Around the Chime of the 10th Bell

“Okay I’m ready,” gritting her teeth, the thief hesitantly raised up her puny fists; hopping back and forth from foot to foot in an attempt to conceal her nerves. Learning how to protect herself was proving itself to be more of a task than she could have ever possibly foreseen. Repetition of any kind was particularly hard on her mind; having a miniscule attention span and unenthusiastic nature didn’t help much either. But she was tiring of the constant patchwork of bruises and cuts she had been acquiring ever since she entered the port city.

“Come at me, I’ll try and block,” she nodded at the huge, imposing form of Daniel standing across from her. It had been her idea to train with the half Isurian and she was beginning to regret it by the chime. Drenched from head to toe in a coat of sticky sweat, Reign silently cursed at the sun for being so repulsively hot in the midst of the training session. This is just vile, she muttered to herself, wincing as a bead of sweat trickled down her face. The reek of fish and sweat… could it get any worse?
"Don't make me the villain."

Training the Thief [Daniel]

Reign had to bother Daniel for some time before he finally agreed to this. He really didn't like conflict and it didn't help that Aether seemed a little too enthusiastic about the opportunity to whack his sister around a bit. Daniel shifted from foot to foot in a pale imitation of the girl in front of him. The heat bore down like a heavy blanket smothering him in it's grip.

"Maybe if I-" his voice was quickly cut off by the other in his mind.

-Get on with it!- Daniel, in surprise, simply grimaced and gave a weighty swing from his left arm aimed directly at his sister.

The false confidence she had saturated herself in disappeared; blown away like a flower on a summer breeze. As Daniel’s large menacing fist headed straight for her face, it seemed as though the world slowed down. Perhaps this was a killing blow, and the gods were giving her one last chance to reflect on the pitiful life she had led. Reading the undertaker’s face was a task, he seemed guilty for hitting her but also excited. “Hey maybe-“it was too late for reasoning. Socked to the jaw, instant agony flooded Reign’s head; the force was so great she was tossed backwards in the air. Back slamming against the dirt, the thief hardly had the chance to emit a little yelp. Fists still held meekly in front of her face, she stared up at the sky wondering what went wrong, as well as how large of a bruise would she discover the next morning. “Good job.” She said, giving him a phony smile of approval as she shakily rose back up to her feet. It was hard not being angry at him, even though she was the one who had failed to block a punch. Blocking was simply not her vocabulary, the concept refused to click in her mind. Why stop a blow and prepare to endure another when you could turn tail and flee? But these were needed skills, it was wonder she had clawed her way along for two years.

“Okay, so now I’m going to strike and then hit me again.” Face still stinging, she hopped up and down trying to regain some of her former confidence. Thoughtlessly Reign leapt blindly toward her brother little fists flailing about wildly. Her eyes locked shut.
"Don't make me the villain."

Training the Thief [Daniel]

When his sister said she was to attack him, Daniel panicked. If she hurt him, Aether would be upset and then he wouldn't have a sister at all! The giant grabbed the girl's head and held her as far away as possible. Maybe then there wouldn't be any problems. Every thing seemed fine for a while as Reign swung blindly in front of her. Unfortunately, Daniel's concentration slipped as a bead of sweat fell into his eye, causing him to blink. Reign seized the opportunity to land single strong blow right under his lowermost left rib.

...

-YOU LITTLE WHENCH- Aether swatted her hand away and knocked her to the ground in one swipe.
