Viper stood there motionless for a moment, simply staring at the monster. Disbelief almost overwhelming him in the event of its death. We did it... His smile widened some. Then when he heard the word victory yelled out by Ser Wade, his head snapped to the direction of the sound. Raising his bow high into the air, he likewise yelled out the same word as he began to jog to the site of the slain beast.

When he arrived, it was only then he realized how tense his body had become. With the danger now passed, all that tension lifted off his shoulders eliciting a sigh of relief to emanate from Viper's lips. His eyes looked the Balicani's shot, torn, hacked, and now mangled corpse. Even in such a state, the monster was still a wonder to behold.

Viper's thoughts were interrupted as Ser Wade actually approached him, apologizing for the earlier slight, and actually paying him a compliment of sorts. It took Viper off guard as he pondered the words in his mind. Normally he would have found this too, offensive. He was a Drykas after all. But then, Viper had to take in what he was referring to. His people were raiding, kidnapping, and in the worse cases outright enslaving those unwilling to go to Endrykas. It was an extremely rare time when he was ashamed of who he was...or at least where he had come from. And it was also such a strange thing how battle could allow peoples of different cultures to at least come to a mutual respect for one another.

Viper bowed sincerely out of respect this time, and in a tone lacking all the sarcasm of his earlier reply said,
"Thank you Ser Wade. It was an honour to fight alongside you and your Knights." Yet another oddity Viper now felt. With as much time as he had been spending with the Knights. He was beginning to feel almost as comfortable fighting with them as he would any of his fellow Drykas.

As the Knight made his way to pay his respects to the other warriors, Viper's attention was drawn back toward the creature they had just slain. Having been given permission to harvest prizes, Viper moved forward to do just that, noting curiously though how the Knights moved off seemingly not interested in such things. Out of respect for the warriors who had fought in close quarters, he stayed away from the legs which they themselves had crippled. Figuring they would want prizes from areas they themselves had attacked. Instead, he pulled a knife and moved to one of the uninjured legs. Reaching out, he cut of the claws which were as sharp as meat hooks.

He then moved his way forward to the head. As much as he'd love to bring back the head for placement on a plaque, it was much to large. Besides, that would be terribly selfish of him to deny the others of any types of prizes from the head as well. Examining his arrow which had much to his great surprise been the killing blow, Viper finally withdrew the projectile with a bit of satisfaction and returned it to his quiver. It alone was a prize all to itself, he thought to himself. Still, kneeling down, he gingerly removed a handful of 21 of the serrated teeth from its large jaws to go alongside the 5 claws he had already harvested. For he want intent on making a necklace with these gathered prizes.

Viper stood back when he was finished, so as to give more room to the other men looking for their "bonuses". As he regarded the slowly disappearing carcass, he looked down at his own clothes. His adventures here in Syliras had so far cost him much of his finer looking items including now, his cloak. If he was going to stay here...he should probably look into better armour.

Looking around, he found a nearby body of one of his fellow hunters. After paying his respects to the man for his courage and sacrifice, Viper removed the man own cloak for use as a bag to lay his next prizes into. He quickly returned and began to remove hundreds of scales for use in an armoured undershirt. The shimmery green to slightly gold colours of the scales would be both very protective and light weight, but also very decorative to the new outfit he also now planned to have made up. His mind wandered to a few people back at Endrykas who would probably be just a little envious of such a prize.

Armoured Shirt Design :

Satisfied that he had enough to complete the item he wanted, and happy there was plenty left if anyone else wished to do the same, he backed away once more. His habit of making use of every item a kill had to provide, had Viper wanting to do more gathering. But he suspected he had already gathered enough, and anymore really would just be greedy. He would keep an eye on it though. If others didn't strip the one or two other things he had an eye on, he would return. The items he would return for after being paid would end up being more scales to make a pair of matching pants to his scale shirt, a few dozen extra scales to sell (275 total - 100 Scale shirt, 125 scale pants, 50 for sale), and finally a strip of the fur (2ft. x 6in.) from his underbelly. That he would use as the top decorative piece to a new cloak he now needed as well.

For now though, he caught back up with the departing Ser Wade, prizes draped over his shoulder in his makeshift bag.
"Ser Wade. One more moment if you would. What would you like us to do the bodies of our fellow hunters? Would it be possible to at least bury them if we can't bring them back to the city for burial?" Whatever Ser Wade would respond with Viper would be fine with. In any case, Viper would remove the valuables from each dead man that hadn't been turned into a puddle of smouldering goo. Each man's personal effect kept in their own individual bags. For Viper had it in mind to return their things to their families if he could find them. If not...extra bonus. Respect, honour. But waste not. That was his philosophy.

After everything at the battle scene had been finished, Viper returned with the others to the wagons. Instead of availing himself of their use however, Viper instead opted for his mount. A very excited Aeyan, neighed happily upon seeing his rider's return. A chuckle escaped Viper's lips as he rested the bags of items over Aeyan's back and then moved to greet his friend.

"Hey brother." He said in a soft voice as he ran a hand along his striders neck. "It's good to see you too. Don't tell Ser Wade this, but it probably was a good thing you didn't come after all. Not sure we would have been able to handle that beast over that terrain. But anyway, let's go home yes?" Another laugh, and Viper mounted up.

He then rode over to where Edreina and Razkar were. Looking to Razkar first, he nodded respectfully.
"It was good fighting alongside you sir. Impressive your skills are Razkar." He then turned to Edreina and in an obviously joking manner said,"And you my dear, need to learn to duck." He laughed a bit before continuing. Still, brave of you to take on that Balicani alone like you did. I hope you heal up quickly." His tone had shifted from one of jest, to one of sincerity in his final words. With a smirk and another nod to both of them he moved off toward other people he wished to thank.

"Matthew!" He called out to the man that had done much to give everyone hope and courage. "First of all, I wish to apologize. Honestly, when we first met, I had very little expectations of your assistance at all on this expedition. But I couldn't have been more wrong. I want to thank you for your help out there." Viper did not embellish more. He knew Matthew would know what he was talking about. Instead he held out his hand to shake.

