Dark Omen From the Past

For Ricky to see Leila speak to Odis the way she had, he felt himself well up with emotion all over again. This time happiness filled him inside as he listened, listened and watched as Leila thanked Odis for saving him. She held his old companion in high esteem conpared to what others may think, her speech literally came from the heart that resided within and touched his. Ricky had no doubt Odis heard her and he would've been pleased, happy as can be to know that his master was moving on in this world. He gripped her hand more firmly with a sincere smile directed to her, and watched as even Shaco laid down to meet with his fallen brother. This moment... couldn't have been ever mmore beautiful. For Ricky to share this with a friend, it gave him a tremendous relief that he hadn't expected before. It was as if a pressure he never knew to bebe there lifted from his shoulders, and for the first time in a long while he didn't feel so alone after all. Not that he felt that way with Telion, for she too made him feel happy. Happy to be alive and here, to spend every waking moment loving her in his lifetime. Yet to feel love as strong as he did for her when around a different friend? There was no doubt about it, Leila would've been the one he'd spent his life with, had things taken a much different turn along his path.

There was a small feeling of guilt and regret that he felt within him, as he couldn't help but feel terrible about the way things turned out for Leila. He had sworn to himself in secret that he'd help her though, and he would always be there to take care of her. Thus his reasons were now justified, because now Leila proved today just how close of a real and true friend she could be for him. She had helped Ricky to lower his walls once more, practically breaking a shell he had made long ago. She set a perfect example for him, and because of this he wanted to be a good example for her. Though it may not have started off well with him never having the time to explain, he had made a promise when the season finally changed; a promise to get his shyke together and be the person he really wanted to be. For Leila he would be now and forever, the friend that always had her back when she needed him.

The both of them had allowed the tears the choked back to release, and for a good few chimes they would flow and let everything out. Ricky would put his arm over her shoulder, a friendly manner of comfort as any real friend would do. Along with this good mannered gesture he would pet Shaco, his heart filled with pure joy now that he had seen a most beautiful thing unravel before him. There was no doubt Shaco and Odis would've had much fun together, playing in the yard of Leila's new shop as the adults watched. Ricky could imagine the dogs watching over the dear child, as they would both take the responsibility of guardians for the baby. There was no doubt in his mind that his life with his family would be the best, even though his brother wasn't physically there to watch him.

"Thank you both... so much." His accent still clung as the full word was said, but just like when he first spoke it to Tel it felt right. However odd it may have sounded, he felt more inclined to express it. It was as if saying the full word gave it more meaning. As he wiped the tears from his eyes and cheeks he looked to Leila, a content smile replaced with a hearty one as he sincerely chuckled. Leila and Shaco being here really meant a lot to him, more than he even realized now that he thought about it. To say he was glad would only be an understatement. As he inhaled to speak he found himself cut off, as his attention had been caught by a man dressed in the familiar azure uniform he wore. It was Macki, one of the few he hardly ever talked to. He had short messy brown hair and green eyes and stood only a few inches taller then Leila, he was one of the less fit guards of the watch but he too took his job seriously after Kip's murder.

"You're wife told me you'd be here," he exclaimed as he rushed near them, "This is for you Ricky, you might want to keep it secret." Macki assured him with a quick glance to Leila, Ricky's faint smile at the mistake of Macki's assumption of him being wed disappeared as a folded parchment was handed to him. It had been sealed with wax and stamped with the emblem of the Wave Guard, a letter sent from the Offices. "See you at work today Ricky.... and good luck." He bowed respectively before departing, and after a few moments of wondering what the letter may contain Ricky finally looked to Leila. He wondered what it was he should keep secret, whatever it was the watch didn't want the public to know about it. Yet Leila wasn't just someone he could keep secrets from, not after everything he'd seen and experienced today. Ricky's somber face looked to the note and back to Leila, concern clear in his expression as he began to undo the parchment. In a moment Leila would be the first to be a part of Ricky's secrets, she would be again given with the greatest trust as he had given yesterday. Would she be ready to bear the burden of his secret?

oocI left off for Leila to react up to this point, so we can pick up with Ricky reading the note aloud in the next post.

