Spring the 45th year 513 AV, Stories in the Snow

The smell of paper and ink fills Lorelle's nose as she opens the door and enters the Library. The building has always been a place where the Vantha has felt very at home. She loves the books and the stories they tell. Reading makes her feel as though she is apart of another world. One far away from the snowy world of Avanthal that she lives in. While she loves her home land, it is always nice to let her world slip into another world and imagine and different life.

Today Elle has come to the library to find herself a job. She has known that she needs to get herself one for awhile now. She has just been lazy about going about it. She has decided upon coming to the Library to get a job as it is one of the few places she can spend mass amounts of time in and not get bored. She just hopes that she will be able to actually be able to get this job.

The Vantha's silverish purple eyes look around the room of books. Her eyes settle upon the desk not far from where she stands now. She walks over to the desk and looks at the person behind it.
"Hello," she greets, "I am Lorelle Snowsong and I am interested in a position here."

A Day Among Stories [Noblesse]

It was a very slow day at the Stories in the Snow. Jack swore he can easily count the number of people who came to the library with only one hand. He sighed. At least he can focus on matters of more import, such as making new copies of the older books in their inventory. He only wished he could get more help with managing the accounts of loaned books and assisting library-goers in locating volumes they seek. Work can easily pile up especially on busier days.

Dipping his quill in black ink, he was about to run it along the surface of a clean sheet of paper when the door opened and a young woman entered the library and stood there, casually running her eyes around the large room. Jack looked up from his work and stared at the woman quietly. The woman walked closer and introduced herself, and she definitely wasted no time in stating the business of her visit.

“A Snowsong looking for work in the library?” Jack Skyglow asked more to himself rather than to the newcomer. There was no derision in his tone, and his face remained devoid of any emotion.

After a few moments, he shrugged. “If you want to work here you’ll have to talk to Felix.” He stood from his seat and motioned for Lorelle to follow him. He led her past rows upon rows of bookshelves, his strides long and quick. Finally, the two reached a smaller room, an office by its layout.

“Hey Felix,” At this, an old white-haired man seated at the desk at the corner of the room raised his head from the documents he was reading. Jack continued, “Someone’s here looking for work.” He ushered Lorelle further inside the room and, after giving a cordial nod to the older man, closed the door behind him.

Felix beckoned at Lorelle to sit down on the chair across him. Fixing his glasses on his face, he looked her up and down narrowly. “Jack says you’re looking for a job here, young lady?” He leaned forward, his face breaking into a kind smile. “What is your name, child?”

OOCI apologize for being able to reply only now! I'm really sorry for the inconvenience it brought you. :(

Lorelle looked upon the young man in front of her. She couldn't detect any emotion with his question. In fact it seemed as though he wasn't talking to her at all, but asking himself the question as if he had never taken the thought into consideration. That he didn't think such a thing would interest a Snowsong. Lorelle almost rolls her eyes upon hearing his words, but forces herself not to. She doesn't want to make a bad first impression and ruin her chance of meeting with the one in charge. She simply nods her head and by the time she has he has already moved on and said something else and was standing up.

Without saying anything, Lorelle followed Jack back to Felix's office. On the way there, she keeps herself looking calm with gentle movements and steady breathing. Inside however she feels the flutter of butterflies in her stomach and the nerves building up making it hard to look neutral on the outside. She doesn't fully understand why she is so nervous, it isn't like she is going to talk to the goddess Morwen herself. Inside though she knows she is nervous because she actually wants this and she doesn't want to mess up. Such pressure on one's self can make one nervous. Lorelle knows this, but her mind wants to make up a hundred different reasons as if that helps in anyway.

Before she knows it, Jack has led her all the way to the office and she is standing in front of the old man that he called Felix. She gives a light smile before sitting in the seat she is instructed to. She nods her head at his question.
"Lorelle Snowsong," she answers with a gentle smile on her lips, "And yes, I am interested in a job here."

Upon hearing her reply, Felix Naturdan, Chief Librarian of Avanthal’s only library, nodded his head quietly, sagaciously.

