Why, I'm Me, You See!

Meville is the product of a wizard consumed by his thirst for

power and a woman with a gentle heart and a broken mind.

Though often bright and cheery on the surface, Meville struggles

with the demons passed down to him from his parents. A practicing mage in his own right,

Meville tends to use his projection for mundane tasks rather than serious training (though, should

the need arise, he could defend himself with it). And, of course, whether jocular or malicious,

Meville enjoys mischief and mayhem as much as any questionably sane individual.

My Past Behind Me,

Meville was born and raised in the city of Avanthal, though his lack of a Vantha heritage and his father’s complete lack of interest in finding a place among the Holds meant home was the Savintar Warrens. He grew up around the coming and going of those who visited the great, wintery city, so tales of places far beyond the icy walls of his home were common to his ear though never did they lose their intrigue. In truth, the travelers were more of a family to the young boy than his parents.

ImageTomas, Meville's father, had at one time been a wizard of some power. Lusting for more, but unwilling learn along the natural course of time, Tomas sought the added strength of the power of leeching. The power was never enough, and Tomas quickly found himself weakening at the cost of what he had hoped would give him strength. Disheartened, the drive that had once pushed him to seek out power was replaced by his own fear of death. He retreated to Avanthal, resigning himself only to solitary magical research. He took with him his wife, Alira, who followed him without thought. There in Avanthal, Meville was born a few years after their arrival. Alira had always been weak of mind, and the pain of childbirth finally ended, so too did her sanity. It was not a complete break, rather she became extremely docile, almost child-like. She coo'ed along with her child, giggling and drooling as did he when she was allowed to hold him. For the most part, Meville was raised by his father who found taking care of both wife and son bothersome, but bearable.

When Meville was old enough, he helped his father with his research, mainly in the form of fetching food or drink to bring back, or cleaning up after his mother. It was around the time Meville turned fifteen that his father decided to teach the growing boy the art of magic. First, he taught Meville projection. Using his astral form to affect the world around him was not only exciting, but an experience to bond with the cold figure Meville had had as a father. He embraced the experience and tried hard to please him. As a reward for his efforts, Tomas tattooed glyphs onto Mevill so he could more easily conduct his magic. Though painful, it is one of the very few things his father left him that Meville truly appreciates.

As time passed, his mother's condition worsened, and with each new incident did Tomas' ability to keep a level head and clear mind diminish. Alira passed in the night, quietly, when Meville was eighteen. He had sat with her as the light flickered from her eyes, and it was then he discovered her journal. Tucking it away with his few possessions, Meville kept it as a reminder of his lost mother.Image

After the death of Alira, Tomas threw himself into his research. For days, he would nothing but scribble in his ledger. Often times, he would fail to eat the food Meville would return with, mumbling about "balance" this and "draining" that. Eventually, Tomas put down his quill and told Meville they would be going on a short trip outside the city. There, Tomas drained the Djed from his son, initiating him into the art of leeching. An unpleasant experience to say in the least, they returned back to their home. There, Tomas forced Meville to increase his leeching abilities in the privacy of their home.

A short while after Meville's twentieth birthday, his father died leaving behind a small pouch of GMs and a book filled with nonsense. He had been just as insane as his wife, only he had hidden it much better.

Meville must now find how to support himself on his own. He is not completely inept, but never having to had to work before, he finds himself uncertain as to his future.

A Closer Look

Image

General Information :
1. What is your Name?
My name is Meville Brightshade! Pleased to make your acquaintance!
2. Do you go by a nickname or pet name?
People seem to find my name more pleasing when it's just "Mev", easier to say, I guess?
3. How old are you?
I'm currently the grand age of twenty years!
4. What is your height?
I stand at six feet exactly. None of those extra inches, you know?
5. What is your weight?
Isn't that a bit personal? I'm one hundred fifty-five pounds if you're dying to know.]

