This lazy agricultural settlement rests on the swampy shores of the Middle Suvan at the delta of The Kenash River. The River's slow moving bayou waters have bred a different sort of people - rugged, cultured, and somewhat violent. Sprawling plantations of tobacco and cotton grow on the outskirts of the swamp in the rich Cyphrus soils, while the city itself curls around the bayou and spawns decadence and sins of all sorts. Life is slower in Kenash, but the lack of pace is made up for in the excesses of food and flesh in a city where drinking, debauchery, gambling, slavery, and overbearing plantation families dominate the landscape.

Dominating most of Shipwreck Beach is the shipyard owned by Kraig Leeman, called Dreams of Zeltiva. Just off the beach is the office where Kraig handles orders and receives various construction supplies. On a large willow bar are scattered papers and, beneath them, a salt soaked ledger. This is where Kraig keeps a record of all the ships he’s made, the supplies he’s bought, and who he’d sold ships to. On the beach are enormous stacks of lumber, bent and nailed to shape the skeletons of ships in the works.

Dreams of Zeltiva is primarily a shipbuilding business, though it does cater to those in need of ship repairs as well, and has a dock to tie up the dinghies of those of high enough class to dock on the East Bank. Often he is the first to greet people to Kenash, as many come in by boat. This can often lead to a skewed first impression of the city, as Kraig’s Zeltivan sensibilities lead him to refuse the slave trade altogether. This is one of the few places in town a Freeborn can find work outside of owning his own business. Fortunately for Kraig, he gets enough business to support his employees, and ships can be quite expensive when sold.

The business also buys the wrecks of ships, taking their salty carcasses and reworking them with new materials to create a relatively low-priced but effective boat. These have created a unique quality of boat, nicknamed Barkhull Boats by the populace. They’re called this because they’re relatively low quality, and though they work well enough, they’re far from pretty. Often what will happen is a ship becomes wrecked and Kraig buys the wreck from the survivors. This gives them some spending money to survive on during their stay. If they’re able bodied and capable, Kraig employs them, paying them to fix their own ship! By the time it’s finished he gives them the option to buy it back from him at the Barkhull price. Sometimes they buy it, sometimes they don’t, but none have ever called Kraig unfair in his prices or practices.

Kraig was born in Zeltiva, the son of a wealthy member of the Sailors Guild. He grew up working the drydocks, watching the men work and working to build them himself as soon as his body was able. He was a hard worker, and it’s said that he and his father built the boat that brought him to Kenash just the two of them and a few friends. His father was in the mood to expand his influence, and so took up the ship as Captain with Kraig as his first mate, and they sailed off to become merchants of silk and spice.

They quickly became rich, moving along the coast to buy and sell goods. However, as they approached Kenash, an enormous storm took them and threw their ship against the rocks. The wreck drifted onto Shipwreck Beach, with Kraig as the only survivor, his father and his fortune lost. However, he bore the mark of Kelwyn, as the twins had saved his life in his time of need.

It’s said that Kraig tried twice to rebuild his ship, making the first Barkhull Boat out of the carcass of his own ship. However, by the time it was done he had taken to drinking, and had sold it on accident to a man that sailed off and never returned to Kenash, telling no one where he was headed. The second time he built a ship for himself he lost it in a drunken gamble. He took these happenings as a sign from the gods that his place was here, in Kenash, and he gave up trying to go home as well as quitting his drinking habit (much to the dismay of the tavern keepers, who by then were used to making a good amount of money each night off the man).

Nowadays, Kraig is a mild mannered man with a love for stories and manual labor. With no children of his own, he searches for someone worthy of passing on his legacy to. He has a great love for ship building, and though he has long forgotten how to sail he will happily teach anyone who wishes to learn the basics of ship building if they promise to work for him for a season.

Located on the elitist East Bank, sits Soles for Sale, the premier destination for quality leather footwear for men and women. The humble cobbler's shop is run by Sorenson Askara and, as one might expect, the establishment fairly drips with indulgent, lavish opulence. Approaching the main entry, visitors are met with a vision of carved wooden facing and stone cobbled walls. The deep ebony wood is marked with trailing filigree vines and intricate flowering buds - some say the commission of such workmanship is still being paid for, years after the fact. But Sorenson, when approached on the subject, demurs cheerfully, ushering you into the store with no answers.

ImageThe interior is a match for the beautiful exterior. Soft gold covers the walls, a combination of paint and luxurious fabric that tempts even the most oblivious to walk closer, to experience texture along with color sensation. In fact, one may be so enraptured by the beauty abounding at eye level that they entirely miss looking down, to the decorative, thick, and expensive carpeting layering the floor. Plush sofas and heavy armchairs are scattered throughout the space, providing prospective customers the perfect spot to be fitted and catered to - most often by Sorenson himself. Esmena can, occasionally, be prevailed upon to assist during particularly busy hours, though dealing with her can have undesired effects. Sorenson is fiercely jealous of Esmena and can be unstable when he feels that she's being admired too freely - or not freely enough.