He then rode off to Isolde, to congratulate her on her excellent shot which help to keep the Balicani to distracted and injured to be much threat any further to the men who had been at the very forefront of the attack. And then finally to Sagitta, to express appreciation for her work keeping the archers armed, her bravery in striking the monster with her grappling hook, and finally congratulating her as well on her amazingly effective attack.

With his congratulations and best wishes all expressed, Viper rode alongside the convoy quietly all the way back to Syliras to receive pay.

The beast died hard, but what else could it do? What else did they expect? For it to meekly roll over, eyes blank, neck bared for the killing blow? No, no, no, Razkar knew it would not be so easy.

Oldest tigers are the most dangerous, his mother told him years before, because part of them want to die. They know that the receding years will hold only more weakness. Better to die with their claws slashing and jaws buried in a worthy enemy.

Razkar knew the Balicani didn't want to die, but it also knew it wouldn't live. So what was the solution? Simple: fight.

Not that it could do much, despite the shattering roar it emitted... but even that ended in a wet, almost moaning gurgle. The insects that surrounded it were still fresh, arm, wounded, but the beast...

"Finish it! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!"

They moved smooth and confident now, the song from the now-silent Matthew spurring them onward. Ser Wade and Razkar switched position, now on the creature's left and right respectively. It reared up as best it could on three legs-

-an was rewarded by a trio of arrows and a crossbow bolt thudding into a neck more glistening with blood than mucus now.

"Myrian! Right front leg! Wade! Jaw! I will go for its crippled leg!"

Razkar didn't question or even react; he just moved when he had an opening. Gnosis throbbing slightly, just beyond the Balicani's range, he waited, watching the shining Knight duck far more nimbly than a man his size should have been able to, spinning, longsword flashing-

-and the Balicani roared, left leg falling away in a spray of blood, crunching down on a bare kneecap that glistened like a shorn skull-

Now!

And Razkar moved fast, spinning to left as he lunged at the leg now holding most of the Balicani's weight, leaning on it's right-

-runes and scream of the long-dead Akalak roaring, screaming, howling up his arm along with Myri's Blessing-

-and the Balicani... fear. He heard fear, the scream of horror a child has for the shadow he sees in his room at night, or the old man for the same shadow. Both see it; only one knows what it truly means.

As far as Razkar knew, cared or felt, it meant that the leg was nearly severed. Muscle was cleaved through like butter, scales that could turn away arrows crunched under that thunderous blow, bone shattered and snapped under it-

-three hundred pounds of dying Balicani slammed onto the ground, black legs thrashing madly, pain-maddened eyes snapping to the Myrian as it's long neck struck whip-like at the Myrian-

-who dropped down like a stone, Gnosis blazing in that moment like a brand on his neck as he saw the snapping jaws and the neck attached to it lash over him-

-the handle of his gladius-

-his hand jerking up and ripping it free-

-another scream as the removed blade released a minor torrent of green, steaming, hissing venom that burned the Balicani's own scales as it sprayed from the home. Razkar didn't wait for the follow up blow, rolling to his left as the beast thrashed and roared and screeched and howled at the bare rocks around it-

THUNK!

A sound like an ax through a thick, gnarled old tree. Or a cleaver through a tough side of beef. Wet and full and definitive. Razkar blinked and saw the Balicani's eyes pop open, black and alien orbs crossed as it saw the huge ax buried in its snout. Its nostrils twitched, muscles rippled, gearing up for a final-

THUNK.

Smaller. Quieter. But much more lethal. Razkar blinked again and in that space of time an arrow buried in the side of Balicani's head. Half of it vanished into its head, and after a stunned silence and a heavy, almost-relieved sigh... whatever light lived in those eyes went on to the next place.

A hushed, humbled silence followed the creatures finalslumping, as if everyone present was wondering what the hells to do next. Human and Myrian and Nuit and Drykas and more exchanged looked, moutyhs slack, faces slathered in sweat... and then...

"VIIIIIIIIIIIIIICTORYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!"

Razkar raised his blood-clotted weapons to Syna, her rays casting red smears dancing across the stones. His lips peeled back and he breathed deep, roaring loud enough for his Goddess-Queen to hear him as he echoed that word. A dozen shouts of the same followed, the air suddenly crammed and echoing with joy and relief and that adrenaline-jittery high of survival.

He didn't remember how long he stood there, waiting for his breath to calm back, his gnosis to burn down and the raging red to leave his eyes. Days and days restricted by the civilization of Syliras... they took their toll on the warmonger, which was pretty much what Razkar was. Finally he closed his eyes... breathed deep a heady bouquet of recent death and dying blood and...

"Victory..."

The Myrian's eyes opened, and he began tying off loose ends.

"The Order thank all of you for your brave and courageous deeds today. You shall be rewarded for your efforts. Meet us at the gates of Syliras, we will make sure Peython give what he promised..."

Razkar nodded absently, eyes and minded not focused on the man anymore. He was sizing up the strip of muscle and sinew that still connected the nearly-severed front right leg to the Balicani carcass. He flipped his ax sideways, a little physical tic he had. One flick, and the head spun sideways, all the way around-

-until he tightened his grip again, curved head facing forward... and then repeat.

"Myrian-" Now Razkar's head snapped around, pausing with his arm half-raised, black eyes taking in the Knight's brief nod of thanks. "Good work, your reputations were right about you."

Razkar nodded back, then went back to his work, Ser Wade's slight frown lost on him. But, the human supposed, civic duty and loyalty wasn't what bought the savage to this gods-blasted stretch of stone. A hefty bounty and the chance for slaughter did... then the Knight glanced at the red-headed female and tucked his head down a little, hiding his smile.

Well... among other things.

One hefty swing from his ax was all it took, and Razkar had his prize. The whole right front leg south of the knee joint (well, the second knee joint, actually) came away in his hand, final strand of muscle hacked away.

For a moment he studied the thing in his hand, long as his arm. The claws alone were four or five inches, straight for the most part but curved at the end like sickles. He tested one's edge... and turned his hand over to see blood welling from the fresh cut there.

"Goddess..."

