Winter 80, 512
Soren Frostfawn strode through the city purposefully, he was dressed and prepared for a light day of hunting in the Wastes, a typical activity for the Vantha man. All around him Icewatch patrols and elderly citizens roamed the city looking for suspicious persons or behaviors. Many felt annoyed at the nanny like behavior the elders were forcing on them but no one could deny the effect they had had on the city. Most had been astonished to find that crime had decreased rapidly when the humiliating prospect of being caught by a revered elder was recognized by the silly individuals who had taken advantage of the city’s hard times.
Luckily Soren was headed out into the Wastes and could ignore all that was happening in the city and his own life for a small time. Many enjoyed escaping into the Wastes for some alone time despite the danger. It was one of the reasons some hunters took the risk of hunting alone. Whatever Soren’s thoughts might have been on the matter, a gentle tugging on his right elbow interrupted him. When he turned to look at what was trying to get his attention, he found himself looking into the face of an elderly Vantha woman who smiled politely up at him.
“Hello young man. You look like quite a strapping young hunter, what are you doing on a beautiful day like this?” she said and her eyes flicked up for a moment to take in the cloudy skies. In Avanthal, even when it was cloudy it was still considered good weather as long as there was no snow. The clouds didn’t even seem dark enough to threaten of snow though they would obscure the city’s view of the aurora when night came.
Soren would have to think carefully before responding to the old woman. The elders were stopping everyone to ask random questions, so perhaps she was suspicious of his motives and movements though he had done nothing but walk towards his destination. While he had done nothing that would get him in trouble, the prospect of spending his day getting questioned by Icewatch because of the woman’s suspicions was not a welcome one. Perhaps she was just lonely and wished for a few moments of companionship to lighten her day. It was hard to tell what the elders wanted these days. Perhaps it was all conjecture and she was just trying to be polite to a passer by. Regardless, he knew he would have to think carefully before answering the woman despite her friendly smile and happy green eyes. The events of recent days had given everyone reason to rethink what was on the minds of the older citizens of Avanthal.