Dark Omen From the Past

Postby Leila on June 11th, 2013, 8:33 pm

Leila felt Ricky put a comforting arm around her shoulder, and she leaned into the crook of his arm. She wondered where their lives would be if they had ended up together. She still loved Ricky with all of her heart, but it was not a romantic love. He was her protector, her best friend, the brother she never had, the man she wanted to be around when she had her own children, a man she wanted to grow old with. He was the dearest of friends. Besides, they'd always have that night at the theater.

Leila wiped at her eyes, wondering if any more tears were even capable of falling today. As she did so, she saw another Wave Guard, one she didn't recognize, approach them in a business like manner. He was rather short for a man, only slightly taller than Leila, and in her opinion, not very attractive. She watched as he handed Ricky a note of some sort, and gave Leila a look like she were some sort of criminal. That quickly soured Leila's already touchy mood. But she stifled it, as she looked to Ricky, wondering what the note contained that was so important, and if it really was something she shouldn't know. After the man left, "That man isn't very polite for a Wave Guard."

"He's more of the withdrawn type, been that way since Kip's murder durin' winter." He pointed out without looking away from the parchment, though admittedly he did seem a little off today. Pretty soon Ricky would know why too, for good reason in fact as the note held troubling news. Ricky read the parchment out loud so Leila too could know what was going on, even though it may have been personal business she too deserved to know what was going on in his life. "To Ricky Maze. We've had a serious unfortunate event happen early this mornin' that demands yer attention, as well as the rest of the Wave Guard in Zeltiva. Several prisoners have managed to escape our prison and now remain hidden somewhere in our city, the escaped prisoners being slavers that ye and yer friend caught on the night of... Fall fifty-nine." His expression turned grim after reading this. "We've notified the guard to be on the lookout, but we believe that particularly you, Ricky, should be aware of this. Please take caution until the escaped prisoners have been caught. Sign, Captian of the Wave Guard."

Horror and disbelief came next, as he crumbled the note with a grind in his teeth. Ricky became shocked to hear the news, as fear itself began to stir in the depths of his heart. The nightmares and memory flashed in his mind over again as anger seemed to build inside him, he looked to Leila with a little red colored in his face. "You gotta keep this a secret Leila, the guard doesn't want the city to know 'bout any of this. More importantly they want these bastards found before anythin' happens..." He sighed as his tension loosened, a disappointed look down at the crumbled parchment in his hand. He waited to hear Leila's response before anything, concern now grew in the deep reaches of his eyes.

Dark Omen From the Past

Postby Leila on June 11th, 2013, 11:20 pm

If Leila wasn't emotionally overflowing before, she certainly was after hearing what that note had to say. Her face slumped down into worried lines, her eyes panicking. The men who'd tried to kill Ricky, and had killed Odis, were free? Leila was shocked into speechlessness, because she was realizing that Ricky, and in turn Telion, was in danger. How did such a thing happen? How did people just break out of prison? That should be impossible, right? Leila then realized she didn't even know where the prison was. Just how much did she not know?

Then Ricky told her to keep the note a secret, which Leila found to be a ridiculous thing to be worrying about. He should be worrying about himself, about Telion, about their child. Leila couldn't believe how absolutely dense he could be at times. She didn't want to do what she was about to do in such a special place, but it needed done. She looked Ricky in the eye, hauled her hand back, open. She then swung it forward with all of her might, striking Ricky fully on the cheek, with a loud SMACK. Then the fiery temper that came from Leila's mother, the one she would never admit to having, combined with the level headed and protective nature of her father burst forth.

"Are you a petching idiot?! Don't worry about me and secrets right now! You have a woman and a baby on the way back home that are in danger you... you... idiot! Hurry up and get home! What the petch is wrong with you? You're a father now, a husband soon! Go act like one and get your act together! By the Gods you are the densest, most frustrating man I know!"

