As always, Vira woke with Syna. She never quite knew how she knew the sun was rising, but every day as the first rays peeked over the far horizon of the surrounding peaks, the teenager knew. And with the dawn, she rose and she dressed in her the black vinati and bryda she favored for working in the aeries. Her sontav was donned and Tulaj whistled down from his perch over the doorway, the albino harrier stirring with her and descending to land with claws anxious to get on with the day.

Except, today was slightly different. Two days ago, a teacher from the Yasi quarter had approached the nesting attendant, talking long with the one-eyed woman about taking on a couple of students who'd been asking for some skills training in falconry. The tutor had tried some of the Avora already, the go-to usually for this kind of thing, but none of them were available at the present time. The only reason Vira had been approached now was because of her own skill with birds. She was verging on an expert level and it made her an ideal individual for the younger generation to learn from.

Vira had been surprised, to begin with, since she had no teaching skill whatsoever. Her knack of communication with the birds was the biggest thing and the teacher hoped it would translate into being able to also communicate with the two youth she'd be assisting. So, with not as much begrudgement now, Vira agreed and told the tutor to have the two meet her for their second skills course after lunch bell down in Thunder Bay, on the Mud Flats. She would arrange for the use of two of the birds from the main falconry aeries for the pair since Tulaj was way too stubborn to be trusted for the youth.

She also arranged for a pair of training gloves for the kids, the bedraggled leather gloves nothing like the sleek sontav Chiet and higher wore but better and more effective at protecting a falconers hand than the cheaper, lower-class lontav. Vira also brought along her spare jesses and hoods, borrowing two perches from the aeries and acquiring a pair of Dek to help her transport the gear and birds to the flats.

With this on her mind, Vira headed up to the nesting aeries to see to the mama birds like usual. Each cavelet was cleaned, each bird fed and socialized in the usual way the teenager provided (Mohya and Heshvala given special attention), and then the two hatchling's seen to. The pair of young, down-covered broodlings were growing quick and had at last begun to show off their personalities. Vira loved it and loved seeing the growth in the birds, though she knew that before long the birds would be fledging and leaving the cave to setup their own unit within the greater colony. And that meant her opportunity at imprinting with one would end. These thoughts were not on her mind now, though; Vira had other chores to see to.

Finishing with the eagles, the woman headed for the main aeries to pick up the two red-tail hawks she was borrowing. Both birds were recently fledged, she'd been told (and given the appearance of lingering down, this proved true) and had not been imprinted. They were not yet let to free fly, however, which would prove to the two Yasi she'd be meeting with a challenge. The hawks would be wild enough to force the pair to focus but handlable enough for Vira to take over if things got out of hand. Once the hawks were caged, Vira sent the two Dek helping her ahead with them and the perches while she went to collect her jesse's and treat bag along with some meat from the kitchens that would serve as treats. This would be cut up there at the kitchens so that they were bite size, small enough to reward but not fill the birds up.

Last of all, she went to the crafts gallery to seek out one of the falconry suppliers to obtain a pair of feed sticks the treats could be put on, promising their return after she was done. Finally, as the 10th bell approached, she was ready to head to the Bay. It was going to take a couple hours to walk down there anyways. She'd use the time to let Tulaj free fly for a while, maybe he could catch himself a meal en route and not be a distraction to the two hawks. The raptor was notoriously ornery, after all.

OOCYa'll can just post meeting up at the flats if you want :)

[Mud Flats] Passing on the flame of Knowledge

Postby Akule on August 17th, 2013, 8:06 pm

Akule sat in his last class of the day, religion. It was one of his least favorite subjects but he thanked the gods that the class was nearly finished. He allowed his head to rest lazily in the palm of his hand as he anxiously waited for the teacher to announce the magic words Class...you are dissmissed. She had been going on about a test they would be taking at the end of the week. She continued informing that class that if anyone needed extra help they should come to her at the end of class. Teachers were very busy so chances were she would find available tutors to help the students. He quickly sat up straight when it appeared that she had been done speaking, but the teacher stood at the front of the classroom scratching her head as if there was something else she wanted to say. The moments felt like hours as Akule sat still waiting. He acted as if his movement would remind the teacher of what she was trying so hard to remember. After a few more moments she finally made up her mind and dismissed the class.

Akule nearly jumped out of his seat with joy the moment he heard the last syllables pronounced from her lips. Of course he was the first student standing. He stood there awkwardly as the teacher and other classmates stared at him, as if he had done something wrong. Suddenly everyone had come to their senses and began packing up to go about day rest of their day. Akule quickly stuffed his school books and other important things into his bag, he would have been done sooner but was forced to pull everything out and put it back in neatly so that everything would fit. He looked up at a friend who sat beside him and said"Is my hair still red? I swear I wouldn't be surprised if its grey now. he gave out a soft chuckle and waited for the boys response. Nothing came, obviously he didn't get the joke. Akule rolled his eyes, and left the classroom.