It was the first time a Snowsong had conveyed interest in applying for a job within the library. Often, it would be the younger Skyglows looking for easier ways to earn money and putting into use the set of skills learned from the Hold. Not many of them lasts for long after finding out that work in the library is not as easy as it would seem.

“I see. What kind of work did you have in mind then? We have a quite an array of work here with some variety of skills needed for them. Most of the work here involves mending damaged items and copying older volumes into new books.”

He doubted that Lorelle had the proper skills to accomplish the jobs he and Jack were tasked to do everyday. The people of Avanthal were mostly expected to stick to the things their ancestors had paved for them, so the young Snowsong’s application had come in much to a surprise to the old man.

“If you don’t think you’re ready to do those jobs I mentioned yet, we can always have another clerk around. It’s an under appreciated vocation but, in my opinion, just as important as tending to the books.

“Working here, you’ll be assisting people locate the books they need within the library. Monitoring what’re borrowed and what are returned are only the tip of the iceberg. You’ll also be tasked to returning books to their specific shelves as well as organizing these materials.”

His tone had gone from light to serious somewhere in the midst of his bit of monologue. Felix is a friendly and welcoming man, but when it comes to books he can’t afford to take any chances.

“And you’re expected to always be diligent in your work. A lot of people had gone from working here after realizing they can’t fool around just because this is a quiet place. I don’t like slackers.”

Felix watched the young woman’s expression behind his glasses. “Are you still up for the job, Lorelle?”

Lorelle listened to Felix's words with a calm expression on her face. She came into knowing that she doesn't have the skills for creating new books or mending old ones. She just was never taught stuff like that. She was taught music and stories. That is one of the reasons she is here and wants to work her, to learn not only about organizing and handling the books but also about the other parts of what is done here. Not right away but in do time.

She payed attention to the clerk position the most, knowing that is what she would be able to do. Every word was heard clearly and she nodded when he ended with his question.
"Yes I am," she answered, "I see myself as able to take on a clerk position as I do not yet possess the skills for copying and mending books." She paused for a minute to think before continuing on with anything.

"I don't want to blow my own flute, but I am pretty diligent and I don't take work lightly," she says in a seriously calm voice, "I would expect nothing less than to be told I am no longer welcome to this job if I didn't preform what is expect of me to at least average proficiency."

Felix listened silently, Lorelle's voice the only sound within the small room, as she talked about her good qualities.

Since the library was short on staff, the old man did not see any reason to turn the young lady down. He knew they needed all the hands they can get, and Lorelle seemed very interested in the position. However, words are just words, and only time will tell if she was indeed worthy of a job at the Snows and Stories. "Then I will hold you to your word, Lorelle Snowsong." Finally, Felix broke into a small smile.

"Well then, consider yourself hired. I expect to see you here tomorrow morning, nice and early. Eight bell at the latest." He paused, thinking. "I'm usually just in this office if you need anything from me, but since I'm mostly busy I'd prefer you direct most of your questions to Jack, the young man who escorted you here just earlier. Talk to him as soon as you come here, he will instruct you as to what you need to do."

With a small nod and a dismissive wave of the hand, Felix Naturdan returned to the documents on his table that waited his utmost attention. It was a gesture that says Lorelle was free to leave. "Too many things to do, so little the time..."

Lorelle Snowsong :
Experience:
  • Rhetoric +1
  • Observation +3

Lores:
  • Looking for Employment at the Library
  • Feeling the Jitters

Notes:
For a short thread that was just about getting a job, this was a fun one! I enjoyed seeing how Lorelle tried to hold herself back from making a retort at Jack, as well as making a good impression on Felix. Lorelle seemed to be the diligent type too, so I'm excited to see how she fares at work in future threads.

Anyway... congratulations on the new job! Lorelle is now employed as a clerk at Snows and Stories. You will receive a PM some time after this post.

True nobility lies in being superior to your former self
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your grade, please send me a PM and we can figure it out. Heehee.
