The allure of the Ghalash Swamplands that are created by the Kenash Rivers low gradient flowing through the grasslands and dumping into the Suvan Sea is unmistakable. Traders passing through on the Kabrin Road have long held their breaths during this part of the trip, crossing the long stone Kincer Bridge. The bridge, named after the famed Syliran Knight who rallied and fundraised to create it, left the traders lofted up over the murky waters, safe finally, from most of the Ghalash Swamp's dangers. But they dreamed, and some as they passed by heard its call and eventually stayed until there were thirteen names.
These names, attached to families, soon discovered that the fringelands between mud of the swamp and the clay of the grasslands made astonishing farmland. And despite the dangers, they carved out plantations and began to grow tobacco and cotton. They took slaves, bought with their first fruitful crops, and generated more revenue with larger crops. Eventually huge sprawling mansions cropped up in and around the Kabrin Road and its famous bridge across the Kenash River. As the families grew more prominent, they bought better and better slaves, some far more skilled than simple farmers. With these free workers, they opened centralized smithies, businesses catering to the trade caravans, and finally luxury spots designed to cater to each other. No one ever formally named the city of Kenash. It just came into being, like something grown from a single seed - the siren song of the swamp. Not all the families are human. Not all the families get along. The only common thread running through the thirteen families is wealth, their vast plantation empires, slaves, and the volatile nature of their enterprises.
The rest is often a bloodbath, thinly disguised as 'hospitality' for the caravans that pass through and fuel Kenash's economy. There is no law in Kenash, not in the traditional sense. There are however the hired security of the families. Most of these are assassins and spies. Who is planting what this year? Who will marry who and turn over fortunes? Which business can out complete which business and drive them to ruin?
Kenash is interested in the most debase of things dressed up in velvet and lace. Because behavior isn't everything. Appearance is.
And while their are significant dangers in their surroundings - The Drykas constantly pressing them back off the Grasslands, the wildlife of the swamp, the weather, and the influx of travelers of all sorts - the biggest danger to Kenash is Kenash itself and her people who are holding on to civility only by a thread. |