Possibilities paraded before his eyes and Razkar felt a grin split his face. A necklace, perhaps? An addition to his knuckledusters? A piercing, even? So many, and so much time to decide... not to mention a good poud or two of fresh but probably gamey meat on there, hidden under scales and yellow muscle.

I bet it tastes like Dhani.

He gazed over the rest of the beast but found nothing more that stoked his attention. The claw was enough, and he turned his back on the carcass, walking across the shale-and-corpse strewn clearing... past bodies and gouts of cloying blood... then stopped.

A smear caught his eyes. Like the trail of some vast, disgusting slug, it strained the ground in a fat, clear line for maybe ten feet, aimed at the downed and dead Balicani... with a corpse at the end of it. Razkar leaned down, some part of his blood shouting out that this meant something, this was more than just another corpse. Reaching out with his free hand, he turned the body over.

And it wheezed.

The hunter was dying. Technically, he was already dead; his mind was just too stubborn to follow the body. Blood clotted and dribbled from the human's mouth; his left arm was pulped and sizzling from a spray of venom that had winged him and his belly...

Razkar cursed softly. Innards barely held in by his one remaining hand were pulsing against the man's palm, so bloody and yet... he could see the eerie, deathly paleness through the crimson. Every inch of his skin was parchment... and still he lived. Staring up at the Myrian, steady and implacable...

And he dragged himself across stone. After getting disemboweled. After being crippled. Even then, he wanted to prove himself. He refused to surrender.

"I cannot help you, brother. All I-"

One last rasp, dancing bubbles on his lips... and then the hunter's eyes blew out. His body didn't go limp; it already was. But Razkar knew the soul had gone and left the ravaged body behind.

Razkar was silent for a long chime. Finally his eyes snapped free of those dead marbles planted in the human's deepeyes sockets, roving through the holocaust of damage wreaked upon him... until his eyebrow quirked.

A gladius. Clean and sharp and well-maintained. Razkar felt the hilt of it... well-balanced. Not ostentatious like many sellswords he knew, who seemed to equate "shiny" with "impressive". No, this was simply a sharp piece of metal very well-designed for thrusting, slashing and hacking. It was a fine weapon, and already the avaricious part of Razkar's kind thought up new uses for it.

Your skill with two blades at one time is improving. Better to have the same in either hand, no? With this one in-

"No." The Myrian's voice came out as a whisper, and his eyes returned to the dead human's face. "Not like this. Not from him."

Razkar pressed the handle of the gladius back into the human's cold, stiffening hand and pressed the fingers around it. Then he laid it over his chest... and closed his eyes with two fingers. He knew these barbarian races sometimes put coins on the eyes of the dead, but what need would the dead have for currency? A sword, however...

"You will need this, brother," he whispered in his own tongue, "So the gods know your quality...."

He stood with his brow furrowed against the baking sun, and left the corpse to the wolves and crows. They couldn't hurt him anymore; all that was done, was done... and the rest was in the hands of the gods.

"Always rush to head of things, Edri..."

There were a few odd looks thrown his way at that, like the humans couldn't believe that a Myrian could use softness in his tone or... yes, that certainly sounded like a pet name. Having made his way back to the wagons still waiting for them, Razkar crouched over Edreina, running his eyes over Matthews impromptu but effective bandages... and his hand over her shoulder. Tired but determined blue eyes looked up into his, and he nodded.

"You fought well. And..." Careful but not exactly gentle hands prodded her bruises and tender sides. A few hisses... some juicy Svefra curses... but nothing broken. "... you are not too bad hurt. Can you walk?" A quick, confident nod, and Razkar took her at her word. "Good. Will wait here. You got to beast. Take trophy."

She paused and Razkar smiled indulgently at her, pride and a breathless relief in his eyes. She had taken many risks that day; they'd paid off, but such recklessness... he would have words, that was for sure. But now was not the time for chastisement: he unsheathed his kukri with one easy movement and presented the curved blade to her.

"Go. I wait here."

Chimes passed again in a numberless haze he neither counted nor cared for. The scratches in his back made relaxing in the wagon harder but he managed it, eyes fixed on the Balicani claw in his lap. Idle fingers caressed and inspected the points, marveling at their sharpness. Even the metal-minded geniuses at Sultros Blades would need days, weeks of slaving to create such keeness; and yet, Caiyha gifted these masterpieces with a creature's very birth.

"Well... not anymore..."

Razkar smirked to himself, a little allowance of conceit, as it's weapons now became his weapons, and turned sharply at the shadow falling across the wagon. The pale girl who'd been so lucky and skilled with the grappling hook passed by. Razkar frowned; Goddess, how do you thank someone without knowing their name?! Oh, petch it-

"Mistress?!" At his bark Sagritta stopped briefly, head snapping to the fearsome visage now wreathed in the shadows of the wagon. But instead of the nightmares of her youth, this wraith instead smiled at her (well, OK, that was in her nightmares) and tipped his head with due respect. "Trick with hook and rope? Was... Was thing that made battle for us." Razkar's eyes met hers and a steely, steady respect shone there. She was young; in his race, she would already be a warrior and mother both. He doubted she was the latter here, but now...

"You have made gift to Myri. Show courage, skill... give victory to her. Kill enemy. Razkar of Shorn Skulls was proud to fight with you, Mistress."

Another figure walked past them briefly, a female that was eerily familiar to Razkar. Her manner reminded him so much of Isolde, the Nuit... perhaps... no... no, it couldn't be.

"And my thanks also to you, female." Another bow of his head, such subservient respect to a female perhaps shocking to the barbarians, but all proper and, in fact, demanded from the matriarchy-bred Myrian. "You show gift with flames..."

They moved on and Razkar settled back, having given his thanks. He could have stayed silent, of course, half-hidden in the back of the wagon, and really, what did he owe a bunch of bounty hunters he'd fought with?

The answer was in his manner with that fallen man. The dead needed little from the living... but they were owed respect, and those that survived deserved just the same. Razkar was raised from birth to honor, no, revere martial courage, and all those that tottered and staggered from that cooling carcass had earned it. Those thoughts drifted lightly on his mind until a far more familiar shadow snapped him out of them... and she was the only one that could birth a smile on his lips.