Earlier that day one of the teachers Akule had asked for further instructing in Falconry stopped him in the tunnels. She explained that there was a tutor available to give him and one other student a lesson. He was told to be at Thunder Bay at the end of lunch. Today Akule decided to skip lunch and get an early start on the journey to the meeting location. He wasn't very hungry anyway since he had eaten a large breakfast. Akule tried to imagine the bird he would be training with, or the question the instructor might ask. He quickly gathered all facts he could remember. The last thing he wanted to do was embarrass himself and look like a fool in front of the other student. He was a great listener, and somewhat observant. He had a knack for picking up things at a faster pace than most. This was important to him, if he could learn just a bit more he would buy his own bird and train hard. Akule's thoughts quickly changed, first showing visions of learning and knowledge to, him owning a red-tail hawk and watching it soaring high above him. Oh what a joyous sight this was. Akule felt his lips curling into a smile and quickened his walking pace. He was so excited that anyone watching him walk by would think he just bonded with a Wind Eagle. "Akule and his Wind Eagle" he thought. At this point he was practically jogging through the cave inlets. He quickly walked across the Inner Warrens and found another inlet. So used to traveling these routes Akule had no problem navigating through the giant maze. He wouldn't go as far as exaggerating he could do it with his eyes closed...cause he couldn't, but he was quick enough to get through it in no longer then 25 chimes.

Akule could see the sunlight pouring into the corridor. As he mad his way to the entrance he raised his arm to shade his soft green eyes, allowing them adjust to the new lighting. Blinded for a moment Akule's eyes focused and gave sight of a beautiful view. He could see Thunder Bay from where he stood. He closed eyes for a moment and took in a deep breath of the sweet outside air. He exhaled slowly and took his first step toward the bay. Today was going to be a good day, he could feel it.

Aose was in the middle of yanking arrows out of a target when she paused and took note to the sun’s position in the sky, she remembered she had a blasted training session today with the falcons. She didn’t mind the lovely birds at all; it was the instructors she usually couldn’t stand. With a grunt Aose had yanked the last of her arrows out, examining the tips before she slide them pointy side down into her quiver.

“I probably ought to finish up here and head out. I don’t want to be yelled at for not being reasonably on time.” She grumbled as she pushed down on one of the bow’s arms, this releasing the built in tension that was part of the design of a composite. Straining to keep the bow from smacking her in the face Aose had to throw her body into the compression as she slide a foot hard against the bottom arm to steady herself and the bow before rolling the string’s loop over and off the tip of the bow’s arm. With a sigh of relief Aose allowed her bow to spring back into its basic shape sans string. Leaning the bow against her body the yasi girl coiled the string up and slide it safely into the pocket on the side of her quiver before sliding the bow itself into the quiver to be nestled between the near two dozen arrows she owned.

Shouldering the quiver with her archery supplies Aose turned from the target, missing her ‘friend’ already she strolled off of the range and in the direction of the mud flats. Ignoring the flow of traffic and pedestrians Aose stumbled past deks cleaning, young yasi’s playing ‘Lick the Dek’, and others of the higher castes.

It took her nearly a bell to reach the Mud Flats, standing there was a lady and a bird. Both looked familiar, but then again at this distance Aose couldn’t tell one adult from another… Well, besides Kovac. Getting closer she saw the distinct swatch of scarring about one eye. Petch. She gritted her teeth and stopped a few feet from her instructor.

“It seems we meet again… ya and yer grumpy bird. No errands to run today?” Aose gave a small smirk. That’s when she realized there was a second yasi there, a young boy. “’Ello there. Aose.” She held out a hand, using the other to hold on to her quiver strap.

The Chiet had arrived just after twelfth bell to find the two Dek gone and the two birds in the cages looking fairly unhappy as they hung their wings and panted with beaks open. "Oh for petch sake..." The teen grumbled, donning a glove on her unbound arm and approaching the cages. She opened the door and freed the first hawk, a jess attached to its foot first and letting it step comfortably onto her hand. "...Oughta have those two flogged for leaving you pair out here like this." She continued to grumble about their well-being as she moved the perches towards some medium tide-brush on the flats that would serve as some shade while she waited for the Yasi to arrive. The other bird was handled in the same fashion, both now safely secured on their respective perches.

