numbers leant a certain flavour of injustice to his particular situation that set the young man's blood boiling. Never one to shy away from a scrap, he picks himself up off of the deck and makes his way towards the gathered assembly. |