"Ah. Back soon. Did you get good trophy?"

Edreina showed him, but before Razkar could comment-

"It was good fighting alongside you, sir. Impressive your skills are, Razkar."

Such a change within the space of time it took the Myrian to turn. Softness and concern and pride morphed into cold, dead assessment like a mask had been dropped into place. The tall, pale Drykas was addressing them, bow that had struck the death blow of the Balicani still in his hands. Razkar looked him up and down slowly... emotionless...

"And you my dear, need to learn to duck. Still, brave of you to take on that Balicani alone like you did. I hope you heal up quickly."

Sincerity and honesty... Razkar thought he recognized them both, underneath the mirth and kind words. But he didn't comment, just kept his peace and one hand on the hilt of his gladius as the Drykas drifted off. That particular example of the Horse Lords had earned his respect that day; accuracy and fortitude were fine attributes for a warrior.

But he wouldn't forget the two he'd slain on the Kabrin Road forty days before. Two of Goddess knew how many others that had attempted to steal Edreina from him; kidnap and enslave her, despite whatever other justification they may have used.

He listened as the smiling archer congratulated their handsome healer, and once that was over, Razkar finally stood and-

"Horse Lord!" Viper turned quickly, surprised, and saw the Myrian give him a short, purposeful bow. "You fought well. My thanks."

Baby steps. Baby steps...

The Drykas left and now it was Razkar's turn to appraise their healer and unexpected... what was the term? Bard? Goddess, he didn't feel like swapping stories or platitudes. The very sight of Edreina lying on the stone, wincing whenever her lithe form wiggled, bruised and battered... no, this was not the place for her. They needed to get back to the familiar bosom of the 'grotto, where she could heal properly. But...

"Full of surprises, are you not?" Razkar said in that slow, faux-amiable tone of one not fooled or not completely trusting of another, smile showing just enough of his sharpened points to unnerve Matthew. Not that he could really tell, given the inscrutable nature of the healer-whore. "Knew you had touch of wyrd to you, but... in this way? Not expecting that. But... welcome."

He gazed down at his lover, gripping her shoulder and looking back to Matthew with a silent debt writ large and obvious in his wide, pitch-black eyes.

"Very welcome... and not forget soon."

"My knights will be stationed here until all of you have finished looting, they will escort you back. As for me, I shall take this brave lady here for healing."

"No, you will not."

Ser Wade whirled with as much shock as his grizzled expression could muster without looking comical (he had subordinates around, after all). But the Myrian who'd spoken just stared him down, helping Edreina to wriggle between his legs, lying back on one side of the wagon, her head resting on his chest.

"She is my... student." Yes, and I will choose to ignore that satirical eyebrow cock, human. "And I have duty to see she get to city safe. Not you duty. Not argue."

Ser Wade took in this little outburst and felt the tension from his two underlings, flanking him instinctively like they were trained to.

But he also saw the way the Svefra - Edreina, wasn't it? - huddled into the Myrian's musculature like he was a safe and warm mattress for her. The way her body loosened and relaxed, the perfect image of... safety. Security. The words were apt... and so, reassured, the Knight nodded.

"You might consider learning the Common word 'please', Myrian." He rumbled before turning away. "You seem to be learning the rest pretty well."

"My thanks." Razkar said, small smile earning him an acid glance. "Learn that one well enough..."

No further problems, nor conversation, nor need to stay. Razkar settled into bhis seat and had to admit, the idea of a chauffeured rude back to civilization and a long nap into he bargain sounded pretty good. But the prospect of this warm, soft female warming his lap into he bargain...

He leaned down a little to Edreina, voice low and just for her.

"Need you to heal, Edri. Have surprise for you on boat..."

The Myrian turned for a moment, blinking at the bright sun beyond the gloomy wagon interior. He regarded the still and lifeless carcass, hewn and butchered, already being picked over by inquisitive humans. Countless other avian and mammal scavengers would do the same thing that night, ripping and eating and burrowing until within a season... nothing but bleached bones for Syna to bake and wither to dust. The watcher inhaled, trying to feel some vestige of pity or respect.

No. He couldn't. He'd hunted, confronted and killed many predators in his life, and all of them were... instinctive. They hunted to live and thus lived to hunt, were built that way, wired that way. That was how they survived.

But the Balicani? He saw a spark of malevolence in those limpid eyes, some cruel intelligence that set its will to pain, not mere feeding.

It was a blight. They had cured it. Nothing more.

"Go to judgement, and leave not your shade to torment this place further" he muttered in his own tongue, turning his back forever.

My Words | Your Words | Myrian | Fratavan | My Thoughts
Razkar has been cursed by Yahal, and as such finds little acceptance from others; they will instinctively view him as being deceptive and traitorous. However, when close to one blessed by Yahal, the effect is negated. The curse is etched onto his left pectoral, and viewing the mark causes others to feel dirty and unclean.

[The Cobalt Mountains] Monster Hunter

Postby Sagitta on August 23rd, 2013, 1:04 pm

That little stunt of hers had not succeeded as perfectly as she had hoped. When Sagitta had tried to stand up, pain flared from her left leg so intensely that she fell back down with a cry. She must've landed the wrong or something, not that it was such a surprise. True, she had done lots of things like it, but never something this daring. She haven't had the time to calculate everything and an injury was bound to happen. She just wished it had not happened at times like this. Groaning, the girl eyes the twisting mass of serpent on the ground, just as trapped as she was.

By Leth's light, this was not good. She was a runner and with this injury, there was nothing she could do.

The young hunter from earlier had pulled her up with a fair amount of cursing. It was quite nice of him, not leaving her alone. He led her away a bit further before settling her down on the ground. "Stay here. I'll get some help. Here, use this if something came at you." Hastily, he tossed his bow and quiver next to her. Sagitta protested, trying to say that she had no idea how to use it, but he had already left.

The hunter never did came back. Was he dead? Sagitta hoped not. She never even had the chance to thank him. The girl kept in her place though, as the fighting got intense. Her little trick had given everyone else a decent chance to attack at close-range.

