A surreal cavern city inhabited by Symenestra where stones glow and streets are reams of silk. Cocoon like structures hang between stalactites and cascade over limestone flows in organic and eerie arabesques. Without a Symenestra willing to escort you, entrance is impossible.

NPC suggestion
__________________________________________________________________________________

So, this is my suggestion for the librarian that keeps track of The Cribellum!

Image
Name: Calvino Amaranthus
Age: 73
Race: Symenestra

Copying: 70
Writing: 55
Intelligence: 40
Observation: 40
Drawing: 30
Musical Instrument-Violin: 20

Calvino has been the all-important harvester of knowledge in The Cribellum for decades. He has dedicated his life to the accumulation, organization and preservation of facts. Looking through stories that may or may not be factual, he shrewdly compares and extracts veritable information, transcribing them into a collection of knowledge.

Reputed to be reclusive and calculating, Symenestra seeking knowledge within his domain head there knowing they will be scrutinized carefully as they browse. Calvino's books are his life, and guards them thusly. He is not a cruel miser, rather, a protective father.

The sage has been known to dabble in music and art. Occasionally, he illustrates concepts within his books. And some nights, it is possible to hear the hum of a violin's song emanating from the secluded repository.

His first name means "bald" in Italian. His last name is the first word in "amaranthus caudatus" which is a densely-packed, bright-red flower that droops downwards. It is commonly called "love-lies-a'bleeding."

Thank you for your NPC writeup, Shausha!

Is Calvino a human or a Symenestra?

If he is a human, how did he end up in Kalinor?

If he is a Symenestra, you should change his last name. Symenestra have names of plants as last names.

You should also give him fewer skills. Just list his five or six most important skills.

It’s „Symenestra“ and not „Symenestrian“.

The plural of "Symenestra" is also "Symenestra".

As for what Symenestra bind their books with, leather I assume or maybe wood. Definitely not silk.

The library is one of the biggest buildings in Kalinor. It’s impossible to tell how many books it contains though, as new ones are constantly being added and old ones get lost or are destroyed.

As for the diameter, I’m not sure. Metres and centimetres and feet and inches are something I’ve always had a problem with. :/

It’s round though, more or less.

I've added Calvino to the Wiki and attached him to the Cribellum location thread.

You did a great job with him, Shausha. :)

Kalinor Development Center

Postby Dovinya on July 29th, 2013, 10:33 pm

Greetings! I have a few suggestions for locations that still need work on them, but I figured I'd post them here to get some feed back on them first:

Image

1st Location: The Gatherer’s Respite

The Gatherer’s Respite supplies much of the produce found in the Blue Grotto, along with occasionally supplying meat from the small animals it keeps when they have outlived their usefulness. Found rather close to the surface, this cavern is one of the more well lit areas of Kalinor, and among the most well guarded due to its importance. Upon entering the cavern through its narrow entrance, one is greeted by clucks and smell of the fowl and other small creatures kept here by the cavern’s caretakers. Adorning much of the space is a series of fenced in areas, with a small pool at its center to serve as a source of water for the creatures kept there. In one such fenced in area, out of the way of the more trafficked parts of the cavern is a few tables, utilized mostly for sorting the fruits and vegetables that are brought in by gatherer’s from the surface. Across the ceiling of the cavern, opalgloams are hung in swathes of silk, though a little natural light does find its way into the cavern during the day on the surface.

Because there is little room in the cavern for a structure of reasonable size, there exists one not far from the cavern’s entrance that handles the day to day business of the place while also serving as the occasional resting spot for those whom work within the cavern and outside on the surface gathering.

NPC:

Vedorev Solanaceae
Occupation: The Gatherer’s Respite Proprietor
Age: 45

Esteemed owner of The Gatherer’s Rest, and once a gatherer himself for a short time, Vedorev prides himself on supplying the rest of Kalinor with freshly harvested produce, among other things. Those that come to him for business will always find him more than agreeable, and willing to go to great lengths to accommodate them in some form or another. For those that seek employment in the cavern though, he can seem quite exacting, as his passion for the establishment drives him to make certain that only the most capable work in the cavern and on the surface.

Skill: Organization: 51, Negotiation: 45, Leadership: 38

OOC: Due to the fact that the smaller animals are hard to come by, they are not for sale. However, if one has good timing and is persuasive they might be able to purchase one of the older animals that has outlived its usefulness before it is slaughtered for its meat.

