Physical Description:

Davin has light brown skin, as most Benshira do, and has light green eyes. His hair is slightly curly and comes down to the nape of his neck and a half inch above his eyebrows. He rarely combs or brushes it, but keeps it clean as best as he can manage. His face has a bearing that makes him seem older than he is, though in truth he is only 16. He is usually seen with stubble on his face, as he seldom shaves but does hack off enough hair to prevent a proper beard to grow.

He wears a black shirt With a short black coat over that, which is lined with a red and black pattern. His pants are red and baggy, as that is the style of pants in Benshira. His sash, which helps hold several personal belongings, is the same shade of red as the pants. He also wears long black gloves with metal plates set in the forearm, to allow a modicum of protection from bladed weapons. Upon his head he wears a red turban, with a cloth to hide his face.

The Building Blocks

Character Concept

Davin is a Benshira without a home, without a family, without a culture, and without a god. In short, he is a Benshira who knows little of his own culture. He was raised in Ahnatep, among the Dust Pillars, and as such has been regarded as vermin for most of his life. He has grown up accepting that he is worth less than the clothes on his back.

While he did have father in the form of Desh, the relationship was hardly parental. Desh only taught Davin the skills necessary for their next job. Luckily, that came to include reading and writing.

As a result of this less than stellar upbringing, Davin has little knowledge of who he is and where he came from. He doesn't see the Benshira as a proud people, he sees them as the lower class of Ahnatep. He hates his station, but believes that is simply the way of the world. He has heard only stories of past Benshirans, and even then, they are not well remembered by him.

In short, Davin is a man with no self-identity, and grew in a city where he was never wanted. This has made him unable to trust, and easily suspicious. He longs for material gain and power over his life. But for all that he is still only a common street urchin living in squalor. At least, for now...

Character History:

Davin grew up poor and isolated from his culture within the city of Ahnatep. A city full of hedonists and savage hierarchy that is far from kind to Benshira, he has been shunned and shamed for most of his life.

Davin is a an impersonator, a liar, a thief, and an all around scoundrel. He has few redeeming qualities. He is clever, cunning and manipulative, however, and in the world of lowlifes and criminals, that is all that is required to rise. Davin is, or rather was, the son of Desh, a thief of low cunning who was rather insignificant. Davin's mother was a whore, or at least, that was what Desh always told him. Davin never had the heart to find out if that was true.

In Davin's youth, Desh would often have Davin distract a crowd while Desh picked their pockets. When Davin's face became recognized, Desh had him dress in disguises, and change his voice. Though no matter what Davin did for his father, he was beaten for one slight of another. Rudeness, lack of respect, almost getting caught... these were the greatest reason for his beatings. Davin, when he was smaller, took solace in the fact that it seemed his father only beat him when he was drunk. Though as he got older, he only came to hate alcohol and all drunkards.

When Desh's strategy ever got old, he thought of new ways to implement it. Davin has played old men, drunk men, young slave boys, merchants, and even a human-formed Dhani. As the ploy grew, so did Desh's reputation and contacts. He was clever, in his own way, never attracting the attention of the Eypharians, for fear of capture, or serious investigation. Instead he kept to the slums and preyed on his fellows, those who were too poor to live in the city, and too poor to leave it.

But Desh became bolder, and had his eyes set on the glamor and glory that Ahnatep offered. Using a substantial amount of money that he had stolen with Davin's help, he had the boy learn Morphing from a traveling wizard. Both experiences were traumatizing for Davin, whose teacher cared very little for his health. The wizard had Davin locked in a small wooden box, so small that Davin had to crouch and twist his body uncomfortably to get in it, and instructed him to detach himself from his body if he ever wanted to be free again.

With nothing else to go on, Davin spent a week inside the box, listening to the wizard whisper to him. Davin cannot remember the whispers, only the hallucinations, and cramps. He can only remember the hunger and thirst, and darkness. He only remembers hell. On the eighth day he managed to break free, his hand turned into a bulbous misshapen lump of grey flesh. He had been able to smash his way out of the box. As reward, his father paid the wizard to teach him to read and write both Common and Arumenic. The lessons were fraught with sleepless nights, whippings, and meditation.

