Here sat Kise, the big moment, and the first gear to the big machine of his training. He sat with his legs crossed on the floor, his patron a few feet across from them with a series of sticks and rocks separating them. He was ready to learn the lesson at hand, which his master proudly hyped up, or at least it seemed that way. His first fire, his first own man made fire, made by him. A man. It was nice, it was interesting, it was... Complicated. He had gotten a LOT of wood, because his patron had told him to, but why? He was confused a bit, but did it anyway. Apparently it took a lot of wood to make fire, but that was just from his pure instinctive observation. But then again, anything was possible, and his patron did know best. But also, these lessons were complex... And they had just began, now he was just supposed to sit and listen? Insanity.

"Look Kise, I'll repeat myself, but your gonna have to pay attention this time; Ok?" Ser Corben had gone over how to make a fire several ways, several times, but none stuck with the boy. He tried to teach his squire as simple as possible, but on the contrary he was far from giving up on him, very far from giving up. He just had to put it simpler, where Kise would be able to understand. "Ok look Kise, I want you to stop what your doing... I think we need to just calm down, relax, and start over. So with that being said.. Hungh!" Ser Corben dropped off his log, sitting right besides his squire with his legs crossed, closing his eyes with his hands on his knees.

"Oh... Here we go again..." Kise groaned as he leaned back, crossing his legs and following his patron, his eyes silently closing. He was tired of these lessons, because they weren't getting anywhere. They were moving slowly, and they were frustrating. Yes, nobody said that extreme training was gonna be fun, but would it kill to at least be faster? This was slow, boring, and tiring. Exhausting was a good word, this was just the beginning, and he was close to becoming homesick. But nonetheless, master knew best, so he just agreed and followed. Inhaling through his nose, the stuffy woodland air was more than enough to mix with frustrations and emotions, and was just what he needed. He slowly exhaled, out his mouth, everything leaving and expelling from his body. He was clean.

"Ok Kise, hya-" He rose up with an old groan, exaggerating his age, looking around feverishly. Kneeling, he picked up two fist sized rocks, handing them to his squire. A quick hum, giving off the impression that he had a plan, perhaps the world wasn't ready for words. He had piles of everything laid out, it seems while his squire was out he had also gathered things. "Dried leaves, quantity is great, quality not so much. Burns good, but burns fast, needs to be replaced fast. Understand? Also is a great fire catcher." He knew that this was the only way to speak to Kise, on the most basic level possible. Like a caveman pretty much, because that's all that Kise knew how to do.

Hit things.

"Yeah..." Kise replied as his patron spoke in broken sentences, it was all starting to make sense, it really was. He was basically saying that the leaves were good and bad, easy to collect, but used up just as fast. Not just that, fire catcher? What did that mean... Guess he would have to find out later, hopefully soon, but at least he was getting somewhere. He watched as his patron had a board like piece of wood, atop of the dead leaves and wood chips. The board had a v shaped cut in it, with a stick he was holding between his hands, motioning for him to come over. "Yes Ser." He said as he scooted over, giving his patron the rocks as he watched him stand up and sit back on his logs, as he began talking.

"Rocks, when struck together..." Ser Corben said with a sigh, perhaps talking like this was tiring, but he enjoyed the laziness of it a bit. He demonstrated exactly what he was going to say before trailing off, striking the rocks together swiftly, a tough streak of orange flying out. "Spark, which is created from high intense friction... Err, I mean hitting something against something else really hard, in this case it's the rocks. These stones are special however, they are not only smooth, but dry. Dry is always good here Kise, use common sense there, but as always..." He tossed the rocks, not too far out of sight, but far enough to show that he was saying what if they didn't have the rocks. "This way isn't always surefire, literally, it won't always create fire. So what you need to do is clasp that stick as I did, and basically rub your hands like your trying to warm them up."

"Sure, Ser, I guess I'm willing to try anything right now." Kise said as he finished watching, he was now leaning forward as he rested on his knees, his hands firmly holding the stick between them. He wasn't to interested in what exactly the world had to say now, he knew exactly what to do, he knew how to do it. He began instantly, it was a simple task with no need for further talk. He was ready to dive in, that was until his patron began talking once more, talking and pointing. Slow and simple... Kise was beginning to feel a bit mocked.

"This is the spindle, that is tinder, that is... Well that's your stick. Basically, before we begin, let me explain what exactly is going to be happening here. First, we built your tinder, this is what will be catching your fire for you and starting it up. There are many things that can burn in this world of ours, and some of course work better than others. Take leaves for example. If you were to throw a dry leaf into a fire, as we are using now, they would burn instantly. However if the leaf was still alive, green, and fresh off the tree... It wouldn't go out so easily. Wet fuel last longer, burns slower. Dry runs out quickly, burns quickly. Now-" He groaned once more as he began do hand gestures, his lesson seemed to become more simplistic than ever.

"There are many things that will burn, and that my boy, is knowledge. Basically anything that you can think of, can burn, that's the beauty of it. No just sticks and leaves, I'm talking plants and shrubs, hell even dung... However... The smell wouldn't be so lovely. Now, simplistically speaking, this is what's going to happen. Your going to rub that stick, and basically create enough friction against that groove that an ember will occasionally spark out, then tap the board and let it fall to your tinder. Now at first, it may now succeed, but keep at it and one will catch onto the leaves and dead grass. And just incase you were wondering, this exercise works out the triceps and biceps, thus actually improving you in more ways that one. Enjoy and good luck... Wake me up... Once you get a fire going."