Footfalls sloshing through the silt of the flats exposed by low tide drew her attention for a moment, the woman turning towards the sound and squinting, one hand shielding her seeing eye towards the tree-line where she knew the path was. There was a boy who appeared, thick of jaw and high of forehead with all the excitement of his age clearly written on his speckled face. He might prove to be a challenge teaching. Excitement and birds did not mix well. It took a calm hand and even tone to address an un-imprinted bird. Turning away from the arriving lad, she turned her eyes to the sky, searching for Tulaj. He'd be somewhere overhead, Vira knew, but would he show her up by not coming or would he listen for once?

Speaking briefly to the youth, her blind side turned away, she said, "We'll wait for the other that's coming to get here first, and then we'll get started. Just hang out for now, ok? I hope you ate something before coming; we're gonna be here a couple hours at the minimum."

She turned back to the pair of red-tails next and bent to check their jesse's, offering each a bit of meat from the treat bag to discourage aggressive behavior. About that time, Aose arrived and the screech of a harrier rang out overhead. Vira straightened with the sound, turning monocular sights upwards and splitting her lips to give a loud and long whistle that descended in pitch.

The Chiet turned now to look upon the duo that was present before tensing at the sight of that bratty Yasi she'd met end of Spring this year. Figures I'd get the snot. She thought off-hand then sighed.

Vira never covered the blind eye, though she never quite knew why she should. Why hide what is, right? Then the kid spoke.

With tightened embouchure, the woman extended her arm before her, sparing no glance to the sky this time as the harrier dove, extending his legs seconds before and landing heavy upon the Chiet's sontav-wrapped forearm. "Yea, well me and my grumpy bird are your teacher for this afternoon." The albino bird which had landed gave a shriek at the two kids, his head bobbing menacingly and his tail splayed wide over his keepers arm as he taunted the two. "So listen up, or get out. If you leave, you fail your marks for the day. Just keep that in mind." The woman supplemented, then looked to the young man. "And who are you? I'm afraid the tutor didn't give me names for the pair I'd be teaching this afternoon. Honestly, how do you guys tolerate it?" Vira rolled her eyes a slight, moving her free hand towards the waiting bird to offer up the bit of meat which had been fetched from the treat bag.

Once introductions were out of the way, Vira got down to business. "Aose, put your quiver in the shade by the perches. You're not gonna be shooting anything out here. We're just going over the basics this afternoon anyways. You won't be free-flying any birds. So, come get these gloves and put them on. You two will be working with Red tail hawks. Do you know anything about birds?" She hoped so, they lived in Wind Reach afterall.

[Mud Flats] Passing on the flame of Knowledge

Postby Akule on August 19th, 2013, 11:19 pm

After a few bells Akule finally arrived to Thunder Bay. He scanned the area not sure what exactly he was looking for. Akule would be meeting his instructor soon and had no idea what to expect. Would they be old, and stern? Would they resemble their birds? Or instead be young, cheerful and patient? He sure did hope for the third one.

Soon he was able to make out a figure out in the distance. He continued walking not taking his eyes off the person trying to get a better look, but they had been standing with their back toward him. The stranger must have heard his footsteps because suddenly they had turned and looked directly at him. Finally he could see it was a girl...rather a young woman. Her hair was naturally ginger, with soft facial features to compliment it. She did not smile or frown; only looked. For a brief moment he caught sight of the a scar over her right eye and made a mental note to himself "Whatever you do, just don’t stare". Although his twelve year old mind was curious and he couldnt help but wonder what had happened. Just as quickly as she turned to look at him she was looking away again. This time her gaze was pulled toward the sky. Now only a few feet from the girl he too looked toward the sky to see what she was looking at. Akule scanned the sky slowly but saw nothing. He couldn’t help but wonder if perhaps he had arrived late.

Looking back toward the young woman Akule opened his mouth to ready to apologize for his lateness, but she spoke first. Akule rubbed his belly and sighed softly. The trip was longer then he expected. The distance combined with the hot temperature had left him a little hungry, and really thirsty. He hadn't brought any food but did have his water with him. It should quench his thirst and add a little fullness to his belly. "Sure I'll wait, and no I didn’t but I should be fine till the end of the lesson" Akule replied. He allowed his bag to slide off his shoulder and caught the strap before the bag slammed to the floor. He gently let the bag rest on the ground and knelt beside it looking for his water skin. Once found Akule stood with water skin in hand. He watched the instructor feed the two bird’s small piece of meat each, as he uncapped the water skin. They appeared to be red-tail hawks, but he wasn’t really sure. He gathered all his knowledge on the type of bird they would be working on today. To be honest he didn't know all that much about them, except one thing, they weren't easy birds to train with. He lifted the water skin to his mouth and adjusted it so that water would flow through the opening. After taking a few gulps, he closed it and returned it to his bag. According to some of the experiences he had heard from some of his classmates red-tails were stubborn, and could be aggressive at times.