Although the ordeals were nightmarish, Davin took the attention and lessons to heart, believing that it meant his father for all his faults did in fact love him. The truth was revealed the day the wizard left Eyktol, and proclaimed him graduated. His father had been preparing him for a daring theft in the Eypharian part of the city, that required the theft of a slaving contract to be brought to the local crime lord. Other men had failed, and his father meant to keep all the gold while his son did the work. With difficulty, Davin was able to morph into an Eypharian and use his limited skills to steal the contract, without getting caught. However, an opportunity came to his attention. He spotted a wanted poster.

His father was wanted for quite a lot of Miza, singled out due to the success of his previous pickpocket career. Seizing the moment, Davin came to a few city guards, telling them he knew where the man was hiding. After using his wit to fool them, he set a trap for his father. He left them to it, and went after the crime lord, receiving the bounty on the contract by himself. As soon as he had the gold in hand, the place was swarming with the city guard, tipped off by Davin. Thus he collected the bounty on both his father and the crime lord on the same day. His reputation among the criminal underworld was untarnished, however, due to his disguises.

Once free of his father, and after he had gotten the rewards, he was approached by one of the guards, who said he was intrigued by Davin's plot. Before Davin could confront the man, he was patted on the shoulder and a name was whispered into his ear. "Take the hand that beat you, take the hand of Desh." He had been marked by Sagallius, the god of manipulation. Later on, only a few days since betraying his father, he heard news of his escape. Now, a few scant months afterward, he seeks to outwit and maim his father, before his father does likewise.

The Inner Core

Persona
Personality

Davin's new-found freedom has made him a new man. No longer the burden of his father, or the hapless lackey, he has found that he is a greater thief than his father ever was. And the reason is simple. Davin is easy to trust and a skilled liar, able to weave intricate tales and keep them all straight. He is also adept at using his skills of disguise, impersonation and morphing to become someone completely different whenever the situation calls for it. He frequently morphs into the form of an Eypharian to gain access to places a Benshiran would normally not be able to go.

He can play the roles of brute, noble, slave, or anyone else to get another to act as he wants. His philosophy is best described as "the strong make use of the weak." it is the only constant, as his father made quite clear. Occasionally he might feel pity or remorse for his victims, but he hardly ever acts on feelings of guilt. He occasionally wishes it wasn't that way, but he believes the world must be handled as it is, not as he wishes it to be.

Davin does not trust easily, and is in truth easy to slight. He is very good at acting cordial, however, and one may not be able to tell if he's been angered. He has a very good control of his expressions. He's had quite a lot of practice keeping his thoughts hidden so as not to get beaten for insolence.

Preferences
Dream

All men have dreams, ambitions, and goals. Davin is much the same. He dreams of riches, and power, things he has never had. Though he has often seen it, being a citizen of Ahnatep. With the mark of Sagallius on his left shoulder, he knows that he can rise far, and he will gladly serve this god if it means a way to power and money. In fact he's not sure that there is a difference between the two. He has only tasted a few months of freedom, but he has learned to love it. Though he has never been a true slave, he has felt one for most his life. He relishes the opportunity to hunt and take revenge on his father. And is eager to rise to his proper station, for he knows he is meant for more than the slums and lowly status he was born to.

Ethics - Might makes right. Forgiveness, kindness, love, they are for the Weak. For the Strong, they are only tools used to manipulate. He learned that the hard way, and he has no reason to fall prey to them ever again.

Likes - Davin enjoys bright colors, jewels, perfumes, and other signs of wealth. These are things he never had, though he worked hard to make sure his father had them. He sees them as a mark of the strong. Only the strongest, that is, the smartest as well, are wealthy, and signs of wealth are proof or their superiority.

Dislikes - Davin hates drunkards, his father, and the wizard who taught him his magic. He wishes to enact vengeance on them both. Though he does not know the wizard's name. It was never given to him, as he had to call the man 'master.' One day though. he'll enslave his father, and kill the wizard who brought him such misery. Barely a week goes by without a nightmare about the small wooden box.
