Basic Information Race: Human Gender: Male Age: 20 Birthday: Day 65, Spring of 493 AV Birthplace: Syliras Occupation(s): Appearance: : Castor is 5’ 8” and weighs 162 pounds. He is definitely not muscled, but he is in shape. He has short, black hair that is habitually either in a state of complete disarray, or else shows some small effort towards being given a semblance of order. He has a short beard, black eyes and an infectious smile. He has a scar on his right knee from falling off a tree, knee-first onto a particularly malevolent rock as a child. When he moves, it is often in quick bursts interspersed with sudden stops or turns. Character ConceptCastor has a very vibrant personality. He enjoys making people laugh, and cares about doing the right thing most of the time. To people that have just met him, Castor appears as a quirky and open kind of guy. Those who have known him for longer occasionally realize that they hardly know anything about him. In truth, Castor has difficulty opening up to people. He tends to just go with the flow and tries not to play too big of a role in anybody's life, as he doesn't want anyone to be too big a part of his. Castor is generally a person whose moral compass points due north on the big moral issues. However, he is resolute to make no changes to his desired course for anyone else, and can appear cruel if pushed too hard to choose between his thirst for knowledge and other people. Having spent most of his childhood cooped up in the windowless 20x20 apartment, it was only logical that the young boy would pass the time playing out fantastical stories through the use of his active imagination. At night, he would wait for his father to return from selling curiosities at The Great Bazaar. Lying in bed, he would be awoken by his father’s heavy footsteps as he tried – in vain – to silently navigate the room. He would demand a story as payment for having been woken up; something which usually entailed either a fictional or unbelievable, yet factual account of some interesting new item’s origin. On special occasions, Barrett would bring out from its hiding place a small, leather-bound journal. It belonged to Castor’s late grandfather, and detailed the latter’s youthful adventures, braving the Falyndaran jungle as part of a large group of journeymen. Castor’s father of course only read the young child the more light-hearted and entertaining parts of the narrative – almost entirely consisting of the group’s naïve first few days into the death-trap that is the Falyndar jungle – and in fact leaving out most of the book. Still these snippets of adventure galvanized the child’s brain towards a craving for tales of the lands beyond the walls of Syliras, as well as towards one day being a part of them. Thus, he became resolute on his 15th year to begin just such a perilous journey, travelling from city to city, all across Mizahar. In vain did his father plead and cajole him, trying to get him to see some sense and abandon such a foolhardy goal. Castor set a date and began preparations for his grand journey. All was going well and there was still little less than a month before the expected departure date, when disaster struck. After another of the heated arguments that father and son had been having over the course of that past season or so, Barrett Riley was suddenly struck dumb mid-sentence. Castor watched as his father’s face suddenly took on a frightful grimace, before his feet buckled beneath him and he fell to the floor. After a terrifying night of searching for a healer, and getting his father in a stable condition, Castor was informed that his father would no longer be able to either speak properly, or walk. This of course meant that Castor would have to put his adventurous plans on hold, something he did immediately and with little regret. He took over his father’s stall at the bazaar and took care of and supported his father as best he could. Over the following years, he was quickly forced to grow from a thoughtless youth into a mature adult. He interacted with many different people during his years working the stall and told many a tall tale to persuade a customer. One of the benefits of working a stall in the bazaar was the amount of books, albeit of relatively small value, passed through his hands. On the other hand, he could only afford to hold onto them for so long before having to sell them to recoup his expenses. Thus began his obsession with memorizing as much of a book as he could before handing it off. He was shown with gestures the location of Grandpa Riley’s journal and he spent a long time reading and rereading the book, including the parts that he had previously been unaware of. By the time his 18th Spring came around, he could recite some quotes from his favourite books by heart; he could do the same for entire passages from his grandfather’s journal. He realised how his own foolishness would have certainly led to his death, and took a more sober approach to his adventurous nature. He realized that knowledge is power, making it his life goal to travel the world gathering it and understanding it. After his father passed away, in the Winter of 512 AV, Castor found a shaky scribble across the title page of his grandfather’s journal. It was just one word, “LIVE”, but its power sent him immediately on a course of action. By Spring he had got all his affairs in order and was on his way toward his first step in his journey to Knowledge. He joined a caravan heading to Zeltiva and silently bid farewell to the city of his childhood.
