[Sultros Blades via Ironworks] New Steel

Postby Ethan Ironhorse on July 31st, 2013, 11:17 pm

Ethan bowed again to Master Eanos after he said he would confirm the order and cost with the quartermaster. He had been impressed by the smith, most men said that Isurian were some of the best smiths in the world and he wondered what kind of master pieces the man had made. At times he when he had seen Ros work the forges, the iron and steel pieces he made were as delicate as flower petal and yet could take a hard blow from any hammer Ethan could wield. Ros was truly the greatest smith that Ethan had ever known and his experiments with alloys had stunned Ethan. Yet in the back of his mind, Ethan often thought about how little recognition outside the trade Ros received. The man was brilliant and an expert at his craft, yet children didn’t dream of becoming the next Ros unless you were a blacksmith child. At times Ethan wondered how could the brilliance of one man be overshadowed by a Knight wrapped in the man’s craft.

Even though Ethan was doing a bit of day dreaming he noticed that Eanos went over to the bars and ran his fingers over the metal. He hadn’t done it in a loving manner, like a man expecting his imagination to come real… Ethan should know he had been accuse of doing the same thing once or twice. No he noticed subtle things, Eanos breathing had slowed and become steadied. The man’s gaze appeared hazing and unfocused. The finger movement was long and drawn out, though Ethan suspected the casual touch was made to look like nothing was a missed but due to the fact that he had been trained in shielding Ethan felt the slight buzz of djed in the air. He couldn’t get any information more than a vague feeling that magic was being used. One of his eye brows raised for a second, before he looked over to Hadyn. The feeling that Ethan had overstepped his bounds by questioning the use of magic in the man’s own shop guiltily wrapped itself in his mind.

The next part wasn’t as welcomed to Ethan’s ears. Eanos was releasing some of his apprentices back to the Ironworks. If that was the case, the small jobs that Ethan did at the foundry and forge would quickly dry up and he would be back walking between field and outpost for money. As a farrier, he was coming into his own, so he didn’t have to worry about losing his job at the Ironworks altogether, but work for him would become scarce since his brother and father were still working. Ethan as Eanos continued, Ethan felt the stab of jealousy at the promotion to true senior apprentice for Hadyn. Ethan was happy for her and yet jealous, not because she was a woman… no because she was his age and would have a better life and job than he. His mind said that he had no right to be jealous, Hadyn worked hard and more than likely deserved the reward Eanos put on her. Yet, he felt smaller somehow, less of a person because Ros hadn’t seen the same in him. If he truly wanted to go for Senior Apprentice, he had at least a year of work for foundry to complete before he could even broach the subject.

Before Hadyn could see Ethan’s own emotional turmoil, he put on a smile and watched as she turned back to him. As Hadyn told him about coming back into his life, Ethan couldn’t hold back his own response. “Y’lready thin’ of dancing with me?” a coy smile came about his face. It wasn’t really a question to be answered and he hoped to just see a smile and perhaps light in her own eyes when she asked about what he charged for his time.

“Well y’ treated me to a ‘mile and wink, so I ‘igure you own me a song and a drink. ‘hich be a fair price! ‘Ost woman I ask for that an’ a kiss for ‘very chime!”

A warm smiled sparked across the woman's lips as replied cheekily to her statement. She was glad to know the years hadn't done away with his infectious humor. After handing him the predetermined Miza for his troubles Hadyn crossed her arms loosely before her chest and leaned a shoulder against the wall.

"Ah, careful what y'wish for," she warned him with a smirk. "Fairly certain no one's deservin' of the squallin' I try t'pass as singin'. How 'bout you stop by the Stallion tonight an' I buy y'somethin' fancy to whet your pallet, hm?"

A warm smile crossed her lips as she watched him. This was not the time to catch up with childhood friends, not with Eanos so displeased with the state of the place. As it was, Hadyn would need to concentrate her efforts to effectively consider the Master's parting orders. Yorick would return in a few bells to finish his commission and she wanted to warn him of the sour mood his antics put their patron in before he received a tongue-lashing. He deserved it, but she wanted to get a few licks of her own in before sending him on his way to Eanos.

"I'll be there 'bout 'round the 21st bell," Hadyn followed up a nod in the general direction of the Stallion. "Your boy Jaffery can come to if his head isn't smartin' too harsh."

It was a loose invitation. Anyone who knew Hadyn Skellig knew she haunted the Rearing Stallion as loyally as any drunk. If Ethan was unable to join her this night there would surely be another opportunity. Shifting her weight against the wall, the woman waited for the man's response, hoping he'd take her up on the offer. She wasn't looking forward to drinking with the lads of Sultros Blades tonight.

