Orion, 2nd Day of Spring, 513 AV It was hard to believe that this had really happened. Orion Michaels, a doctor no more; instead, he was a squire. A petching squire. Of all the things in the world, he couldn’t have expected that he’d end up taking up the sword in defense of Syliras. Not that he could do anything right now anyways. He barely knew which end of a sword to hold. The path ahead was difficult, he knew that much. Why, he couldn’t even claim the most basic of skill in any of the knights weapons, and he’d scarcely even rode upon a mount. That he was required to reach a level of competency was a worry that made him wonder just how long he would be a squire for. Thankfully, there was someone who would be beside him each step of the way. Someone that would make sure he didn’t hurt himself too badly. Knight Captain Dinah Lorene. Orion was surprised when he found himself as her squire. The way they met, the way they interacted, the way he shamelessly flirted for bells upon bells, it just didn’t seem possible that she would take the doctor under her wing like this. Did she something in him? Why him? Was it his charm? Was he a natural with the blade and didn’t know it? Was he just lucky, or was it none of the above? He would have plenty of time to figure that out over the coming seasons. One thing he would learn quickly about Dinah, though, was this: She was a taskmaster. “Come on, Orion! Pick up your feet. It can’t be that heavy.” Her sweet, teasing voice mocked him at every step. Slow as they may have come. For the first time in his life, Orion was wearing the wonderful armor of the knights. Plates, mail, interlocked together to provide the absolute and utmost protection. And it was bulky as shyke. Each labored step required the new squire dig deeper and deeper into his resolve. The heavy clank of metal against a stone step echoed throughout the corridor as Orion slowly made his way up towards the training area. Only it had taken far too long for them to make the relatively short trek. See, Dinah had made a little game of things. Get a question right, ascend a step. Get it wrong, descend two. They would go all day until Orion made it to the top. Once he made it, they could be done. That had been bells ago, and the blue eyed man could barely move his legs. It was going to hurt. A lot. |
