Winter 80, 512

Soren Frostfawn strode through the city purposefully, he was dressed and prepared for a light day of hunting in the Wastes, a typical activity for the Vantha man. All around him Icewatch patrols and elderly citizens roamed the city looking for suspicious persons or behaviors. Many felt annoyed at the nanny like behavior the elders were forcing on them but no one could deny the effect they had had on the city. Most had been astonished to find that crime had decreased rapidly when the humiliating prospect of being caught by a revered elder was recognized by the silly individuals who had taken advantage of the city’s hard times.

Luckily Soren was headed out into the Wastes and could ignore all that was happening in the city and his own life for a small time. Many enjoyed escaping into the Wastes for some alone time despite the danger. It was one of the reasons some hunters took the risk of hunting alone. Whatever Soren’s thoughts might have been on the matter, a gentle tugging on his right elbow interrupted him. When he turned to look at what was trying to get his attention, he found himself looking into the face of an elderly Vantha woman who smiled politely up at him.

“Hello young man. You look like quite a strapping young hunter, what are you doing on a beautiful day like this?” she said and her eyes flicked up for a moment to take in the cloudy skies. In Avanthal, even when it was cloudy it was still considered good weather as long as there was no snow. The clouds didn’t even seem dark enough to threaten of snow though they would obscure the city’s view of the aurora when night came.

Soren would have to think carefully before responding to the old woman. The elders were stopping everyone to ask random questions, so perhaps she was suspicious of his motives and movements though he had done nothing but walk towards his destination. While he had done nothing that would get him in trouble, the prospect of spending his day getting questioned by Icewatch because of the woman’s suspicions was not a welcome one. Perhaps she was just lonely and wished for a few moments of companionship to lighten her day. It was hard to tell what the elders wanted these days. Perhaps it was all conjecture and she was just trying to be polite to a passer by. Regardless, he knew he would have to think carefully before answering the woman despite her friendly smile and happy green eyes. The events of recent days had given everyone reason to rethink what was on the minds of the older citizens of Avanthal.

Assistance with a Smile (Soren Frostfawn)

Soren noticed the Icewatch only vaguely. Their presence the past few days had been abrupt and always there so by now he just seemd to regard them as part of the scenery. It was a little annoying to say the least, but the wastes were a second home to him. It seemed to bring him solace and quiet as he hunted for the next game to feed himself and gain a little coin. Not to say he wasn't appreciative of the Icewatch's work, they were a very respected guild of warriors and he admired them. They just seemed to be everywhere now and with good reason.

The recent string of crime in Avanthal was atrocious and it was unforgivable. It seemed the Icewatch was needed in it's full to govern the people of Avanthal. It was necessary, he shrugged, it didn't really concern him. Soren wasn't about to break the law, especially with the dire polar bears. The enormous beasts were a sight to behold and Soren never in his wildest imagination ever dared to upset them or their bondmates.

These were sad and dark times for Avanthal, especially to a Frostfawn. Kayin Frostfawn was recently found dead. Poor Jedara...if she ever came back from his death she would be the strongest woman Soren had ever known. He could only imagine what the woman was going through. Kayin Frostfawn was the leader of the Frostfawn hold and beloved by many of the Frostfawn. Soren alwasy admired the man, he was something to aspire after, as Kayin was a strong person and loved the kelvics and animals very much as Soren did.

He felt the tug on his right elbow and looked at the kindly elder woman. He would have to be cautious. He wasn't doing anything wrong by any means but he didn't want to be questioned all day. The only problem was to give an answer that wasn't going to lead to more questions. Soren sighed and decided to just be honest,
"I'm just going to go out to the wastes to do a little hunting. Maybe bring home some food and pelts home."He said this with as much honesty and sincerity as he could muster and with a warm smile. Her motives, whether she was an elder trying to get information about a suspicious person or just a kind elder woman trying to talk, would be determined soon.

The woman removed her hand from Soren’s sleeve and smiled happily. She seemed genuinely pleased which might reassure Soren of her good intentions. The small elderly woman crossed her arms in front of her and tilted her head to the side as she regarded Soren.

“What a coincidence, I was hoping to bring a friend into the Wastes today for some hunting but I’m far too old to participate so I was going to try and find a nice young hunter to accompany us. Morwen must have made our paths cross for this is certainly fortuitous. What do you say young man? Would you really send an old woman into the Wastes with scant protection? My friend can take care of herself well but an extra pair of eyes always helps. Besides, I’m sure she would appreciate company that can help her in the hunt.” The old woman chortled quietly and gave Soren an expecting look. Before he would even have a chance to process her request and open his mouth to reply the old woman tossed her hands up and laughed with joy as though Soren had just said he would accompany her and invite all his friends as well.

“Perfect! I didn’t think you would disagree. We are going to have such a lovely time. My name is Amarylis. Amarylis Skyglow that is. I run the Nimble Thimble over in the main part of the city. I just do sewing and the like. What is your name? Oh I am just so pleased, I’m certain we are going to have a wonderful time.” Amarlyis reached up to grasp Soren’s arm once again and tugged on him gently to follow her.

“What is your name young man? Pardon me, I am just so pleased that I can’t remember my manners. Do you hunt often?” Amarylis looked up at Soren with a sweet smile and waited for his reaction.

Assistance with a Smile (Soren Frostfawn)

Postby Soren Frostfawn on March 25th, 2013, 3:40 am

Soren blinked in a sort of confusion. The old woman was going on about his help without him saying a word of assent about it or any sort of interest at all. Of course Soren immediately mentally said yes because he enjoyed helping people whenever he could and never said no to those in need but still it would have been nice to answer the woman before she assumed he would be up for it. Still however abrupt the woman might have been ,or maybe excitable might be a better word, he still thought the woman was kind and genuine.

Soren was going to the wastes to hunt anyway so accompanying two people and escorting them through the wastes was absolutely no problem. The only problem was Soren was a novice at best at hunting and wilderness survival. He briefly considered acting confident to the woman but immediately pushed that thought aside. Soren wasn't one for lying, no matter how incompetent he may appear to the woman.
"I am Soren Frostfawn and I would love to accompany you and your friend to the wastes. I must tell you though Miss Amarylis that I am very new to hunting and the wilderness. With that truth out of the way however, I am very confident that I can accompany and help you and your friend on this trip and will put every ounce of my skill to assist you."

Soren bit his lip as he was sure the elder Skyglow would hear this and continue her search for a competent hunter. He decided to give her Miria's name if she decided to move on but only if she decided that he wasn't enough for her trip. He waited with a little anxiousness for her answer, either way he was going to go to the wastes that evening, but he found himself really wanting to help this kind woman who owned a sewing shop.
