"Well, then, we'll bring the dummy down for you and you can test them," the Akalak turned the crank to bring the dummy down from the rafters, ceasing when the much-abused puppet was at a proper height for the blue-skinned female to hit it.
"These ones, then?" he lifted the pair of heavy maces with flanged heads from the rack that Kanikra had pointed out, and she could only nod. They were longer than a human would normally like, but one had to accommodate the longer limbs of the Akalak somehow, and the longer handles were a perfectly adequate way to do it. He lifted the weapons from the rack.
"Cold iron," he told the Akontak, who accepted one, and then the other, her limbs sagging slightly from the weight - clearly, she hadn't expected that, but she recovered well.
"Thank you," Kanikra studied the heavy head of the weapon up close, gripping it tightly, leaving its identical twin in the grasp of her other hand. The mechanics would be very different from Raiha's suvai. The weapons could not be more dissimilar. Still, she was going to give it a good shot. As she swung the mace from below to strike at the middle of the dummy, the smith leaned on the counter and watched.
"They're a good size and weight for you, anyway. I thought they might go more to a youngster, but they might just be adequate for your purposes…" the Akontak nodded when she turned back to him.
"Now, the bows… Composite was the word you were looking for, and only the shortbow is composite. The longbow is not. They're used. They're in good shape, however. The owner needed to pay some debts, and I agreed to a trade, because they're rarely made here, but they're of good stock."Kanikra nodded, placing both maces carefully on the counter. She touched the longer length, feeling it. Perhaps a little more worn than she remembered, but it was much older, after all… and who knew how much use it had seen since she had watched him with them on Konti Isle?
"How much?" Her eyes searched the Akalak's face. She gave nothing away in terms of her emotions or what connection she may have had to the weapons.
"My price is 160 gold mizas for both bows, which includes a discount on account of their having been used. The maces are 90 gold mizas for the pair… bringing your total to 250 gold mizas, and the arrows… they're good ones, Myrian made, or so they say… for another 2 gold mizas." If he expected an argument, or haggling, he was disappointed, because Kanikra merely pulled a bag from her pack and counted them out in stacks of ten while the smith pulled the crude leather covers over the heads of the maces, pulling at the laces to tie them tight, and laid the bows with their bundles of arrows beside them on the counter.
"Thank you," Kanikra gathered her purchases, adjusting them with her gangling arms, and headed out.