Kise watched as his patron got up, and walked over to the spot he sat at earlier, when he was sharpening his sword. He noticed him lay down, and drift off to what he thought was sleep... Poor guy, he was gonna wake him up instantly, because he knew for a fact he was gonna beat this no problem. "Heh... Coolio... Here we go." Kise grunted, preparing himself, he was ready to go. Ready to do the deed. Ready to learn more about being a man, to become stronger... He was ready to-

Start a FIRE.

Frustration. This crap was impossible, no more than impossible it was... Ultra impossible? Bottom line it wasn't as easy as he expected it to be, and he already wanted to quit, but he couldn't. Because of his patron. Not because he didn't want to disappoint him, it was far more worse... That bastard was laughing at him. Seriously, he had been at it for about five chimes, and his patron was seriously laughing up a storm. Really? Out of all the times to be laughing, why now? Why not help? Why not show him how to do it first? That was it, he couldn't take anymore, Kise had to speak out. He had to show his patron that he was a man now, a man that deserved respect and seriousness. He was going to do it.

Right now.

"Ser... Maybe you should stop laughing, and think about helping me out here?"

Oh yeah. That felt good. Yes, it probably wasn't the most cruel words ever spoken on this earth, but for someone as nice as Kise, that was as good as it got. He felt like he had just told him off, smiling to himself, a bit more happier and relieved. Then he felt a bit bad, the silence catching him off guard, so he wanted to say sorry. But what he saw, scared the hell out of him. His patron's face, was plastered with a look of pity and confusion, and Kise completely dropped his stick. Looking at him with another look of confusion, his face naive as ever. "What? Was that too mean? I'm sorry Ser..."

[color=white][i] "Seriously Kise... I don't know what's wrong with you, it's like one moment your confident and collected and the next your... This." Ser Corben said as he pointed towards him, his laughing coming back into play, as he leaned in and rubbed the boys head. "Very well, I will give you a tip, which is more than my master ever gave me. When you release embers, those bright orange things, you tap your board. Good luck."

True, that sounded like good information, possibly because it was information in general. He actually took it, and he decided to go with it. Originally he just let the damn things die out, although they were pretty, their lives were short. So what would happen if he attempted to... Well, it was definitely worth a try, what could he possibly lose in the process? So slowly, he picked up another straight stick, this time standing it up delicately on it's end. He took a while, but clasped it between his thick hands, strangely they were beginning to become rough. As he sped up, rubbing the stick back and forth, fighting the friction. Rapidly, he began to do it so fast, a noise could be heard. Looking up to see his patron, a look of interest plastered on his face, did he believe in him? Either way, looking up slowed down his work, so he returned his attention back to his fire. And instantly, his eyes lit up, as he snapped to a small ember. It was tiny and bright, but by the gods it was beautiful, and he did exactly what his patron had told him.

Tossing the stick and then tapping the board lightly with his right index finger, but it didn't go as he expected, the ember just dropped straight into the damn timber. Well, it was lost in that pile of flammable contents, but it was still nice that he created it. He looked up at his patron with a smile, ready to make a joke. "Well I guess I-"

"BLOW IT!"

Ser Corben didn't always yell... But when he did it was scary, more than scary, it was shocking. Instantly, Kise slid and laid on his stomach, getting eye level where his ember disappeared. Blowing lightly, and nothing happened, did it die out like the others? He raised himself up almost push up like, staring at the pile, waiting for something awesome. Nothing. "Ser... I think it's broken..." Kise said almost whiny like, glancing up at his patron, then back down. But then, as if by a miracle, he could see it. A small fire trying to grow, barely rising up with a flame, releasing a tiny fume of smoke into the air.

Ser Corben was proud of his squire, no doubt, he loved the effort and attitude. It was amazing, and reminded him of himself, except the whiny voice at times. Now that he was almost done, he would have to practice it a little more, and then move on to a new lesson. "Kise, now you take your stick, and feed that fire. Treat it as a child... Your young baby that you took time to birth, raise and nurture it, and soon it will repay you with the same gratitude by burning brightly. Remember Kise, a fire isn't picky, it chooses to burn all. Now go... Learn."

"Yes Ser!" Kise said happily, poking his little flame with his stick, tossing and feeding leaves to it. Letting the fire take it's time, growing stronger on it's own. Until it was a true flame, beginning to burn all the fuel, growing to be quite the fire. He raised his board, exposing the fire to the world, staring at it proudly. That was... Until that monster, decided to stomp the life out of his kid, his baby! For crying out loud, Ser Corben literally got up, and used his size one hundred boots to stomp his baby. One stomp was all it took to end the life of the little flame that could, one damn step! And all Kise could do was look at him like a little hopeless kid... For shame, for shame. Damn patron of his!

"Ok Kise, good job, that fire was starting to look nice. I want you to practice it again, and once more after that, then we go grab more fuel. By we I mean you... Then after that it's more fire philosophy and reality. Be prepared, for now I will tend to the horses." He walked off, towards the horses, as he had said.

"Well... I was the one who approached master about this training... Looks like I'm gonna just have to try harder!" He said as he grabbed his stick, smiling victoriously.

Because... He trusted in his patron, and he was promised power. So he would continue this training for as long as needed.
