"What's wrong, dear? Come on right in." Atta greeted her most unusual employee, the ghost child Kouri. She saw Kouri standing just outside her store, silently and unmoving. Atta saw that something was not right with the girl. I bet it's because of the spider lilies... Just yesterday, Atta tasked Kouri to gather fifty stalks of Spider Lilies; she didn't know that the flower held painful memories for the girl. It was her mother's favorite flowers and it reminded Kouri of her mother.
She didn't came back yesterday... Kouri usually came back at late afternoon or night from her usual flower gathering. but she didn't came back until closing time yesterday night. In the next morning, Atta found a basket... filled to the brim with Spider Lilies; more than the fifty stalks she ordered. Atta also found a note written by the Kouri stating she was sorry and would not return late again, Atta knew something happened; but Kouri was not willing to talk about it.
"*Sigh*... dear, I can't talk to you properly if you keep standing out there..." Atta sighed, the moody nature of the ghost child frustrated her sometimes; but being the wise woman she is, she knew that you can't really comprehend a ghost's mind with rationality.
"I'm sorry..." Finally a whisper escaped Kouri's lips. She turned around and entered the store, her gaze to the ground and her face was filled with remorse. "What do you need today, Madame?"
"It's quite alright, dear. Hmmm... today you can help me arranging these red and white roses. I need you to make five basic arrangements, just put the roses together to form a dome-shape then I will take care of the decorations... I don't mean to underestimate you, child but this is your first time doing it and arranging complex patterns requires skill." Atta described the task as clearly as possible. Kouri, of course, was more than willing to accept it. "And be proud dear, these roses are the ones you gathered a few days ago..."
"W-wha? R-really?! Ehehehehe~ Yay! Hehehe~" Kouri's mood suddenly changed for the better. She felt proud that Atta used the flowers she gathered, she felt her existence was meaningful to other people; not just a phantom that deserved to feared and scorned.
"Hahaha, it's good to see you're enthusiastic about it, dear... now then... for your first try, I will show you how." Atta prepared two clay vases, she put them next to each other on her flower arranging table. "Please take a spot there, dear..."
"Okay okay~♪" Kouri happily floated next to Atta, ready to learn from her employer. |

"Now, just follow what I do, first... you pick a red rose..." Atta began to teach Kouri on how to make a simple flower arrangement first. "Then you put it like... so." Atta neatly placed the first flower at the side of the vase with just the right angle and position. "Try it, dear. In the meanwhile, I shall continue with mine..."
"Aaaah... uuuum... umu... o-okay..." Kouri was intimidated by Atta's expertise and finesse, she must has been doing this for the most part of her life. Kouri materialized herself and jutted out a tendril from her back, then she wrapped the tendril around her right hand; it was to mimic a normal human's method of grabbing objects. "..." She picked up a red rose and tried her best to imitate Atta's rose.
"Auuuu... eeeh... aaaah...." After five chimes of struggling, she finally put it. Yay! I did it! She smiled at her magnificent work. A single red rose was neatly placed in the vase, she turned her head to the side and... her image of her 'magnificent work' shattered to pieces. It utterly paled in comparison to Atta's beautiful arrangement, she was about a quarter-way done already. Elegant red roses neatly placed together to create a true work of art and it wasn't even done yet!
"....." Kouri puffed out her cheeks in jealousy. I won't give up!! With fierce determination in her mind, Kouri continued to work on her arrangement.
One bell later...
"I'm done, dear. What about yo-... hahaha..." Atta couldn't help but chuckle when she saw the ghost girl still struggling with her flowers. She was about halfway done, but the quality of her work was rather... inferior compared to Atta. It was no surprise for Atta though, it was Kouri's first time in arranging flowers after all; and flower arrangement is a difficult art that take years to truly master.
"Hauuumpppphhh!! Aaaaah!! Eeeeeh.... giiiiih!" Kouri groaned and moaned in annoyance. Her black-tendril wrapped hand struggling to place the roses without it shifting the other roses' location. "Uweeeeeh!!!" Her hair billowed up and down as if it was sentient and knew how its owner felt.
"Do you want me to help, dear?" Atta sincerely asked, Kouri's struggling was rather cute to watch but she couldn't help but felt pity for the girl.
"No, Madame! I can do this! I will not give up!" She politely refused and continued on her own. Don't you dare pity me, Madame! Hmph!
Thirty chimes later...
"Doooone! I'm done! Yay yay!!" Kouri put up her hands and jumped up and down. It was finished... this bloody arrangement was finally finished! She had produced an arrangement of red and white roses with rather mediocre quality... Kouri compared hers to Atta's and to no surprise, Atta's arrangement was far better than her. It's like comparing an ordinary iron dagger to a gem-encrusted gold dagger. "Eeeeh... oh well.. it's something, right?"
"Ahaha, of course, dear. Congratulations on your first arrangement... now, you got four more to go." Atta patted Kouri's shoulder to give encouragement. Her body was cold... cold like ice, but Atta was quite used to it now.
"Ehehe... ehehehe~ Thank you, Madame~" Kouri relished in Atta's warm touch. "Alright! Four more to go!" Her hand then picked up another red rose... |

I will make it better this time! She flexed her ethereal hand muscles and her tendril slithered across her hand in response. "Alright!" She put the first red rose inside the vase perfectly. The first step is always easy... As the roses rise in numbers, it got steadily harder to keep them from shifting away with each new rose placed. Kouri took another rose and placed it next to the previous rose. "...." Her brows furrowed in deep concentration.
Atta watched in interest as the ghost girl slowly got the hang of it. It was a basic arrangement, but she had talent at using that... snake-like tendril slithering across her right arm and hand.
Forty Five Chimes later...
"Huff... heeeh..." Kouri was halfway done now, the red rose half of the arrangement was finished. While still cannot be compared to Atta's, it was definitely better than her first one. There's still much room for improvement though.
"Dear, you can rest if you're tired." Atta was rather concerned, she didn't want Kouri to hurt herself in exhaustion. The tendril on her hand spun around and repositioned itself as Kouri turned to face her.
"Don't worry, Madame! I'll get them finished today! I promise!" Kouri was determined to see this through the end. Her pride would not let itself be defeated by some roses. She huffed and picked up a white rose and began arranging the white rose half. "La~ La~ La La~ Laaa La La~♪" She began humming a song to offset her growing exhaustion.
Four Bells later...
"Dear, it's already sundown... that's enough for today... dear? Where are you?" Atta came to check on Kouri, who was nowhere to be seen inside the shop. "Where are y-... oooh..." Her old eyes were greeted by five neatly placed red and white rose arrangements. "Oh my.. she actually did it..." She approached closer to examine them. The arrangements quality was steadily increasing since from the first attempt to the next. "Now, where is that girl?" Atta looked around to locate Kouri, but her eyes stopped at a peculiar note placed beside one of the arrangements.
She picked it up and read it. "Ahaha, you poor girl..." The note was written by Kouri and mentioned that she was too tired to maintain her form and asked her permission to rest in the Flower Stand today. "I see... so you are here after all." Atta's eyes locked itself to a particular corner of her shop, she saw some kind of swirling black mist. "Good night, dear..."
That day, if one thing that Kouri definitely learned was that arranging flowers is harder than wielding a dagger. It's easier to destroy than to construct, Kouri knew that now. |