Akule heard someone making their way toward them, another girl. She must be the other pupil he would be learning with. She appeared to be around the same age as him. Akule noticed she looked a little irritated and that her sights were trained on the instructor. He said nothing as the yasi made it known she was there. Apparently the two had met at one time or another. The girl then noticed he was there also and introduced herself. Instinctively he raised his hand at the same time she did to meet half way. Gently wrapping his fingers around hers Akule smiled gently and replied "Hi, pleasure to meet you. I'm Akule". His eyes studied her facial expressions and sensed a little sarcasm in her voice. He also noticed she wore a tiny smirk on her face. Probably for the comment she made toward the instructor.

Suddenly a high pitch screech filled the air nearly scaring the color from his hair. He quickly looked in the direction of the sound to see a harrier flying above. "Oh...so that must have been the reason she was searching the sky" he mumbled. Akule listened as his instructor replied with a long, clear whistle. He eyes darted from the harrier, to the instructor, and then back to the bird. His heart beat quickly as he witnessed the conversation between bird and human. He now closely observed his instructor as she turned facing them. She didn't look to happy to see who the comment had come from but said nothing. Instead she just raised her arm and changed her posture to a sturdier one. Looking back to the sky he watched the all white harrier dive down. It was a graceful sight, and yet at the same time intimidating. The bird spread its wings to slow down just before the impact of landing, extended its legs and came to rest upon her arm. As if in agreement with its masters reply, the bird let out another shriek and began displaying its aggressive side.

Taking a step back he replied to the instructor never letting his eyes leave the bird "Oh, no problem at all...who said there was a problem?" He looked at the other yasi and asked "Do you have a problem?" then turned his attention back to the tutor and said "Nope, we're good." He smiled nervously and turned his attention to the bird again which appeared to be mocking them. He stopped talking long enough to let her continue. "With patience, lots and lots of patience, and by the way im Akule" he replied. Following her directions he walked passed her to the gloves. Akule picked up his pair and began sliding his fingers into them. As he did so he turned to the instructor and replied to her question [i]"They fly, and poop...” Akule knew that wasn't the answered she'd be looking for but he could sense the tension between the two and attempted to lighten the mood.

Aose snorted when the one-eyed lady asked if there was a problem and the boy answered for them both yet she spoke nothing. There wasn’t anything to say in response and thusly left it at that. Looking around the flats she did see the small grouping of trees the ‘instructor’ spoke of, yet Aose made no move to take her archery equipment over to it. Instead she slid it from her shoulder and placed it on the ground beside her leg, allowing it to rest against her body. “I have no intention of leaving my archery aside. Ya be crazy if ya think that.”

The yasi left it at that, it should be pretty obvious by now that Aose wasn’t going to allow things to be taken from her, especially not her bow and arrows. Setting her blue eyes on the Chiet Aose could’ve sworn she saw the glittering flutters of wings dancing beside the girl’s head of fiery hair… Blinking and shaking her head she looked again, the bugger was gone. Bloody shyke.

“Birds vary on their daily activities actually. Surely they all have the basics of eating, flying, and pooping. But others are more socially inclined while others tend to flow through their days in solitary vices. Eagles, hawks, most predatory birds tend to be solo in most cases, yet as a hatchling they stay with their parents and are taught the ropes.” Aose knew enough of the birds around the mountain to see that there were some social and some loner birds. Eywaat grace my words with your knowledge.

The teen's eyes tightened slightly when Aose refused to set it aside. The rebellious girl was a right pain. "Then you can set it in the mud where it can be ruined while we work with the birds." She challenged back, turning her gaze to Akule afterwards as he grabbed both sets. Somewhat exasperated now, Vira chided after him. "Just the one, kid. Once you guys get used to them and they get used to you, maybe you can go buy a sontav; until then, you'll only use classic falconry gloves." She clicked her tongue at Tulaj and released him from her arm for the moment to approach the boy.

"Make sure your hand is in place. Red tails are larger than most hawks and can be somewhat aggressive." She turned her eyes on Aose then, waving her closer to don her glove as well. "They're going to sit heavy so when I set them on the gloves, make sure you have a good hold of the jesse." The woman paused, making sure both had their hands in place and then moving to grab the first of the two birds. Both were about the same size, though one was a lighter phase than the other.