The knight had looked straight at her for a second, when he screamed for everyone to charge. Did he expect her to fight? Was he for real? Sagitta could not fight, not even the littlest. She was definitely crazy enough to try something from a distance away, but in such close range, well, she was not so sure.

The Ethaefal watched helplessly, keeping her distance from the fighting. The bow felt awkward in her hands - she didn't even know how to hold it properly. Still, holding up a weapon felt quite reassuring, even if she couldn't defend herself with it. She leaned heavily on the tree, breaths heavy and face pale. Her leg was screaming, but she couldn't stay seated. If something came at her, the blonde haired young woman is certainly a sitting duck, with nothing to fight back with.

Her grappling hook was still stuck on the Balicani and she could not retrieve it for now - unless she wanted to zip through the flying arrows and swinging blades. The only things on her was a dagger and a bow she had no idea how to use. A dagger probably was not the best weapon to use in this situation. That left her the bow - a dead man's bow. Sagitta had seen a bow used before, but she guessed it was not easy as it looked. Alright, you have a weapon, now get moving. What if the monster decided to single you out and kill you for ruining his wing? The simple thought was enough to spur her into action.

Testing her foot, she stood, using a tree trunk as support. It hurts, but it's bearable. She would only be a burden if she came to close now. And that's alright. Sagitta was contend with staying out of the fight. Besides, it seemed like their small band of fighters held their ground well enough already.

Blades crashed with scales. Arrows flew furiously like a petering rain. Explosions. There were screams and shouts and curses and roars. A deep shudder below the ground told her that the Balicani had fell. She had only caught a glimpse of its dying moment, but it was more than enough. Once everything had calmed down, Sagitta headed down to the cheering crowd. They had won. Had won. And they didn't get killed!

There were maybe wonders about how this slight, nimble girl could manage to survive and it would went unanswered. Even the girl wasn't sure what had happened.

At some point, someone came up to her and it took her a few seconds to recognize who it was. Sagitta smiled weakly and nodded at Ser Wade's gratitude. "Thank you, but if it wasn't for everyone, this kind of thing will not be possible." It was a lucky shot and a miracle that she wasn't killed in the process. Still, a part of her was proud for contributing to the fight. She felt quite beaten up, but at least she was alive - along with a few others. Her hands tightened around the bow. There was no sight of the young hunter. He's most certainly dead, then. And all that was left of him was a simply carved shortbow. Even if she couldn't use it, Sagitta decided to keep the weapon, slinging it across her shoulder and hope nobody would mind. The least she could do was keep something to remind her of the stranger who had helped her and died in the process.

After gathering her courage, the Ethaefal limped over to the dead body of the Balicani. She wondered if it was the first one that attacked her or the one that came after. It seemed amazing that this small group of people had succeeded in killing something so big, so mighty. It would've killed them easily if they did not outsmart it.

She retrieved her hook first, not wanting to get a new one just yet. Besides, it was still in a relatively pristine condition. The rope was in not worse shape, still definitely salvageable. These simple tools had helped bring a flying serpent down. She left the wings alone, considering it had been ruined for they were the first targets of archers.

The obvious thing to loot were the scales. Pale, slender fingers slid smoothly over the glistening scales splattered with blood. It was beautiful and horrible at the same time. How many have the creature killed to attract such attention? How many people had had these green scales for their last sight in the world? A bit sorry for this dead creature, the Ethaefal harvested about twenty five of the best ones she set eyes on.

Moving on, Sagitta figured the teeth should be nice trinkets. For what she had know idea, but it will be good reminders. Kneeling down with a cringe, the girl inspected the Balicani's jaw carefully. She knew massive teeth were lined behind the skin, but she wasn't quite sure how she could retrieve it safely. For all she knew, the mouth may still have some kind of acid sack that could burst at a touch. Gingerly, she prodded the lip with the point of her dagger, unsure what to do. It was clear that someone had messed with the teeth before her. With a shrug, she proceeded to take a handful of massive teeth - about ten of them, in fact.

Rios would be ecstatic if he had gotten his hand on these. He had always been excited to discover new things, to research on some rare items for the same of curiosity. Too bad he's dead decades ago, she added bitterly. As much as she was Sagitta, the Ethaefal, she was still Arivia, the girl madly in love until her death. It's tearing her apart, knowing about a life she did not remember living.

When Ser Wade had told them to leave, Sagitta had rigorously complied. She wanted to leave as fast as possible. Her eyes had started to spot dead bodies of the other volunteers. People who had been standing around her merely bells ago. They were dead. All dead. What of their family? Friends? Will someone tell them that their loved ones died in an attempt to hunt down a monster? That they fought barely, even if it wasn't enough.

Along with the others, she descended carefully. The road going down felt heavy. They had succeeded with such a high cost. Only ten people left - about half of what they started with.

Something blunt slammed against his jaw, and he didn't even resist. He hit the ground like a sack of potatoes, though still wide awake. His body was just slack because he simply didn't care. He laid there on the ground, staring up at the sky, and all he really wanted to do was sing again. There was something that it did to him that he had liked. He slowly opened his lips, wanting to feel that surge of emotion.

Sharp teeth dug into his mind right as Edreina grabbed him, the harlot wincing sharply from the sudden sensation of both. Then he was finally back, the fog clearing from his mind. He glanced around, regaining his senses and figuring out where everything was. The fire-head was eyeballing him, the monster was down, and everyone was handing out thanks. His eyes ran over a few of the dead bodies, but his expression didn't really change. He didn't feel sorrow for them. It was a natural and predictable conclusion that any one of them could have suffered from. He was certainly thankful for their sacrifice. More people had meant more targets for the creature, which had turned out to be a good thing. Taking a few deep breaths as he settled down, he thought back over his brief episode of overgiving. He had felt the tear in hs body when he had pushed himself beyond the reaches of his skill. He could have to keep that in mind. At least he now knew his limit, and was aware of the sensation within his body whenever he began to approach that limit.

