Appearance:
Uleru favours humans in her appearance. The shape of her body was borrowed from a young human woman who she found to be particularly lovely, with a few scattered scales and webbing added in very Konti-eusqe detail. She stands 5'4 tall with a modest, streamline shape, and a rounded face. A face usually seen with a playful, impish, or even wolfish smile depending on who she is with, and what kind of play she is engaged in. But thats where her human similarities end.
Since her hair is made of the same material as her body it refuses to act as normal hair would. It reaches the middle of her back and is heavy with constant moisture, always sticking to her skin when she is out of the ocean. But as soon as it touches water it's weightless and will buffet with the smallest of currents. Her body itself is almost translucent, so that she resembles living water more than a sentient spiecies. And this can have some odd effects in the light, where she will shimmer and fracture any light that passes through her into whatever color her body has shifted to.
And this colour shifts in a very chameleon-like way; colours merging and dissipating like ink in a glass of water. They are mostly tied to her moods or interesting pieces of scenery she is trying to emulate. This unique body can also hold a phosphorescence in the dark, which has come in useful when leading sailors through storms or around hazards.
Concept:
When you first meet the Otani there is a good chance you will be struck with just how airy and vague she can be. There is no such thing as a straight answer with her, nothing is more interesting than a puzzle, and anything can be made into a game. She is easily distracted and often preoccupied, leading her conversations in many different directions at the same time. Many conclude that her mind just doesn't work in the same orderly way a humans does; writing it off as some sort of genetic trait that plagues her race.
Thankfully this frivolous exterior is only skin deep. Uleru is really a surprisingly complex creature. Her religion to Laviku is her core but she still has impulses and curiosity towards the land-bound races. She is fascinated with the everyday life on the surface that many people take for granted, and feels guilty for such interests when her only concern should be the world under the waves. To deal with this guilt she overcompensates with her duty toward Laviku. Respect towards herself is trivial but she will demand respect for her god, and this will be one of the very few situations that will turn her gravely serious.
As a result she is fequent to pray, ask tribute from sailors, and punish those who blaspheme her beloved god. Anyone who is caught polluting His ocean, being wastful of His bounty or failing to pay respect and tribute can find their ship being led to a rocky outcrop to be gutted, or else be pulled from the deck and drowned. But those who she finds satisfactory in their worship can find themselves a useful friend as she is quick to help them navigate the turbulent seas and will bring gifts of her own; typically of interesting shells and pearls.
Character History:
[Summer 215 - Spring 513]Born in the outer reaches of the Sebakem ocean, the Otani has spent the intervening years slowly making her way through the bays and inlets of the oceans without any destination in mind. Letting herself drift with the will and tides of her god and her own short-sighted wants. She has never travelled backwards or seen the same place twice. Uleru has set anchor at the Anchorage Flotilla as of Spring 509 and has befriending a young Svefra girl, Edreina along the way.
[Spring 513]Other than some small adventures on the Docks of Sylira and the Avitar river, Uleru has stayed near the Flotilla and Edreina. Where she was introduced to Edreina's new friend, the Myrian Razkar. The two take an immediate dislike for each other. Razkar dubs her Sea Witch, despising her for her nature and mockery. While Uleru distrusts him and his bare deadliness.
Edreina, on the other hand, flourishes under the Myrian's friendship and tutelage. She decides to go inland with Razkar, leaving Uleru feeling betrayed by her friend and cheated by Razkar. The Otani's and Myrian's rivalry comes to an explosive head while he is sailing en route to Sylira.
She survives the fight but fails to kill the Myrian for her god. Crippled by guilt for failing Laviku she flees South.