Aesthetics :
1. Describe yourself as you see yourself.
Well, looking in the mirror, I'd say a fairly handsome fellow grins back. I don't mean to be vain, it's just what it is. I'm fairly tall, though in no way am I a giant of any sort - neither height, width, nor personality. Well, let's see... I like to have fun. Innocent all the way to malicious, you name something that went wrong you can't explain? I probably had something to do with it. I wouldn't say I'm an evil person - maybe I'm more prone to chaos than the next fellow -, but I certainly have no love of "justice". It's all a conspiracy, you know: the whole social construct of good and evil. What else, what else? Oh! You should know I'm weak! But with weakness, I have learned to get my revenge in other, more subtle ways than straight confrontation. I suppose that's enough for you for now. I wouldn't want to go spilling the beans on everything, now would I?
2. Describe yourself as others typically see you.
Ah, different story here. To some, I am a menace - and I use the term most endearingly, which they would certainly not! To others, I am more of a nuisance with many uses, which make up for what I tend to dirty my hands with. Most find my looks attractive, but my personality often keeps those with romantic inclinations at bay. This, I will have you know, is not my doing! I don't mean to be so... Me. Often, that's how someone will describe me: "Oh, Meville? He's certainly... Meville." It doesn't really bother me. In fact, I'd say it bothers other people that they don't often have words to describe more than it does me.
3. What is your favorite body feature?
Oh, my tattoos, most definitely. Quick projections without glyphs are so much work. I'll admit, quickly severing my astral body in any case isn't easy but the tattoos my dear father left me make the whole process much smoother and more accessible.
4. How physically fit are you?
Well, I wouldn't say I'm the most muscular human around. Actually, I'd say I fall slightly above average. My, ah, "abilities" have landed me a great deal more frailty than I'm sure I naturally deserve. Still, I manage to do fine by my body. I exercise regularly when I have to dig my way through Avanthal and, of course, my daily training - which I take much more seriously than people give me credit for.
5. How do you typically dress and what is your style?
Warmly. Have you ever been caught out in the middle of the blizzard in only breeches and a linen shirt? Once was more than enough. I tend to layer, trying to keep my outer more waterproof, or at least of a material that dries quickly. As far as style? That's something people with money worry about. People without money? We worry about money.

Family :
1. Who are your parents and what are they like?
Ah, my family. To be honest, I don't particularly enjoy speaking to others about them. I'm strange enough, you see? And should other people realize the complete insanity I was raised in... Well, I suppose I'm not really sure.
Let's start with my mother. I liked her best of the two. Her name was Alira. Alira Ebenthaw. Her maiden name is only known to me by her journal. In fact, the majority of what I know about her before her mental collapse is entirely from this tattered little thing. No, I won't be sharing anything from it. It's a bit private, you know. Mommy/son sort of bonding. Anyway, as I alluded to, she was quite mad. When I was old enough to walk and talk, I was old enough to care for her. A burden, right? Wrong! It was great fun to feel as though I was in charge of something other than myself. At least, it was fun until she passed away in the night like the paths of Avanthal after a storm. I cannot say what sort of relationship I had with her, other than I felt a deep sadness in my heart as her eyes dimmed. Now? Well, I've read, re-read, and re-re-read the many pages of her life previous to mine, and I've found to her to be quite the companion.
My father is a different story entirely. Him... I do not like speaking of, about, to... You choose the preposition, I will follow with a dislike of my father. He was rough, reclusive, but most of all? Mysterious. That mystery is what landed me in the current state I am in to this day. I did everything he asked of me and then some. "Fetch me grub, boy." "Remove your arm like this, boy." "Drain the-" Ah. Well, you get the idea. He was demanding and very little impressed him. Very little being my knack for projection. Somehow, my single talent in this area moved him to tattoo the glyphs I have now. That was a fairly traumatic experience, but while I cannot say I reveled in the pain of the needle in my flesh, I certainly enjoy the benefits. There is more I could say, but I won't. Know that he died, but his legacy lives on. What, you ask, is that legacy? Daft if I know.
2. Do you have any brothers or sisters?
I do not. While it would have been nice, even I would not wish my father upon anyone else.
3. What is your extended family like?
A good question! I assume the Ebenthaws and other Brigthshades must be somewhere, but I have never heard tell of any. I'm not certain I would like to, now that I think about it.
4. Do you consider close friends as important or more/less important than family?
Friends! To me, my friends are/]i my family.
5. Do you treat animals like family?
Well, I can't say that I do. I find animals to be entertaining, though. Both as pets and as creatures to practice my projection on.

