A surreal cavern city inhabited by Symenestra where stones glow and streets are reams of silk. Cocoon like structures hang between stalactites and cascade over limestone flows in organic and eerie arabesques. Without a Symenestra willing to escort you, entrance is impossible.

Bat's Head Tannery

Image

Bat's head was constructed in 239 AV to accommodate Kalinor's need for leather goods. Hunters with pelts desired armor that was light weight and still durable, but lacked the skills needed to tan the Rawhides themselves. The Dicentra Web, all of whom had acquired tanning skills during their time spent in the Sea of Grass, rose to fulfill the hunter's needs, offering skinning, tanning, and leatherworking services without having to travel beyond Kalinor.

Bat's head is located near The Sickle and Arrow on the outskirts of Kalinor. The building itself is a deep brown color, stained by the moisture produced during tanning, and pear shapped. The three rooms within are separated by walls of large stag hides with doorways conceiled by silk curtains to allow entry. The first room is where the customers are served, often times requesting to buy good, requesting tanning services, or requesting leatherworking service.

The shop itself has been tended by the Dicentra Web for nearly three centuries. Though most of the family has left the trade, a few remain to tend the modest Tannery and continue to provide Kalinor with a much needed service.

Most products available for purchase are made from Rawhide acquired by local armature hunters who sell their wares at the bat's head cheap, and are not as high quality as something a master hunter would bring in to tan. Though many colors of leather are available, to attain a higher quality one would have to bring in high quality rawhide to be tanned and worked.

Apologies for the delay in response, I've updated the locations with images as well as putting more work into the description for The Fangs. As for your questions, I was thinking that the Gather's small animals have be procured quite slowly over the past hundred years from the rare traders, and symenestra that managed to bring one. As such I intuited that for the reason that they are so protective over what little stock they have. The cavern itself is not that large, about one and a half times bigger than the Rose cavern. Its also near an entrance to the surface that is incredibly steep, but no trouble for a symenestra. The gatherer's use it to gain quick access to the surface to forage for wild vegetables, which are first and foremost the primary products of this location.

Also I hope my pictures are fine, I looked at other locations in Kalinor to see what their subject matter typically centered around and thus picked out those particular images since I couldn't find an underground building area that quite suited what I was looking for. Let me know what you think, and thanks Poison for your work with Kalinor!

Sincerely,
Dovinya

Dovinya, I think your locations are ready to be posted. If you don’t mind, I will do it and use my location template, but I will of course credit both locations to you. :)

Viridae, I have a few more questions about your location: You mention that the shop has been tended by the Servina Web for nearly three centuries, but the NPCs you’ve posted belong to the Dicentra Web. Why is this the case?

Where did you get the prices from? Did you already take a look at the price list?

I don’t think the Bat’s Head should be selling differently colored leather. Various shades of brown are sufficient. Kalinor mainly produces silk, not leather, so the Bat’s Head would essentially be an „extension“ of the Sickle and Arrow where the hunters can take the animals they have killed.

I think the prices for your tanning services are a little too high considering that a set of leather armour is only 10 gm according to the price list. I suggest only using armor pieces that are on the price list for your writeup for now and generally using the prices you find there as a guideline.

As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, there are no dire animals above Kalinor. You could theoretically transport a dead dire animal all the way to Kalinor, but it would probably be rotten and not useable anymore by then.

I also find it unrealistic that Venidict is already a master leatherworker at 19. I wouldn’t give him more points in leatherworking than his father.

I can adjust the prices, no problem :D The change in family is simple an editing mistake I made it would seem. Dicentra seemed like a more traditional Symenestra name, but I most likely forgot to change it in the description. Later on tonight I can go back and make the required changes. As for the dire thing, I made this post before we figured that out, haha. but does the general idea of the system itself make sense? Tanning and leatherworking being separate and all? And do you think I should make Items other than armors available, such as rugs and clothing?

The system itself makes sense, yes. :)

You shouldn't make any items other than simple leather armor available though. As I've mentioned the Bat's Cave will necessarily be a small business. And the Symenestra usually wear clothes made of silk and their exoskeleton armor. They don't have any need for clothing made of other materials.

I also just saw that you have boots on your list. While Symenestra might occasionally wear something made of leather when the situation requires it, they almost never wear shoes or boots. They hinder them when they are climbing.

The boot thing was actually a very difficult decision for me, and the reason I opted to include them was to cater to the fact that many hunts take place in the mountains, and may require boots to protect feet, but if you don't think this is necessary I can remove them

Okay, I've revised the item list and switched some things around (My memory is awful, I've already forgotten what I changed, but I think I made all the important corrections) And even made the armor into full setts, with higher quality leather and more components costing a bit more cash. I cross referenced the price of leather armor per pound on the price list with the actual weight of armor of that age, and threw clothing in there, although I'm not sure if that was a wise decision. I figured perhaps non Sym PC's might purchase something like that. I've also adjusted the skills of the NPCs, but kept Venidict's leather working higher than his tanning for the simply reason that I sort of wanted it to seem like he took to leatherworking more than he took to tanning. I also lowered their hunting skills in order to ensure people know that the reason they tan is because they aren't the best hunters. If ya need anything else, let me know ^.^ as sort of an afterthought, I thought maybe I should mention that the leatherworking of separate pieces of armor is a little weird, so if you'd like me to change that to complete sets with difrent quality of leather, such as with the items available for purchase I can do that

Viridae, I haven't forgotten about you. I wasn't sure about some things you wrote in your location writeup, so I decided to check with another moderator.

I will comment on your new version as soon as I have a reply.

Your NPCs look much better now. :)

As I already told you, Viridae, the NPCs look much better now. :)

As for the items available for purchase, I couldn’t find any medium leather armor on the Mizahar price list.

The only kind of medium armor that is available for purchase is Hide armor, and that costs 15 gm. Could you change that, please?

There is also no heavy/thick armor made of leather. You could however offer studded leather armor for 25 gm.

As for the tanning services, I think this will be enough:

Small game: 5 sm
Medium game: 20 sm
Big game: 1 gm

As for the leatherworking services, again, you shouldn’t sell anything that’s not on the Mizahar price list. I would suggest that you just offer people a 50% discount if they bring the necessary leather. So a set of leather armor would cost 5 gm instead of 10.