The hawk leaned away, its wings half-spreading in defense and its beak opening. One foot lifted as if to make a jab at her, but it was the same foot the jesse was attached to. This Vira grabbed and used a bit of meat in her other hand to encourage the antsy hawk onto her arm. "Do not let go of the jess. These birds are not trained for any kind of free flight yet and will not return if they get loose." Looking between the two now, she chose Akule first and stepped towards him. "Just hold your arm out like this-" she demonstrated with her unbound arm by bending it slightly at the elbow and making a loose fist with thumb on top. "-I'll put the bird on the glove then and loop the jesse through your fingers. Remember, don't let go, okay?"

The basics were all good and everything, but Aose acknowledged the differences. "Right, community birds are going to usually be your non bird of prey, like finches or sea gulls or blackbirds. With the exception of the Wind Eagles and a few burrowing owl species, none of the birds of prey live together en masse. However, territories do overlap. Most birds of prey are going to be extremely territorial, too. They're not going to tolerate other birds near their nests and will often fight for kill rights. Red tails like these two have even been known to harass larger birds of prey out of their territory entirely. It's really just circumstantial as much as it is based off species."

It was the girl's turn now as Vira fetched the other bird from its cage. This one was more docile and simply stepped up, accepting the treat without fuss. "Can either of you tell what sex these birds are?" Both birds were of decent size in all, weighing around 1200 grams each. But other than their color difference, there was nothing to distinguish sex.

Aose waited for her male counterpart to answer and after what seemed a dozen chimes has passed and he never answered Aose studied the two birds more closely. Neither of them were quite frankly similar in everything she could see without a close look into them. Aose wanted to keep her eyes intact after all. Both relatively the same height, weight, and coloration... What sets the males apart from the female? She couldn't tell and then it dawned on her.

“Female are more territorial and she would've attacked me thinking I was a threat to her or her potential bearing of offspring thus you gave the female to him and the male to me. Males are less aggressive on average in most all Predatory birds.” Aose paused and looked at the birds, Eywaat tell me I am correct.

Falling silent she hoped her response was either correct or near to correct in her explanation. Otherwise she would feel like a total dork in front the cyclops of an instructor and Akule.

"Not exactly."

Vira made sure the girl had a firm hold of the jess before stepping away and calling Tulaj back to her again with presented arm. The harrier descended once more, landing hard on the sontav and beaking her for a treat. The teen glared at the raptor and gave his toe a pinch with her free hand. "Stop that. You don't bite me everytime to get a treat, you know that." She grumbled at the bird.

Turning back to the two, she went on. "Most birds of prey are hard to determine sex until you observe one lay an egg. With the Wind Eagles it's easy. Females will start readying a nest until they are ready to find a mate. But with other birds of prey, it's really kind of hard. Luckily, female red tails are larger than males, though only just a little. These two-" She gestured to Aose's. "Are males, though they're a bit on the fat side, heh. Now then-"

Vira went to grab one of the leashes holding it out for the pair to study. "We're going to be flying your birds on leashes. You hold one end, the other attaches to the jess. Then, just give them a toss." She indicated again with Tulaj, throwing her arm up until the bird launched off. "It's an instinctive response to take to the air." Once the albino was removed from her arm, she approached Aose and attached the leash for her.

"Alright, just give him a toss."

OOCYou can use your Tatani some if you want. There's nothing specific about the red tails. If you wanna learn about Tulaj, just post in about it :) I can give you a response from there.

Aose wasn't exactly disappointed when she got the answer wrong, it wasn't like she was prying into the minds and lives of the hawks, even though she would've been able to get a basic understanding of their life by doing so. However the ornery predator that the instructor owned, he was an entirely different matter. Half listening Aose took hold of the leash that had been attached to the bird's jess.

Flinging arm upward Aose felt the hawk's weight first press down as natural resistance and then the bird's grip released and the thundering of wings trying to take air. Aose's eyes were pinned on the instructor's bird, the intensity of her gaze was visible as she watched the bird take off gracefully into the air. You fly amongst the clouds like you are one with it... Yet you ornery little bugger attacks the one that feeds you.

Staring up at the bird in flight, ignoring the insistent tugging she was feeling with the leashed bird. Aose could feel the bird's urge to fly and Aose had to divert her attention just a moment from Tulaj. “I can not let you fly free, you wouldn't return.” A frown graced the young girl's face as she once more turned her gaze upward to Tulaj.

“You on the other hand bird... You fly free yet return.” Aose let out a soft whistle in amazement at the ornery bird's agility and faithfulness. “Why not just fly free?”

OOCWorking slowly into bringing in Tatani more... Not entirely sure how her side of things would influence right now.