Location :
1. Where were you born?
I was born and raised in the frozen city of Avanthal.
2. Where do you live now?
Well, my father had never made an effort to get on good terms with any of the Holds, and I, in turn, have had little luck joining one. So I still live in the Warrens, but at least I have I a job.
3. If you could live anywhere in Mizahar where would that be?
What a question! I think visiting somewhere warmer would be exciting, but... I like it here. Even if anything I don't cover up with multiple layers turns blue and purple in a few moments spent outside.
4. Do you have a favorite place to vacation or spend leisure time?
I don't really. The only "vacation" I was ever taken on was one of the worst experiences of my life. That was in the Tundra. I would not suggest vacationing there. Ever.
5. Where do you fear to be?
Jail, I suppose. Other than a correctional facility, I would like to explore the world someday. Perhaps when I have a bit more miza lining my pockets.

Traits :
1. Do you have any physical weaknesses?
Oh, I certainly do. I'm dying, you know. It's not something that can be cured either, but I can keep it from getting too much worse as long as I'm careful. As for the more mundane weaknesses... I can handle pain fairly well, but I'd have to say my entire body would be my weakness. If it's injured, I can't use my magic, you know?
2. Are you right handed or left handed?
I don't discriminate.
3. What languages do you speak? What do you sound like? Do you have an accent?
Oh do I. My Vani could use work, but it's come a long way since I was twelve. I can communicate very well in Vani, though I admit more intellectual jokes and conversations are sometimes lost on me. My accent is... Understandable. At least, that's what others have said. It's present and obvious, but it doesn't really affect people's ability to know what I'm talking about or what words I'm trying to use.
As for Common, I speak that plenty well, and so do you, apparently.
4. Do you have any odd mannerisms, annoying habits, or other defining characteristics?
When I get excited, my brain takes over and just shoots everything I'm thinking out into the open. I kind of like it, actually. It gets rid of a lot of inhibiting worries. It... Also gets me into a fair amount of trouble. I also like to fidget when I'm thinking. You know, picking at my clothes, tapping my feet. Those sort of things.
5. Do you have (or want to get) any tattoos or piercing? Why do you have them (or will get them)?
Do I want any [i]more tattoos? No. However, I do have my glyphs as I explained earlier. They help with my projection, so that's pretty handy.

Occupations :
1. What is your occupation?
I work at the Warrens as a clerk.
2. Do you like/dislike your work? Why?
Oh, I absolutely love it! Well, most of the time. I grew up around the travelers who all stay there, so being able to give back to the people who sort of raised me is pretty nice. Plus, getting paid to take money away from people who will, eventually, be my friends is a pretty entertaining idea.
3. If you could be anything you wanted to, what would you be?
Hm. Good question. I suppose I'd want to be a cloud and snow wherever I wanted to. Or maybe a giant Pycon.
4. What occupation do you admire the most? Why?
Thieves. Hands down, pockets picked. The idea of taking something without ever getting caught for it? Enticing to say the least.
5. What occupation do you lest like? Why?
Oh, I wouldn't say that lawkeeping is something I dislike, but I would admit I prefer it last to anything else. Rules and laws are so... Stifling. I'd much rather be free to do what I please, whenever it suits me.

Childhood :
1. What sort of child were you?
Oh, I was a handful. Strangely enough, I think I was more responsible as a child than I am now, after all I had my mother to take care of. I still got into loads of trouble though. I can't decide it if was more than I get into now or not. Well, it's not like I've really grown that much from childhood other than up.
2. What is your favorite memory from childhood?
3. What is your worst memory from childhood?
The little "vacation" my father took me on.
4. What sort of relationship did you have with your parents?
Well, they're both dead, so I guess none? Ah, bad taste in humor, I know. As I said before, I prefer my mother now. I don't really care for my father all that much.
5. Who was your most influential rolemodel?