ImageBut the footwear that can be obtained from Soles for Sale is of such quality and design that very few patrons are put off by the proprietor's quirks. Rows upon rows of low slung shoes, high boots and everything in between can be found on the shelves and in the cases of this most unusually operated shop. Regular customers have learned to carefully walk the tightrope that is Sorenson's sales floor and have come away with fantastical footwear and amusing stories to retell as a reward.

To the rear of the shop, half-hidden by display cases and a door so ornately carved as to be almost an art piece on its own, is Sorenson's workshop. The scent of leather and oils hang in the air, permeating the entire floor with a not unpleasant aroma. People wandering into the shop while Sorenson is working have often heard him speaking and laughing to himself within the recesses of the space. Though his sanity is questioned nearly daily, none can argue the man's vision, or the results he achieves with nothing more than leather and ingenuity. He has been known to experiment with paints and bells and metals, in order to create the pinnacle of high society footwear. Kenashern society competes with bloodthirsty ferocity when he offers up an original, one-of-a-kind pair of shoes for sale.

Despite the ambiguity, however, Sorenson does run quite a successful cobbler's shop, frequented by nearly all of Kenashern Dynasty - and some few wealthier freeborn.

While he plays no favorites, and pays no attention to who may currently be on the outs with his family, one sure way to get on Sorenson's bad side is to pay too much attention, good or bad, to Esmena. Borderline obsessed with the slave, Sorenson will not hesitate to either kick you out of his shop or heavily price gouge if he feels that you are being in any way inappropriate with the woman. And, since he's an Askara, the definition of 'inappropriate' varies daily - sometimes hourly.

This irks no small number of Dynasty members, but most are willing to write off the anomaly as just another Askara quirk.

Nestled along the coast of Dry Island is Tressed to Impress. The shop was built to order, by the Radacke Dynasty; a sturdy building bucking the current trend of heavy stone design. Though its wooden walls may need more frequent repainting in order to maintain their dazzling white hue, most patrons agree the effort is well worth it to stand out in a generally ostentatious city such as Kenash.

ImageOpening the cheery red door, one is greeted by the scent of various hair oils and dyes; though the work area is located at the rear of the shop, the smells of the trade do manage to filter through. Scented candles and fragrant bundles of herbs are positioned strategically throughout the common area to lessen the tell-tale aroma as much as is possible. When weather permits, the front door is left open to encourage a refreshing breeze to aid in these efforts.

The more commonplace wigs are arranged artfully in the large front window, so as to attract the most widespread clientele possible. However, further exploration reveals more fantastical creations the deeper into the interior one ventures. Cascading curls, towering sculpture, outlandish color - all are represented here. Making good use of her family's indigo crops, Ismerilda has created whimsical hair pieces in varying shades of blues and purples. Not for the faint of heart, but rather for those wishing to make a statement in any crowd; if nothing currently available will do, the Radacke does accept commissions, on a limited basis and as her muse strikes.

ImageGiven the delicate nature of some creations, frivolous 'sampling' of the wares with no intention to purchase is frowned upon. All patrons are encouraged to try on any merchandise that catches their eye, however those choosing to do so will find the proprietor hovering nearby, prepared to swoop in and remove pieces not being handled with the greatest of care.

Having gained something of a reputation for being a no-nonsense establishment, despite the sometimes outlandish nature of its stock, Tressed to Impress is currently enjoying unheralded success. In a city such as Kenash, where so much is dependent on appearances, Dynasty members and freeborn alike flock to own something truly original to set them apart from the masses.

When not monitoring her shop, she can often be found in the company of hordes of contemporaries, regaling them with tales of derring-do and mischief. Generally seen sporting one of her own colorfully-hued creations, she stands out in a crowd even without the aid of the dramatic flair that she employs. If you can convince her to literally drop the act, she can become quite down-to-earth and pleasant. But enjoy it while it lasts, her personality shifts with the wind and soon enough she will be inflicting bad art on the city once more.

On the streets of Kenash things can be hectic and harried, either from excitement of what the city has to offer or working to keep the elite few in luxury. However there is one place where those who can pay the price can go to slow down, relax and enjoy the little luxuries of life. This is the Kenash Spa and Resort.

Located behind wrought iron gates is a grand estate with a main building and three outlying buildings. The stone drive leads up from the streets, through the gates, curling around the right, then center and finally left most building. The grounds are finely manicured, and one can see various slaves and workers constantly working to keep it clean and trimmed without looking overworked and garish.