Leila stood there, fuming, a woman to not be refused or denied. Her hand stung something fierce, Ricky being the first person she'd ever slapped in the face. Leila hadn't even thought about herself, she could walk back on her own, but if Ricky didn't leave soon, she was going to lay into him something fierce, ugly, something that would truly make her mother proud.

Dark Omen From the Past

Ricky's eyes shrank as Leila raised her hand, and right after she smacked him hard surprise made them grow wide. His cheek had turn red as he felt a shockwave pulsate from her hand and into the skin of his face, the force of the slap rendered him almost speechless as he was caught off guard. Leila then snapped back at him about his family being in the thick of danger now, her outrage harsh and direct to the point when she barked at him. Ricky never imagined he could anger Leila in such a manner, in a way he felt he deserved it for several reasons. The main couple being their past and of course the present situation. Ricky's expression only went blank as he listened to her, and knew right then and there he best listen.

"I know that! I know that!" He defended as he looked to the ground, but it was clear that Leila wanted him to get moving. He could understand her reason for feeling this way, anger with a will to protect. She cared for him and more importantly his family, which her slap was more than enough to enterpret. She had brought sense back to him, and for his dense head was now clear. "I just... want ye to be safe." He sighed as he finally looked back at her. "Stay safe Leila." He nodded to her and passed on by, and walked on to leave the memorial grounds.

Dark Omen From the Past

Postby Leila on June 12th, 2013, 3:53 am

A bit softer, now that Ricky had given in, "I'll be fine, I promise. Stay safe Ricky," then soft enough so as her couldn't hear, "I love you. And that's why you'll always keep me safe." She watched him walk away, her face slowly creeping into a gentle smile that one wouldn't have expected from her previous outburst. She held her arm against her chest by the elbow, and looked down at Shaco who was also watching his friend walk away. "And we will protect him, won't we boy?"

Leila turned to Odis' grave, and sat down next to it. "Your owner is a blockhead, but he's so darn loveable. We will take care of him, I promise." She began rubbing the patch of dirt, "I just wish I had the ability to protect those I love, like you did. But what can I do? I can't fight, I can only heal. I just don't want him to hurt anymore." Then Leila felt something she hadn't for a while. She looked down at Odis' grave and saw that unusual purple shimmer coming from her hand. Just like that day at the beach. She'd had a talk with Professor Marin, and realized that this was her protective nature physically manifesting itself. She still didn't know what it could do, exactly, but her Professor had suggested that she could embed specific feelings, reasons to protect, things to protect from.

So Leila tried that now. But Leila didn't know what to protect Odis' grave from. Professor Marin had suggested practicing with protecting from light, so that her shield could be seen by people who weren't her. So Leila focused, remembering her desire to protect. She shifted to her knees, and placed her other hand on there, while Shaco sniffed at her handiwork. She wondered if it had a smell at all. She started at the edge of the grave, her hands moving a few inches up, then back, the lavender hued... magic pouring forth and taking shape around the earth. She smoothed out her magic at the edges, slowly continuing inward and back, just like the tide that helped her learn this skill. She continued to ebb and flow back, constantly maintaining the thought of protecting Odis from light. It was tacking chimes upon chimes, and sweat was heavy on her brow. She could see the purple layer was patchy, darker and thicker in some areas, mainly around the edges, and thinner and lighter closer to the center. But she didn't think she could keep this up, her entire body beginning to fatigue.

Leila finally cut it off as her stomach growled loudly. She couldn't do any more. She wondered how long the magic would linger, but if the last one was any indication, it wouldn't be long. But Leila didn't want to see it fade, a purple shimmer protecting Ricky's lost friend. So she stood up, grabbed Shaco's leash, and turned to go home. A headache was coming on, and she really needed to eat something, but she was content. Maybe she'd come back to maintain this, with some fresh flowers and herbs, to plant around the grave. Ricky would like that.