With this location, I kind of read the section in the lore that spoke of small animals being kept in Kalinor and ran with it in the way I figured most feasible. I also wanted to emphasize how important vegetables are to the Symenestran diet with this location, as well as the protectiveness over what few small animals they've managed to keep up with.

2nd Location: The Fangs

Nestled in the fringes of Kalinor amongst several large stalactites that give the area its name, is a workshop that specializes in making armor and weapons. Though only slightly larger than a common residential building, it would be easy to recognize even if it wasn't beside its namesake stalactites because a fierce orange glow radiates from the many fist sized holes in the around the top of this roughly tear drop shaped building, providing a much needed ventilation for the forge within. As one gets close, often they hear the noises emanating from the structure before they see it, the bang of a hammer echoing from within. Sometimes one may even chance to see smoke billowing out from the structure when a weapon is being crafted, the small forge within hard at work.

The sole door to the structure is fine piece of craftsmanship, the dark oak having been banded by precious iron to reinforce its structure. This appears a just another display of their prowess for the door is nearly always to be found unlocked. When one enters, they find that the door swings open silently on greased hinges and coming within one notices immediately the ornate display at the foot of the stairs, within it held a full set of symenestran armor, accompanied by a symenestran lash.

At least one symenestra is always in the shop to accommodate customers. To purchase armor or weaponry, one simply must place an order, and wait the necessary days it takes to made.

OOC= Due to the rarity of metals in Kalinor, the workshop runs out of supplies to make weapons frequently. Check the calendar for information on when the last traders arrived before requesting a weapon to be fashioned.

NPC’s

Hovanir Drosera
Occupation: Hunter
Age: 25

Responsible for supplying much of the hard carapaces that go into making Symenestran armor, Hovanir is found rarely in the shop, mostly spending his time between being out hunting for the giant insects that roam in the caverns below and his own home. Occasionally when he does stick around the shop, its to help Zelimon with the crafting process, or to check on the orders that need to be fulfilled.

Skill: Hunting: 40, Trapping: 34, Shortsword: 40

Zelimon Bryastrum
Occupation: Smith
Age: 30

While rather outlandish in appearance, anyone whom knows Zelimon for who he is shows he a good degree of deference for his skill at smithing, as well as his reputation as a harvester. Having spent several years upon the surface certainly left him with an odd taste in clothing amongst other things, but the skill and surrogates he brought back from his travels certainly made up for his odd nature. It is rumored that he prefers the surface cities to Kalinor, and that he has a human wife waiting for him on the surface.

Skill: Armor smithing: 35, Weapon Smithing: 26, Blacksmithing: 30

With this one, I kind of just wanted to make a place where armor would officially be made along with the occasional weapon when metal was available for it. I also acted on the assumption that smith's are a rare sight in Kalinor.

I look forward to feedback on these two locations so I might be able to fix them up to be more realistically a part of Kalinor. Thank you for your time!

Sincerely,
Dovinya

Dovinya, could you please repost your location writeups without using the ooc code? I find it almost impossible to read them the way they are now.

Once you have reposted them, I will comment on them. I really appreciate new locations for Kalinor. :)

My apologies for the format, I wasn't really thinking of how hard the OOC made long things to read as I should. It has been changed now, and I look forward to your input!

Thank you. It’s much easier to read now!

I’ve taken a look at your writeups, and it’s definitely a good start.

I don’t have any issues with the „Gatherer Respite“. In fact I quite like the location. Where do the creatures that are kept in the Gatherer’s Respite initially come from though? And how big is the cavern?

Since Sosicly is working on a mine for Kalinor, a forge make sense. I would like you to describe what the building looks like though. Does it look like the residential buildings (pear shaped, hanging from the ceiling, no windows, door in the roof)? Or is it different from them?

Pictures would also be great!

Maybe a Tannery. That'd be cool. I can work on that if you'd like and have it posted here a bit later on, brain is a bit fried right now. Also thought maybe a bathhouse , the center of which is a giant pool fed by a stalagtie dripping hot spring water. Before I invest too much thought, let me know what you think.

Kalinor already has the Blue Grotto and the Rose Cavern where the Symenestra can go swimming. It doesn't need a bath house on top of it.

A tannery makes sense though. The hunters from the Sickle and Arrow could use a place where they can take the animal skins and produce leather.

It would have to be on the small side though. Kalinor has less than 1.000 inhabitants, so I don't want to have too many different businesses in it.