A small nod was given to Ser Wade at the thanks. Matthew didn't have much to say. He wasn't suited for this sort of thing, but he would give anything a try. He had now given it a try, and wouldn't have to try it again. Viper was given a small nod as well, though Matthew's sharp blue eyes lingered a bit longer in a focused stare. He wasn't at all offended by the thought that he couldn't assist much. However, the implied knowledge of what Matthew had done did put the harlot on his guard. Most people didn't know much about magic beyond the fact that it existed. They might even know the different schools, but the harlot had found that they rarely knew the effect of the schools. He would have to remember to be more subtle about it next time, even in a life or death situation. He held his magic close to his heart. Whatever the case, he still gave the man a firm handshake from his position on the ground, a polite smile touching to his full lips. He hopefully didn't come off as rude. He was simply quiet and thoughtful. Then there was Razkar, who received the same glittering stare. Full of surprises, was he? The blue eyes only glittered more. It certainly wasn't a surprise any longer. Still, he couldn't help but flinch back just a bit at the sight of Razkar's teeth.

Hadn't he just faced some massive lizard-bat-thing? Summoning up some sort of courage that was probably left over from his magic, he bared his own teeth in a sharp and sudden attempt at a vicious grin. "You fight like a tiger woman. I wasn't very impressed." That was very much a lie. Really, he didn't know the meaning of the Myrian phrase that well, so he could even be paying the man a compliment. He wouldn't soon forget the whirlwind of steel. Groaning as he climbed to his feet, he shot a glance over at Edreina. "And she fights like... not tiger woman. More like..." He stared at the two of them, trying his very hardest to figure out some sort of funny thing to say. He was pretty sure this was the time for it. "uh... more like... tiger beaver." He stared awkwardly at the both of them for a little bit, then bowed his head and mumbled out a thanks for what Edreina had done. His jaw throbbed, reminding him about the jarring blow. With a polite smile to the two friends, he moved on, heading over to Isolde. A careful glance ran over her newest body. Reimancy made him nervous. He could see she was pawing through her pack frantically, and on her hand... Tanroa, she had burned her hand. She had burned it badly. He automatically winced at the sight, dropping to a knee to inspect it. If she tried to pull anything out of her pack, he slapped her hand away, glowering a bit at her. "Didn't you just get this body? You need to treat it better." His other sleeve was ripped off, and quickly wrapped around her hand. He applied just enough pressure to it, and then tied it off with the knot placed over where the ichor could seep through. Rustling through his own bag, he produced his water skin, pushing it into her good hand. "Pour the cool water over it in a slow drizzle, just enough so that you can feel the coolness. Reapply when you feel it getting warm again. Do you want any trinkets from the corpse?"

A quick trip would be taken over to the dead beast. He felt neither pity or disgust, and glanced over at the other survivors to see what they were collecting. He carefully snapped off about a dozen scales for himself, meticulous about getting clean and unblemished ones. He did the exact same with any loose teeth he found, taking care not to cut himself or touch any potential acid. He would try and sell all but one scale and one tooth when he returned. He would also fetch whatever Isolde needed, and then when she was ready, help her to the others in order for them to all walk back home. Searching out Sagitta in the crowd, he would silently bring him and his partner to her side, a critical eye checking her for any injuries as well. Noticing her favoring the one leg, he furrowed his brow and stared at her. "I'll look at that when we get back to Syliras. At least we got our revenge, eh? Wonder if the other is still out there."

He didn't mean to be pessimistic, it just came out. It wasn't anything worth worrying about right now, though he couldn't help but cast a quick glance around. He'd feel much better when he was in the safe city walls.

"You fought well. And... you are not too bad hurt. Can you walk?"

Edreina nodded once, smiling slightly. Se knew she could walk, but the pain in her hip made it nigh on impossible for her to do anything more strenuous.

"Good. Will wait here. You got to beast. Take trophy."

A glance at Matthew showed that he was awake and cognizant, well at least as far as she could tell with that twice-damned blank-face he always wore. Either way, she wanted to get her things and get out of there. With a groan, the Svefra used the tree she had drug Matthew behind to stand, wobbling slightly now that her adrenaline had quieted and her muscles were weak with exhaustion. After a moment, she walked along the treeline to where she had stashed her rucksack. At the sight of all the leaves and various plant life spilling from the bag, the redhead's mane danced from side to side as she shook her head. What the petch had she been thinking?

Silly female.

The woman started an instant before she realized just how good her mental impersonations of Razkar were getting. As she made her way back towards the carcass, Edreina paused, eyes on a female archer that had been hurled by the beast at some point during the fight. Her body was twisted and mangled, bent in ways not even a master contortionist would attempt, shock of honey blond hair pooled behind her. Sightless amber eyes gazed upon the face of Dira. She was one of the hunters that had fought and died at the hands of the Balicani, all for mizas. Edreina sighed and would have closed the poor woman's eyes but she knew that they would just pop open again, and that was why the dead were given two silver mizas to place over their eyes. "May you sail upon more peaceful seas," Edreina whispered in Fratavan; her native tongue was so lilting and rhythmic that any passerby could have mistaken it for a song.

She walked away without looting the body - I need not anything she has. - stuffing her whip into her pack the best that she could manage. This had been a petched venture to begin with, but Edreina knew that the world was better off without this Balicani. Perhaps the one that steals this territory will be smarter and avoid the murderous, scale-and-wingless two-legs. Either way, the Balicani's corpse will one day lay in the grass, bones bleached and brittle, scales but a phantom of their former glory, a monument to the courage of the fortress-dwelling people below.

As she approached the heap of serpentine flesh, Edreina passed the kukri from palm to palm, lip bitten as her thoughts roamed over the carcass. The teeth would make a cool necklace or something of that sort, so Edreina knelt and knocked a handful loose. Later that day, she would enclose each one in a small note and send them to her parents, Zindr and Surai, along with Uleru, if she could be found. She personally had no interest in wearing something so sharp around her neck, she was far too accident prone. So instead she pried off a few of the larger scales, the ones that ran along the creature's spine, and stuffed them into her pack. Finally she stood, eyeing the wings. They were too small and damaged to be of much use to her ship, using them as a sail would just be... Odd.

