Character ConceptJess is a Reimancer, caravan guard, and swordsman, who has grown weary of the constant travel after losing his father to a Daggerhand raid. Having heard of the Syliran Knights need of warrior mages, he heads for Syliras with a heavy heart, and a need for vengance.
Character HistoryJess spent most of his life with his father, guarding caravans, and trading wares. His mother, a trader and also a caravaneer, died in childbirth, but Martin Carraway never once let his son shoulder the blame. Trained and initiated in Reimancy and basic Shielding by his father, the two would often put on displays in the villages they travelled through, lighting torches and braziers with their Res, earning coin in tips, and performing at festivals for a set purse. He was taught basic combat skills from the other guards, and using a gladius his father had given to him as a gift he learned the fundamentals of swordplay. He grew up with an idyllic view of the Syliran knights, having seen them in action, and having briefly travelled with a member during his time on the road, but refused to leave his father alone on the road, no matter how much he longed to join the order.
A few weeks before the change in season, the caravan they were protecting was set on by a group of Daggerhand thieves on the outskirts of Sunberth. The Carraways and the other guards fought vailiantly, but their numbers were few, and they were overwhelmed in moments. When the dust cleared, all but Jess had been killed, the younger Carraway being lucky enough to roll into a ditch after a mace blow knocked him unconscious. When he rose, his father's corpse lay in the road, throat cut and possessions stolen. Jess buried his father, and walked the long miles to a nearby village. Here he had his wounds treated, and waited for the next party headed for Syliras, hoping to join the Knights, and leave his nomadic past behind him.
