Edge of Independence (Schon)

17th day of Spring, 513 AV

The odd creature drifted through the halls, as much in fear as excitement. Somewhere in his core he knew his master was not far away, somehow watching. He was still able to communicate, to feel his master's anticipation, but still out of sight. And if Ender could not see him, then he could not see Ender. Yet it was not his goal to find locate his master, but for the trainee wizard to stand on his own for the first time. For too long he had been satisfied to sit holstered, unable to do anything. This was his chance to make his own excitement, but it was also a risky move. For in this time he was vulnerable, and could very well cost the duo everything. In the halls alone, this was not a place of comfort, but luckily this area was familiar to him, etched into his visual memory.

"I know what you are getting at with this, but be warned, I am not afraid to act radically. I am capable of handling everything, and indeed causing trouble for you, as you have for me so many times in the past." The Irylid floated onward his sluggish walking pace hovering that allowed him to absorb every single detail around him. Not far from here was the Great Library, and in it he would find automaton and sentient life both. This was plenty enough trial and testing ground, unlike the suggested Testing Grounds. Such a place was barren of sentience, only filled with dangerous pitfalls and creatures. Not a pleasant experience without a powerful escort, and even with, things could get heated. But in this time, no matter how much he taunted or plead with his master, no answer was ever received.

But every few chimes, Ender could swear to catching a glimpse of grey eyes and a face cloaked behind the Mask of Many peering around a corner. But, one could never be sure, for the dark halls hid many secrets. And finally the Familiar had come to find his destination, so proud of his independence. Though now, in this time of triumph, he was met with his greatest challenge yet. He had no hands to open the doors of the Great Library.