Were she more skilled, she Svefra would take a bone from the beast and carve a tale into it for future generations. But, what she had was enough to remember her less than minimal involvement. Smiling as she walked to join the party as they began their trip back to the wagons, Edreina felt an odd sort of peace settle over her now that this day was complete.

Their journey to the wagons went much more quickly than that which they made into these mountains. For one, they moved less warily, everyone was aching to get home instead of hesitant to face the monster. For two, were able to make a bee-line back to the Evantide outpost instead of searching the mountains. All the while, Edreina's battered body screamed at her. In an attempt to shut it up, or at least mute it, Edreina remembered the time she had dove into the Suvan to swim with a passing whale pod. In her youthful folly, she had swam too close to a calf and was... Chastised by the mother. A fully grown whale's fluke hurt far worse, even if said whale had only tapped the Svefra lightly. Petching thing still hit hard enough to knock the redhead out of the water.

The memory of her mottled black and blue and violet flesh - in patterns even an Otani would never attempt - somehow managed to make her hip feel just a bit better. Somewhat. Kind of. Well, not really... But she could pretend, aye?

At the sight of the wagons, the redhead all but sagged with relief. Finally the sense that she had survived the day, that she would be able to return home and have a nice, long, undisturbed sleep settled over her and with it came a true sense of peace.

That was, of course, until the Drykas and his beast strode over. Memories of earlier in the season - being thrown over a horse's back, the feel of it galloping beneath her and that she would never again see her beloved Suvan - jarred her mind an habitually quickened her breath. She still wanted to know what had driven them to such lengths. But this Drykas... He was different. She had seen him fight alongside Razkar, and now the Myrian was letting him approach. And so she only shrank mildly against her lover's side, mainly because of the horseman's monster, but somehow managed to smile. Old fears died hard.

"And you my dear, need to learn to duck. Still, brave of you to take on that Balicani alone like you did. I hope you heal up quickly."

When he addressed her, the little Svefra grinned broadly. Okay so he was not too bad... Still stank of horse, though. "I did only what was necessary, and what was within my abilities. And hey, I did manage to duck the first time. But thank you. You fought well and your aim was true."

It looked as if the harlot was going to ride back in the same wagon as the savage and the sailor, or came to say goodbye at the very least. She startled them both by stepping forward and embracing the harlot quickly, but firmly. He had come to her aid, after all. "Sorry about your face..." she joked with a grin, stepping back towards the wagon. "The women will love it though, promise ya that." Still smiling, Edreina moved to follow Razkar into the wagon, eager to have the rough and bumpy trip over with and be back upon the gently swaying Suvan.

"My knights will be stationed here until all of you have finished looting, they will escort you back. As for me, I shall take this brave lady here for healing."

"No, you will not."

The red haired woman would probably have burst into laughter at the knights words had Razkar not pulled her into his lap as he cut in. The motion was possessive and definitive, but it still managed to surprise Edreina. The two had, by unspoken consent decided to keep their affection in public to a minimum, as should be obvious to all around by now. So when he stated his claim so boldly, she flushed with pleasure and automatically adjusted her body to rest better against his. Lithe and pale rested against dark and hulking in an embrace so natural they could have been the same two-toned entity.

So of course the knights left them alone; the warrior deserved a moment of peace with his female. The knight Edreina had saved lingered for an instant, puzzling over how to best thank the Svefra. Finally, he nodded gruffly and went off to continue his duties.

In the silence of them waiting for departure, to begin their journey back to Syliras, Edreina rolled onto her side, removing as much pressure from her grumbling bruise as she could. Her arms were brought up to her chest, fingers resting in the warmth between her neck and the Myrian's chest. Perhaps this time she would be able to sleep a bit better...

"Need you to heal, Edri. Have surprise for you on boat..."

Of course. The moment she started to relax he just had to go and create a whole new kind of tension. I was the kind that made Edreina wiggle slightly in his arms, teeth upon her lower lip and blue eyes dancing with a new light. Gods woman... He growls about a surprise and immediately your mind goes to that? He could just mean a- Well either way. You're in for a relatively long, annoying, and crowded carriage ride. Better calm down and think about it later...

So, with an annoyed huff, she settled down and curled up in the arms of her lover, basking in the fact that they had both survived this foolhardy venture. Eventually, she managed to nod off and drift into a light sleep.

Things were passing in something of a blur. The Nuit was aware that the noises of battle had dimmed and then gone eerily quiet, she was aware of the moment of stunned hesitation and then the victory roar, the sound rough and triumphant, upped on adrenaline and relief... but really all she cared about was fucking finding a wrap for her hand.

Unfortunately, she was having a hard time of it, and an even worse time concentrating. Her palm was burning in places as if it was still on fire; well, where the feeling hadn't crisped away into absolutely nothing. The pain was enough that she found herself quite distracted from her task. She was having a terrible time collecting herself, thinking what to do. Generally the Nuit considered herself relatively 'good' at this sort of thing. She wasn't skilled medically, but she was adequate for most of her needs. She knew about compresses, about pressure, how to clean and wrap and even stitch a wound. All of that was a lot harder, though, when you were limited to one hand, and when your other kept up a relentless screaming that frayed at your nerves.

Probably that sensation was one she was going to fast become well-acquainted to.

At one point in an indefinable amount of time --could have been fifteen years, fifteen chimes, or fifteen ticks, there was no difference-- someone approached the Nuit. Shining, clanking armor and an authoritative tone... one of the Knights, then. He said something that sounded a bit far away to her ears, and the Nuit muttered back what she thought must be an appropriate response, offering out a weak smile. He went away, and she went back to staring unthinkingly at her palm.

A little more time passed; she was certain it wasn't much. Perhaps a chime. Another person came over. Isolde had managed to galvanize herself into action once again, had returned to trying to dig through her knapsack, looking --and not finding-- anything to act as a wrap for her wound... and a hand flashed down and slapped at her. Startled, the Nuit looked up.

It was Matthew. She didn't know why his presence should reassure her. It did. She silently held out her palm and let him tend to it, staying listlessly where she had been when he'd approached, shoulders slumped. When he held out a waterskin and gave directions, she simply accepted both, closing her knapsack with fumbling fingers and draping it over her shoulders once more.

