Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

The Velvet Curtain

The world’s oldest profession has a presence in every city. In Riverfall, it finds itself in The Velvet Curtain. During the day, one would find the façade unassuming, given it’s purpose, with a large window at the front with a deep red velvet curtain inside, and a plethora of rich, dark wood making up the entranceway. One may also notice that there are no other windows on any side of the establishment.

When evening falls however, there is little doubt as to what service is provided behind its guarded doors. In the large window, a lingerie-clad woman lays, sits, and otherwise entices passing men inside. The woman may vary from night to night, but she is always clad just enough to be decent, but barely.

Inside, you are immediately greeted by woman to escort you to a table, who will either introduce your personal hostess for the night, take your drink orders, or leave you to yourself, dependent on your business there and how much you’re willing to spend. The room is lavishly decorated, immediately giving the impression of a contemporary decadence. There is a low stage at the far end, with a continuous stream of barely dressed dancers winding their way around the pole set at the center. A series of oft-filled seats surround the stage, with miza boxes in front of each one, to tip favorite dancers, or to request a personal audience when the dancer’s set it done.

Couches and tables populate the rest of the room, with high backed chairs to give each table a thin sense of privacy. Doors and darkened mirrors discreetly surround the room, with a handful of muscled Akalaks to quickly take care of anyone who gets too rowdy. There is no formal bar, though there is a bartender’s area in the back corner. Customers are discouraged from ordering themselves, as there are several wandering hostesses ready to take drink orders.

If you have the mizas, you may find yourself taken through one of the many side doors into a more private room. The rooms are all the same: unfurnished save for a plush bed at the center of the room, and a large mirror on the wall. Here, you can negotiate for just about anything with one of the ladies. Be respectful though: violence is not tolerated, and the ladies need only call out and a bouncer will quickly appear from a hidden door and you’ll find yourself tossed out into the street.

There are girls of nearly every species, to cater to all tastes, and most will tell you of being bought out of slavery in far lands by the previous madam. In addition to safety for the girls, safety for the guests is of the utmost importance. A healer visits weekly to inspect the women, both physically and mentally, to verify they are clean, fit, and able to work. Part of entering a back room with a girl is agreeing to a private inspection, and if there is anything untoward in that area, the woman is required to decline his private audience.

While a city of men requires such an establishment to keep the peace, the prospect of children is ever-looming. All women allowed to work at the Velvet Curtain are, in one way or another, unfit to bear Akalak children, to make sure any woman able to breed isn’t removed from the breeding pool. In a hard-fought battle with the Council, the previous madam won the right to offer sterilization to the women working there. It is a difficult choice, however; if a woman refuses sterilization and becomes pregnant, she must be turned over to the Oathmaster and carry the baby to term. It is an extremely difficult choice, and is the dark side of the women who appear to so happily attend to the male population of Riverfall: be made sterile for life, or risk bearing an Akalak child that may kill her.

Silka re Bashina
Image
Name: Silka re Bashina
Race: Eypharian (6 arms)
DoB: Winter 57th, 478AV (34, appears late 20’s)
PoB: Ahnatep, Eyktol
Title: Owner/Madam
Skills: Seduction 82, Socialization 75, Leadership 52, Dance 34, Cosmetology 32
Gnosis: None
Additional Info: Silka is a beautiful woman who can make any man feel like the center of the world. She still speaks Arumenic, and will do so on occasion for an exotic appeal. Many of the lonely, wealthy men of Riverfall may claim to be in her confidence, but she is beholden to no man, and intends to stay that way for a while longer yet.

She inherited the Velvet Curtain in Spring 512, after the previous owner vanished in the Djed Storm. By that point, she was already the most accomplished woman on staff, and was happy to retire the life. You’ll never get her in one of the back rooms, but she does play hostess for a hefty price. She’s most often found in a gem-encrusted bustier, a gift from one of her regular, more wealthy clients. Her hair color changes daily, but she favors a shocking confection of pink curls.

Morgal Trokas

Name: Morgal Trokas
Race: Akalak
DoB: Spring 15th, 469AV (43)
PoB: Riverfall
Title: Head Bouncer
Skills: Bodybuilding 62, Unarmed combat 59, Observation 52, Intimidation 45
Gnosis: 1 Wysar
Additional Info: A silent and stoic shadow, Morgal is the only employee who has been with the Velvet Curtain since its opening. Like all of the bouncers, he does not interact with the customers unless things get out of hand, though he most often patrols the other side of the mirrors of the back rooms, which are connected to a single hallway behind them for working girls and bouncers. Occasionally, he can be seen outside of the establishment, walking groups of the women home. Rumors fly that he has a deep, unrequited love for Silka, but neither have confirmed it and the supposed evidence is nothing more than heresay.
