During the game characters interact and in turn create a Bond that they can build upon, and that Bond is a reflection upon the tangible similarities as well as differences between the two characters. There exists a variety of ways to make and establish a Bond, and that Bond can in turn grow in multiple forms depending on what transpires.
Branches
A variety of Bonds exist for a character to explore, and that variety is based on the personal aspect the Bond has maintained with such a person. To keep it simple however we will narrow it down to three main Branches that a person can keep up with, ultimately allowing where they will stand in terms of alignment with this character. It is however in those three Branches a few more might exist, each dependent on what kind of relationship the person wants with this character.
Stranger- The main branch that all first start out with. It is simplistic in nature as it determines whether or not a person will be an Acquaintance or an Adversary, mostly due to the nature of the cause the person might portray. If this character turns out to like a person he just met, then chances are you stand ready to become a Friend. If however you find this character disliking a person, then odds are a probably Enemy seems likely to occur.
Friend- The branch of the "favored" so to speak. This is a branch that presents much opportunity when it comes to the character, as it allows a person the ability foster friendship with the passage of time. Maintaining that friendship is what's important however as too much time apart may weaken the Bond, and the stronger the Bond is then the longer it may take for it to finally be broken. Friendship isn't the only sort of Bond that can exist in this Branch, love can even bloom if this character is willing or inclined to allow such a thing. How the Bond grows as well as reflects on that growth is up to you however.
Enemy The branch of the "despised" as it is referred to. The branch is a side which involves the darker nature of this character, and the creation of much woe or spite as one develops this sort of Bond. Opportunity isn't as forthcoming in this branch as it is in the Friend, but there does exist a separate part of the branch where one may find themselves a respected adversary at best. Rivalry is something not to be taken lightly however as it does come with its own pros and cons, it is however the main branch that the Enemy follows that proves most dangerous. The greater one projects himself as an threat, then the larger the enemy may appear to the character. This is a bargain for a role most dangerous, as only the path to war can stem from such a relation.
Improvement
Improvement of a particular Bond is dependent on similarities and differences between two characters, and while this is true there also exists a multitude of ways to improve the relationship. People have likes, dislikes, and qualities that they tend to favor, and while they may find agreement or disagreement in things; actions are what speak louder than words at any time. Doing things or promoting things that the character agrees with, or sharing in the same ideals the character shares is a great start to improving a well built Friendship. Or you can oppose him and become his greatest enemy yet, always being the obstacle that may challenge some kind of belief he holds.
So really it is up to you, the player, to be creative and find ways that may either make or break a Friendship/Rivalry with the character. The most important aspect is to do so while having fun with it!