Something her partner said broke through to the Nuit, giving her pause. Gather trinkets from the-- the corpse--?

"Oh. Yes. Let's-- go." That voice was too faint to be hers. She worked on solidifying it as they headed towards the felled serpent. Her next words were stronger. "You're alright, aren't you?" There was something about his own voice that gave her reason to question him. Perhaps it came across as huskier than normal, as if his vocal chords had been strained. And-- And there was blood, wasn't there? Yes, there, didn't it look like some had been wiped from his chin? Regardless, she most definitely caught the trickle that had spotted his shirt in dulling red droplets. There was no obvious source of injury. Was it someone else's? "You haven't hurt yourself, have you?" Somehow, that question seemed more accurate than another she could have posed: You haven't been hurt, have you? Just... the one she had asked seemed more significant to her, though she had no idea why.

Whatever the reason, her companion's response was lost to her as she jostled her own injured hand --speaking of hurting oneself-- and it flared up in bright white agony. She focused on keeping her hand from swinging freely, then, as she normally would have let it, wetting it down with more of the cool, merciful water as Matthew had prescribed.

They made it to where their adversary lay defeated.

Standing over the Balicani was... odd, for the Nuit. Most dead things she saw were dead people, people that she would soon, well-- bodies that she would soon desecrate for her own selfish purposes. Seeing this behemoth lay where it had fallen, still glittering in the sun, scales casting a glorious green pattern of lights on all who neared... it was hard to describe.

Seeing the living picking over its corpse was even more so. She didn't know what she should think about it. This was an animal. A creature to be feared and abhorred, labeled in life as a monster. It was not a person. Its body shouldn't matter to her. She had never once in her life been adverse to killing animals, as long as there was a purpose in mind. Living as a farmer, that had been part of everyday life. Slaughtering cows, chickens, pigs, and even hunting deer and squirrels and the like... all of that was necessary for people to be properly fed or paid, food to be stored or sold. Killing the Balicani she had had no qualms with; it had infringed on the safety of too many innocent souls, attacking those that were simply trying to live their lives. It was a menace. It needed to be killed. Isolde might have fancied herself a pacifist, might have been squeamish while dealing with the violence of men. This, though, was an entirely different matter. Completely unrelated. She had no scruples.

But picking over its body. Somehow the act just seemed off to her, in bad taste. There was no logic to what she was experiencing. She knew it might be considered worse to leave the corpse untouched, wasted. Still... she was reluctant.

Until, that was, she thought of those that had died. Her eyes unwillingly strayed around to a field bloodied and muddied, strewn with dead or dying men, limbs rended apart and flesh literally melted into nothing.

Matthew had offered to retrieve what she wanted. Isolde quickly went through a tally, numbers stacking up in her mind, confusing since she was still having a hell of a time concentrating... "Please. Some of the scales. I think-- I think twenty should do." At the last moment she hesitated, then added on, "And, if it's not too much trouble, a tooth." One of the scales would be for her. The tooth, as well. She couldn't really bring herself to watch as he pried the trophies from the body, and so kept her eyes pointed at the ground, not much interested in revisiting the carnage all around.

These men, these women. Would their bodies be left here to rot in the sun and to be eaten by wild animals? Where was the closure for their families, for the ones they had left behind? What would they receive as recompense, what gratitude would the city of Syliras offer them now in the face of their loss?

Eventually shining scales --pretty things that shone like sparkling emeralds-- were held out to her, along with one incredibly sharp, gnarled tooth. She tucked one scale and the tooth into a pocket of her knapsack. The rest she kept out, balanced in her grip as she wandered her way, side-by-side with Matthew, over towards the others.

The lead Knight, where was he? Ser... Ser Wade, was that what he'd called himself? She'd paid little attention earlier, and now with her head buzzing from her hand, she couldn't recall. No matter. She knew him by sight, and strode over. Held out the remaining scales for him to take, if he would.

"Ser. Please. I know this may not be part of your duties, and I apologize for any inconvenience my request might cause. But I would appreciate it if one of these scales found it to each of the families of the men and women who were-- were killed, this day. Something to act as proof that their loved ones contributed to something real and meaningful. Something that will hopefully help with the grief and pain that they will most surely feel." She took a deep breath. "Also. I do hope that you have it worked out with our-- our--" Gods, words were failing her. She couldn't think straight. What was it that she was trying to say? What was that word? The Nuit cast a hopeless glance to Matthew before managing to work out, "Well. With that man, the one who's paying us. Our employer--? I hope that you will encourage him to give the families the 200 GM that their loved ones had been promised. Please. Make certain he compensates for their loss. After all. Pay was promised to all of those that participated, not only to those who managed to survive."

...There. Maybe she had accomplished something. The Knight before her seemed
--from what she could tell-- like a good person. Knights were good people, in general. They had to be. Kindness was woven into their order, though it may not seem like it at times. Hopefully this man would agree with her requests, would sympathize with those who had fallen and their families and would make certain that those affected would be properly cared for. The Nuit couldn't do any of that herself. She couldn't track down those who had lost someone today. She couldn't expect her presence to be comforting to one who desperately needed solace. There was nothing she could do on that front. But perhaps this Ser, or one like him, perhaps they might be accepted.

Without much else to say, the Nuit walked away.

The rest of the journey was uneventful, as far as she could tell. There was a lot of trekking back to Evantide, and there was a lot of stinging, sizzling pain and discomfort from her palm. She tried to ignore it as best she could. Her head was still not right, though. Learning to deal with such a wound would probably take a while. It was not something she was looking forward to.

Then they were being loaded back up into the wagons and transported to Syliras. The Nuit remained silent if not spoken to, her thoughts turned inward, one hand clutched tightly, painfully, in the other.

Notes :
Wohooooo! Amazing everyone! :D  Excellent job! I really enjoyed threading with all you. :)

Now enjoy the rewards! Since some of you didn't specify on exactly how many scales and teeth picked, I used my own judgement. :)

You can sell them, fashion them into accessories, malediction stuffs, make them into weapons, up to you! :D

Looking forward to see you on our next quests! :D
