Near the mouth of the Bay, before the gentle waters reach the more treacherous of the Outer Oceans, there lies an interconnecting series of caves in the rock, formed by years of the water lapping against the shore. The caves can only be reached by boat, or by the very skilled abseiling down the rocks to the entrance. The entrance to the caves is small, nearly unnoticeable, tucked away behind two outreaching rocks at the entrance. However, those who approach the area are all too aware that there lies something beneath the rock... the Caves seem to speak to the wind, echoing hollowly and eerily. For this reason, the locals of Thunder Bay have called this cave system 'The Wailing Caves'.
The Caves stretch far back into the rock, spreading out in a tangling web system in strange and complex patterns. Some theorise that on the very other side of the Thunder Bay settlement, perhaps the Caves open out there, but the exit has not been found. Whatever the case, the Caves are extremely difficult to traverse. Finding and entering the Caves is the easy part. Once inside, the Caves turn into a warren, filled with dead ends and pitfalls, some of the caves and passages filled with salty water from the Bay. The amount of light in the caves soon cuts off, the further underground you go.
No creatures live here, save the typical bats that are found nesting on the roofs of the cavern, and some of the blind, slimy fish in the deep waters of the caves. The fish are large and meaty, and would provide a great deal of sustenance for the people of Thunder Bay as they are slow moving and unused to predators, but very few venture deep into the caves, for fear of getting lost.
Some say that in the Caves, there lie precious minerals and jewels embedded in the rock, and some brave Inarta try to traverse the systems. Surely if one could locate the minerals safely, then the reward would be worth it, but none have done so thus far. With the renewed trade system, perhaps a driving need for tradable items will push some Inarta to go looking for the precious stones...
Mod note: This is an RP location and does not require moderation, unless attempting to find the minerals. |