[Sultros Blades via Ironworks] New Steel

Postby Ethan Ironhorse on August 6th, 2013, 3:36 am

As Hadyn crossed her arms loosely before her chest, Ethan’s eyes betrayed the delicate game they were playing by drawing his view from her face to her chest. Thoughts of bare flesh and the taste of sweat came to mind, for a brief moment he didn’t hear the first part of her conversation, except for the little bit about squalling and singing. Vowing in his mind to make sure that he paid attention to her and not to her bust or her backside, he was able to realize that she said yes to having a drink. Smiling, he thought about the Rearing Stallion, his usual haunt was the Broken Casket, the spiced potatoes and sailors songs often brought warmth to Ethan’s dreams and bones, but the Rearing Stallion allowed for a different crowd, one where it wasn’t unknown for a man warm more than his bones.

Ethan snorted briefly at Hadyn’s comment about Jaffery. “Jaffery, couldn’t ‘ring a stud too ‘are without ending in ’tween the two. ‘Sides Jaffery, like’s ‘hem thin as a willow an’ a bit of mush ‘n the head, ‘een through the laundry lass' ‘wice already. ‘lright the Stallion it is, hope the ‘raken don’t ‘oot me out of the ‘roken Casket for questing after a ‘mile.”

Ethan picked up the sack of money and briefly weighed the sack in his hand. It felt a bit heavy, even if it was mix coin. Taking a moment to look away from Hadyn bust… eyes! Look at her eyes! Ethan scanned the slate, and sat it down. One of the main reasons that Ethan was acting as Senior Apprentice was he had the math skills to do the figuring. A full bar of high steel was around forty pounds of material, or thirty two gold mizas. Looking at the order he went ahead and added up all the weight of the high steel bars. Twenty plus twenty halves… Thirty bars. Ethan made three marks on the slate. Aghhh, fifty quarter bars… Ros said forty quarter bars would be like ten, Ethan made another mark on the slate tablet. So ten bars at ten pounds apiece… eighty gold miza’s… so eighty gold miza’s plus forty full bars at thirty two gold miza’s. Ethan stopped and took a piece of chalk out to add three hundred twenty four times together plus eighty came out to be thirteen hundred and sixty. He checked his figures twice more before diving the number in two, as the Knights would consider the account balanced once the orders were complete. So six hundred and eighty coins, of course the amount of weapons the material could make would keep them busy for the next year. So seven and half mild bars at forty pounds each and twelve and half bars of pig iron… Ethan marked the slate again and again as he checked his work over and over. Mild steel went for six silver mizas per pound and iron went for five silver mizas. Ethan began to sweat as he finally came to the answer, one thousand one hundred and ten gold miza’s, Ros required only a quarter payment on delivery and settled up accounts at the end of the year so two hundred and seventy seven gold miza’s with five silver. Ethan began to count the coin out. He placed the coins in stacks of ten and simply stacked coin to the proper height, at the end he had thirty nine stacks and five silver.

Ethan grunted and returned the hundred and thirteen gold mizas back to Hadyn. “ ‘it careful Hadyn, someone ‘igured wrong. I ‘ight have done the same, except for the slate and ‘essons in ‘iguring." Ethan went out to the wagon and Jaffery handed Ethan a note from Ros. Reviewing the note Ethan smiled, Ros had done the accounting and Ethan had come up with the right number. With a bit of relief he dumped the coins into a strong box with a slot, the coins fell into the strong box so that only Ros would have the key to open in back at the Ironworks. Ethan waved to Hadyn, “See in a’it!”

The woman smirked at Ethan's jab at the lad. Jaffery seemed to do well enough under the tutelage of Ironworks. He'd come into his own soon enough. A grin pulled cautiously at her lips as the man continued. She couldn't recall the last time she'd been in the Casket, though, if memory serves, it was a fine establishment for a foul mouthed drunk like herself. The Stallion was getting a tad old. The smile faded however as her friend began counting the coins nestled in the pouch Yorick left. Brow furrowed she accepted the extra Miza with a nod.

"Aye," she agreed, displeasure written on her soot-stained face. "I'll mention it to the bloke."

Yorick, you idiot, she thought grimly. She chewed gloomily on her lower lip as Ethan deposited the correct payment with Jaffery. Deep in thought and concern she barely noticed his wave and departing statement. Glancing up with a stain of color on her cheeks, the woman offered a delayed hand in farewell.

"Hope you can still drink," she called out with a smile, though the sepulchral visage hadn't quite left her face. Turning away from the departing wagon, Hadyn winced aloud at the task before her. Seems it would be ages til she met Ethan at the bar.