Education :
1. What sort of education do you have?
A scattered one. I've been taught so many different things from the people who have traveled to and through Avanthal, but I haven't had any sort of official schooling. Though, no one here really has, so I'm not too worried.
2. Do you like/dislike learning?
Learning is great! It's the practicing of that knowledge I find a bit tedious.
3. Where or how did you learn most of your skills/abilities?
Father. He may have been crazy, but he knew what was what.
4. How do you learn best?
I learn from being interested. I've found if I lack interest, I retain very little.
5. What are your educational goals for the future?
I suppose I'd like to create a book of all the worlds different cultures and stories. It seems like a lot of work, but it might be more fun than it sounds. Just an idea though, I wouldn't necessarily label it as a "goal" per say.

Relationships :
1. Do you form close bonds with people? Why? Why not?
Well, close? I'm not sure about that. I enjoy them! People, I mean. Well, people and relationships. Both of "them", I like. As far as closeness... I suppose I do keep people a bit at arm's reach. I can't for the life of me explain why though. So sorry.
2. Do you trust people easily? If not, why not?
Certainly! Until they do something untrustworthy or seem like a shady character. Well, actually, I suppose I don't trust people and I do. It's more of a gut-feeling sort of thing that's heavily influenced on how attractive they are. The more attractive, the more inclined I am to trust. A bit convoluted, wouldn't you say?
3. Do you consider yourself straight, gay, bi, or something else?
Well, I appreciate both sexes. I'll confess the touch of woman is a bit more preferable, but I've found myself attracted to a handsome man now and then. Do I act on either of these urges? More often with women, but I try to avoid labels for myself. They're so limiting, you know?
4. Have you ever been kissed? If so, describe the first time.
5. Have you ever had sex? If so, describe the first time.

Drugs and Alcohol :
1. Have you ever been drunk? If so, describe your first time.
2. Do you like to drink on a regular basis?
3. What sort of alcohol do you prefer?
4. Have you ever tried drugs (mood altering substances)? If so, which kinds and what did you think of them?
5. What do you think of drugs and alcohol? Be specific.

Likes and Dislikes :
1. What are your hobbies?
Oh I just love causing trouble for other people. It's a bit sadistic, I know, but it's just so much fun! As I've gotten older, I may have become a bit more vicious, but I've managed to reign it in a little. After all, now that I'm considered an adult, I could get into serious trouble. I don't really want serious anything.
2. Do you like to read?
Reading? It's all right. I don't dislike it, but I'd rather a story told to me than read one.
3. What annoys you more than anything else?
I'm sure there are plenty of things that bother me day to day, but nothing really stands out. I suppose people who chew with their mouths open? Oh, and the people who speak to babies like they're some sort of tiny animal. They're not animals. They understand Common just fine, I'm sure.
4. What do you find the most relaxing activity to do?
Strangely enough, practicing my projection is when my mind feels the most calm. I guess it's due to how much concentration I have to use in order to push myself. It's probably the only time I ever focus that hard on a single thing.
5. What kinds of things embarrass you? Why?
Oh very little. I'll have you know I'm fairly well-endowed. Inappropriate? Maybe, but I'm not embarrassed by it. I think the only thing that would ever cause me to blush would be the proudly displayed form of an unattractive nude individual. Vain, I know, but my embarrassment would be more for the one on display and not myself.

Favorites :
1. What is your favorite color or colors?
I'm very partial to white.
2. What is your favorite time of day?
The mornings! The snow has just fallen, and I get to forge paths with my projection. Practical applications for my skills are always enjoyable, though I do have to be a little sneaky when I do it. Don't want everyone realizing what I can do.
3. What is the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen?
4. What do you like to eat? What do you hate to eat?
Food. I like food, and I'm not a picky eater. I'm sure there's something out there I wouldn't like, but up to this point, I put just about everything my mouth.
5. What is your favorite type of weather? Does any kind scare you?
I like the snow. That's all it ever really does here.

