AppearanceRace: Charoda
Gender: Female
Age: 23
Birthday: 37, Summer, 489
Birthplace: Charbosi
Appearance: Standing at 5'1" and weighing 110 pounds, Nyael is a rather petite Charoda and often uses this to her advantage when scavenging in particularly cramped quarters. While underwater, her skin is a creamy teal color. The webbing between her digits, the points on her ears, and the tips of her dorsal fins darken into a hunter green. Various shades of cyan mottle her back and a pine green freckle her shallow cheeks. Under direct sunlight, Nyael's skin appears to be a more uniform teal with a pearlescent sheen to it.
Like other Charoda, Nyael is an ardent collector of seashells, pebbles, peals, and any shiny metals. While she stores most of her treasures in chests and display cases at home, some are strung together and worn as a netted headwrap.
She wears a thick chocolate brown cloak made of heavy cotton to help retain moisture throughout the day. Underneath, she wears a fuchsia blouse and cream colored peasant skirt decorated with small seashells along the trim
Character ConceptPersonality
While her family is interested in the world, both below and above the water, none share her desire to actually leave home and explore. Gossip and rumors sate their curiosity as her family had heard stories of the brutality found on the surface world--stories which were followed with a firm warning to stay away. Nyael would not be scared away by these stories. Nyael likes to think of herself as worldly and not just open-minded but progressive. She believes that the future of the Charoda race would be on land and that embracing isolationism was backwards thinking. Little does she know how big the world really is.
This untempered idealism had been cultivated by Belo, a Charoda who filled her head with dreams of adventuring before departing himself. He has never been heard from again. In her naiveté, Nyael imagines him gallantly trekking across country on land horses and making dozens of friends along the way. It is, however, more likely that he has been eaten by a Myrian.
Like other Charoda, Nyael is a pacifist, deferring to diplomacy in any altercation. This does not mean Nyael will let herself be pushed around...or so she would like to think as she has yet to find herself in a situation that tests her mettle.
Likes & Dislikes
In general, Nyael likes to collect random trinkets and invent stories about their origin. Her call to life lies in studying and caring for plants. She wants to collect and study as many foreign plants native to the surface world as she can. She is particularly interested in the tropical plants of Falyndar but fears encountering the Myrian and Dhani.
Despite growing up in a large family, she feels uncomfortable around crowds and loud noises. It is this discomfort of crowds that unconsciously drove her to undertake her solo ventures. She is also not half as smart as she thinks she is. Though she tries to hide it, it is easy to see that she has lived a very sheltered life in Charbosi.
Character HistoryNyael's parents were, for lack of a better phrase, prolific breeders. They believed it was every Charoda's duty to contribute to the growth of Charoda progeny in any and every way possible to restore the Charoda nation to its former glory. Of her 34 siblings, Nyael was the second youngest, and even though she never felt unloved by her parents, she often found herself a touch neglected by them and her elders.
Not that she was one to complain. Nyael would often sneak out alone to explore the ocean floor, skipping school and breaking curfew without a second thought. Coming from a family of 36, Nyael relished the quiet serenity of solitude.
On her own, she found the time to hone her coral manipulation skills without any interruptions. She started working with young coral, meticulously shaping the small sprigs of exoskeleton into dainty structures. Slowly, she worked her way to manipulating larger corals into makeshift shanties, totally exhausting her arms.
She also familiarized herself with indigenous plants and kept a garden of plants she had carefully transplanted. Nyael was keen on colorful flowering plants and would gather them together in bouquets to gift to friends and family. These bouquets were particularly useful after angering her parents or annoying her siblings.
She would often visit her eldest sister, Yves, who was her best friend and confidante. Yves, like their parents, had found her mate early in life and moved with him to his farm. Here, Nyael furthered her knowledge of various aquatic plants and would share her latest discoveries with her sister. However, duties of motherhood drove a wedge between Yves and Nyael. Once Yves laid her first pouch of eggs, she found less and less time to spend with Nyael and eventually began pushing Nyael to focus on her schooling and to spend less time by herself.
A chance encounter with Belo, a slightly older Charoda, during one of Nyael's excursions opened her eyes to the surface world. He spoke of the different races learning to live together harmoniously and exotic foods and vibrant,
aromatic plants. Since then, Nyael returned to the classroom with the sole intention to learn the Common tongue so that she could begin her journey in Riverfall or even Syliras.
