Basics Race: Kelvic - Griffon vulture
Gender: Male
Age: 17
Birthday: 5th of Spring, 498
Birthplace: Ahnatep
Appearance Vulture Fenris is a most handsome bird as far as his species is concerned. He weighs a solid twenty pounds and stands nearly four feet high with an almost nine foot wingspan. A weak beak is long and broad, ending in a slight curve with a faint chip at the tip. His coloring is typical, a white head and neck of down with a small rough of quill. The rest of his great body consists of tawny feathers with black primary and secondary feathers. Well insulated legs merge from sandy brown to a pale grey, ending in charcoal feet. His talons are curved and his tail is blunt and rounded. A thin band of gold surround black eyes, which are sharp and assessing and rimmed with dark skin to deflect sunlight.
Human Fenris' human form is considerably less handsome and begrudgingly average. He bears the appearance of a man in his late twenties or early thirties, standing about six feet tall. His figure is most often described as dusty with tawny gold skin and sandy hair, often in disarray. He rarely has the consideration to cut his tresses and as such the ends often brush his collar or shoulders. When tamed he might pass for decent. Narrow lips are quick to quirk a grin, revealing nearly white teeth. His top left molar is just slightly chipped.
Straight eyebrows sit on a well formed brow ridge over amber eyes. Dark pupils appear keenly round and larger than a human's might. They have also been described as beady, though Fenris takes offense to the negative connotation this illustration implies. His nose is somewhat shorter than it should be and rounded (likely indicative of a poor sense of smell), the flesh below his nostrils extending an extra few centimeters. He is well muscled though not overly so, maintaining an athletic form. Per his avian half his bone structure is strong, a smooth jawline often speckled with blond stubble. His hands are strong and his stride even.
PersonalityFenris lives life freely and is an all round decent fellow, as both a man and a vulture. Generally social and good-natured he's good for a laugh. He takes most things in stride, often the one to ease a tense moment with a joke. Despite a penchant for dead things Fenris is fairly gregarious and likes the company of others. He accepts his faults and doesn't look to judge others.
While not one to actively seek assisting others, Fenris has been known to go out of his way when the situation arises to help another. He prides himself on being able to get along with just about anyone. He has an easy manner about him and doesn't mind sharing his meal (or his bed). Though not bonded, the Kelvic is in no rush as he's not even middle aged yet. He harbors a desire for adventure and often spends idle time catching thermals and surveying the land leisurely.
His vision is exceptional and he is highly observational of his environment. He can detect the smallest muscle twitch across the room and find a three foot carcass from miles away. Smell, on the other wing, is poor for him, which is probably good considering his profession. The reek of dessication and rot hardly phases him though it doesn't lend itself to complementing a freshly cooked meal. His sense of taste is not terribly advanced but he makes do. As one might guess Fenris isn't exactly a picky eater though he often consumes more food than expected for his size, both avian and human.
Fenris rarely provokes confrontation but he's not one to flee either. As a vulture he has been known to projectile vomit upon the unfortunate aggressor, the partially digested food laced with stomach acids and putrid flesh. As a human he often resorts to a projectile vomit of oaths and foul curses, enough to make a sailor blush. These occasions are rare, however, the Kelvic opting toward a friendlier nature unless pushed to ire.
Some have described him as a lovable oaf, which he embraces happily. He slow to anger and maintains an easy lifestyle. Were one to inquire after his hopes and dreams, Fenris might delight them with his desire for finding a bond mate, learning to read and the (secret) wish to learn the culinary arts. But to any general being the Kelvic has an all around relaxed manner. His words are rarely rushed, a casual accent clipping the ends of words as if he's just too laid-back to finish. Fenris doesn't have many he calls confidants and keeps it this way intentionally. A wanderer by trade it doesn't suit to accrue a retinue of friends.
Fenris cannot write very well nor can he perform much in the way of arithmetic. He can read remedially with great effort.
HistoryBorn of a jackal mother and a tiger father Fenris was raised a predator. Unfortunately his animal nature inclined him more toward a scavenger, his interests in rooting around for already dead things more obnoxious than endearing to his poor parents. Where his father was fierce and his mother territorial, he was laid back and amicable. It didn't bother him terribly that they felt a sense of disappointment. A vulture is a vulture.
A few months after his birth the nomadic family moved from Ahnatep and eventually ouf of Eyktol. Passing through Cyphrus, Fenris' parents grew weary of their son's inability to hunt or kill. The boy didn't obtain a surname until his third year of life when his mother sent him away to live with a turkey vulture Kelvic while they continued their travels. Their carrion-consuming son had become increasingly difficult to manage not only because he preferred dead things but for his mellow nature. He had no interest in duels with the other predator Kelvic children and was often found lazing around staring at the sky. Neither parent could understand his desire to simply fly the open range and muse to himself. Any attempt at aggression or lesson in hunting was turned into a joke or an opportunity to nap until food was fetched. Not that he was lazy, but his parents' goals simply didn't fit his personality.
At her wits' end and somewhat concerned for the boy's health, Fenris' mother sent him to an elderly Kelvic roosting near the border of Riverfall, whom they'd met by happenstance. The turkey vulture, who simply went by Ser, managed to raise the boy without disappointment - which suited his parents. His mother and father moved on, threatened by the dangerous lifestyle pervading the Sea of Grass. Fenris was comfortable with Ser, having maintained only a small attachment to his parents. The two lived a quiet life in that nest, mostly ignoring each other until Ser had a lesson to teach. The aging Kelvic taught Fenris all he needed to know regarding the arts of tending to the dead. Aside from eating the deceased, he learned to take care of remains and properly dispose of them, as well as understanding the physiology of desiccation.
At the ripe age of 42 Ser passed on quietly, much to Fenris sorrow. Feeling homeless and listless, the Kelvic spent the rest of his years wandering, taking work as a grave digger when and where he could. Despite a vulture's need to stay home-bound, Fenris has yet to call any place home. A vagabond for most of his life, he's traveled from Cyphrus to Sylira, across the Suvan to Kalea with a brief stint in Taldera (though he's not overly fond of the cold).