Outlook :
1. Are you optimistic or pessimistic?
I would say I'm pretty optimistic, but with a touch of realism. I'm not always all smiles, you know.
2. What are your religious views?
3. Would you be able to kill?
Certainly.
4. What are your views on sex?
Sex is great. What happens after sex? Not so great. If I could have sex without having to deal with the person afterwards... Well, I suppose they would be a prostitute. I'm conflicted now.
5. What, in your opinion, makes a successful life?
I suppose dying doing something you love or with someone you love. I haven't really given it much thought, nor do I really feel inclined to do so.

Actions :
1. What is the worst and best thing you’ve ever done?
2. What is your greatest regret?
3. What is your best/worst memory?
4. If you could change one thing about your past, what would it be and why?
5. What are you the most proud of doing in your life?

Emotions :
1. How honest are you about your thoughts and feelings with others?
Fairly honest. If it will cause a problem, I do my best to keep my mouth shut about it. It will often slip out though, mostly because I just stop paying attention.
2. Do you have any biases or prejudices?
Well, I'll say I don't really understand the bond between man and animal, but I'm not prejudice against it.
3. What makes you happy?
Oh my. Everything! Well, everything that's good, you know? Bad things, sometimes.
4. Who or what, if anything, would you die for?
No one. As much as I might like someone, I'll admit to my cowardice and save myself.
5. What makes you angry?
Nothing much. I get annoyed at worst.

Relationships :
1. In general, how do you treat others?
I tend to give others respect, unless I'm playing a joke on them. Otherwise, I try to keep myself slightly below them in terms of respect and honor. It tends to keep people happy.
2. Who is the most important person in your life, and why?
3. Who is the person you respect the most, and why?
4. Do you have a spouse or significant other? If not, describe an ideal lover.
5. Do you trust anyone to protect you? Who, and why

Group Situations :
1. Do you tend to argue with people, or avoid conflict?
Oh, I avoid conflict. It's much easier to get back at someone who isn't expecting it than to dive head first.
2. Do you tend to take on leadership roles in social situations?
No way. I let others do the leading and follow suit.
3. Do you like interacting with large groups of people? Why or why not?
I suppose I do? I would much prefer breaking up a large group of people, rather than be a part of them.
4. Do you care what others think of you?
To an extent. I'm not too worried about my reputation, but I would like my friends to at least appreciate me for some reason, what exactly doesn't really matter.
5. What do you think of others, in general?
I think everyone is different, which can be both a good thing and a bad thing.

Self Image :
1. What is your greatest strength as a person?
My curiosity, I think. Nothing drives me harder to accomplish something than the simple "why".
2. What is your greatest weakness?
Like most great strengths of character, I would say my curiosity if also one of my greatest weaknesses. Because I'm so driven to do something, I often won't give up when I should. That lands me into a bit of trouble from time to time.
3. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
The repercussions of my past.
4. Are you generally introverted or extroverted?
Extroverted, most definitely.
5. Are you generally organized or messy?
Despite popular opinion, I'm extremely organized. Each pile has specific contents, it just might not seem that way to the untrained eye.

Beliefs :
1. What God or Goddess do you find most appealing, if any?
2. Which God or Goddess do you fear, if any?
3. Do you have any Gnosis Marks? If so, how did you receive them?
4. What lengths would you go to to please your deity?
5. Where do you draw the line at pleasing your deity? What is too much?

Life & Death :
1. What do you absolutely live for?
I'm not certain. On one hand, I love the chaos of life. On the other, I'm also quite fond of the unknown. Maybe... Unknown chaos?
2. What is the best part of life?
The insanity of it all! Life in and of itself is a wild ride. In fact, I'd compare it to riding on a snowflake the middle of blizzard.
3. What is the best part of death?
Well, I can't really say. I suppose death makes room for life to continue. If everyone was alive forever, there'd be way too many of us.
4. If you could choose, how would you want to die?
Oh. An explosion. The bigger the better.
5. What is the one thing for which you would most like to be remembered after your death?
To be perfectly honest, I'd rather be forgotten once I'm gone. It's too disconcerting to think of people thinking about me when I'm food for the worms.
