Kanri shot awake, sweating and breathing hard. She must have had a nightmare. But she couldn't remember a thing besides the Fear it had brought to her. She was so shaken and she had no idea what was wrong. It was an odd sensation. She wiped her forehead and rolled out of bed, trembling slightly. It was earlier than she normally liked but she had to get moving and forget that Haunting Fear.
In her unfocused state of mind, she found donned her Talonsword and took her waterskin with her. She pushed out of room, unsure of where she was headed. The sky. She wanted to see the sky. She dashed through the corridors, startling any other early risers. By forcing herself to move quickly, she felt better. It shook off the Fear of her nightmare. She didn't often have dreams or nightmares but every now and then, she would get a really vivid one. But for some reason, despite the Fear, she couldn't remember her dream at all.
She burst into the Courtyard of the Sky with relief as the morning air started to bite in. The sky was only just lightening and she could still pick out the brightest of the stars. She took a deep breath and just stared at the sky. It had such a complexity of color, when she took a careful look, not just a smooth blue. If she didn't get a crook in her neck, she thought she might stay there forever.
Then, there was a brilliant flash of red. The sky light up like a crimson fire as an ember-like star exploded into view and crashed into Thunder Bay. Kanri just stood there, fixated by the magnificent display of light. As other people came to look, they all seemed so worried. Kanri became Confused. Everyone seemed so worried. At first, she wasn't quite sure why, but then she remembered the Djed storm of the previous year, and the massive damage it caused to the city. No wonder they were so afraid. Kanri shivered with the memory.
As more and more people gathered, Kanri was shoved to the front. Then, the Valintar himself approached the group, calling for Volunteers. Kanri waited and watched as others stepped forward, one by one. They all looked so well prepared! How had they thought to bring all thoyse things? Kanri nervously shifted on her feet. However, then Ardal was in the crowd too. And she noticed Iosha and some others she had briefly met earlier that season. She wouldn't be among strangers, even though there were clearly some foreigners there. Maybe she was not well prepared but she was an intelligent, young person. She was sure she could figure something out.
"I will join as well," Kanri piped up.
With a half-skipping, bubbly step, she eagerly greeted Ardal, Iosha, and some of the others, which whom she was much less familiar. She was excited now because now, she would get to go on a little adventure.