The first building is a large wooden structure with elegant adornments and windows. This is the meeting halls, where ambassadors can meet with city officials or even Dynasties can come together to collaborate...or intimidate. The third building, where the stone drive ends, is simply the carriage house. Out front is a wood hitching post for horses, and there is always a young boy waiting to take care of the guests horses and carriages. This is also where if one had a slave driver, they would be required to sit and wait.

It is the middle building that draws the eye. Richly crafted from the very Cyprus wood of the swamps the building stands majestically betwixt the two, rising up to two stories. The porch is clearly designed for a place to relax while one waits their turn or appointment with rockers and tables. The tables are filled with sweet smelling flowers and refreshments can be had.

Inside is a clean and crisp room, with a long counter at the back. Behind the counter two slaves are always present to check in guests and to escort them to their various activities. The decoration is lavish and rich, rugs spilling across the wooden floors that beg to be walked upon bare footed, to feel the plushness beneath your feet. There are doors to the right and to the left, depending on your desires.

The left goes through a hall where one can get manicures, pedicures, facials, and waxing done. This hall has lounges that are padded and preserved. There are at the ready young workers that will bring you lemonades, water, or other refreshments while the cosmetologist on hand takes care of your needs.

If you are requiring more in depth packages, such as mud baths, massages, oil treatments, aromatherapy or perhaps all of the above then you would go to your right. This leads to a hall with five doors and each door opens to an identical room.

Each room comes equipped with a deep copper tub for mud baths or hot baths, a settee for relaxing as one receives aromatherapy or meditation, and a massage table with a bell that when rang a Masseuse enters the room. The decor is classic and elegant in whites and neutrals, and hooks line the walls for clothing to be hung up.

ImageAt first glance, the weather beaten exterior of Jakeepa's School of Feminine Arms leaves much to be desired. There is no advertising sign, no elaborate landscaping, no intricate brick work leading up to the door; in fact, nothing about the place hints that it is still an operational business. But the peeling green paint and tightly drawn curtains hide a surprising variety of riches – for the right kind of citizen. Feminine Arms offers the women of Kenash a safe environment and expert instruction in self-defense. Despite welcoming clientele from freeborn and Dynasty ranks alike, Dynasty members rarely deign to be seen in such an ill-kempt venue. For those that do, though, as well as their freeborn peers, there is much knowledge to be had.

Behind the creaking, salt-laden front door is a simple, open room; rows of benches line the aging brick walls, leaving the middle of the floor clear for instruction, demonstration and practice. The floor itself is a golden wood, worn smooth with age and kept meticulously clean of debris; no scratches mar the surface and no dents from errant heels. This is due entirely to the strict ‘no shoes’ policy of the owner. Shelves are provided at either side of the entrance to hold the clients’ footwear, and leather-soled booties are available for training purposes.

Classes follow a 7 day schedule, which is adhered to without deviation, but no appointments or reservations are necessary for casual instruction. Any woman wishing to attend the group training sessions need simply show up, pay the fee, and pay attention. Recognizing that some women have a hard time committing to lessons amongst a group of strangers, Jakeepa does offer one on one training at a higher fee. Training options include ataniA weighted scarf, never bladed for classwork., ribbon dagger, iron fan, throwing dagger, and “monkey’s fistA simple three-strand knot at the end of a length of string or rope, usually containing a weight.”. All weaponry explored within Jakeepa's School is ideal for a feminine handling; all are easily concealed, fashionable, and rely on finesse more than brute strength to be successful.

With the remaining gems from her bridal pouch, Jakeepa purchased a dilapidated building on the edge of Kenash proper and began to officially offer her lessons to any free woman in Kenash - for a fee.

I'd love to help out you out with the seasonal challenges, Shayna, but... Lilou rarely, if ever, leaves the plantation. You'd probably have to find an excuse to be at Riverwave for them to meet... it's pretty restricting when it comes to co-op threads :)

This Week in Kenash!


This is my little check in, I decided to keep you as players in the loop of my thoughts and plans that I will post what I am planning. This way if there is something you want to see done you can poke me or see that I am working on it. This will also allow me to keep tabs on promised threads etc and so forth.

So this week in Kenash:

  • Writing up Fun locations, including a Beach and a lovers hidey spot. With so much riding on appearances and who is doing what in Kenash when you have a lover that isn't quite worthy of your station, you need a place to "slum' it ;D
  • Start work on a couple of moderated threads that has to do with the attacks on Dynasty high-priced slaves. -I almost feel sorry for those who are Radacke slaves...almost.. :D-
  • Begin Implementing the Rujaro.
  • Continue to help players with NPC's and Location write ups.

Remember guys, Kenash is yours. So feel free to write up stuff and post in Locations, or NPC (not the master list but the one in the swamps) and earn some Swamp Perk points!
