Appearance
Race: Human, Mixed (Svefra)
Gender: Male
Age: 31
Birthday: 6, Summer, 482
Birthplace: A whorehouse, Sunberth.
Starting City: Sunberth
Towering 6’1’’, Avalyon is a man with a distinctive scar crossing from his forehead to his lips, on the left side of his face. One-eyed wears an eyepatch over the left eye, the one he lost in a fight. His right and only eye is stern and brown, its almond feature a legacy from his father. Some say it shines like gold, due to his greedy. But that’s just a tale. He is fit and muscular, mostly due to his upbringing in the sea as a smuggler and raider of ships, tying knots, fighting and sailing between Sunberth and Zeltiva.
Avalyon has healthy yet yellowish teeth, with the exception of his last right premolar, which he lost in a fight while drunk in a whorehouse in Zeltiva. His hair is short, brown and messy, smelling of the sea. Overall, despite his scar and eyepatch, he has comely features.
Due to his life on the sea, Avalyon dons light clothes. They are plain and simple, and he wears a blue, old and stained coat.
Character Concept
Avalyon’s long-term ambition is to become rich, simply that. And since his ship was sunken, he wants to get his revenge on the man who did it – Sebastian Marks. The Sea Bastard doesn’t care about settling down or having a family, knowing the life he has chosen for himself, or rather, was brought into. Nonetheless, his social life isn’t the best and his looks don’t help him finding anyone suitable to settle down with. He has been an outcast from birth, being rejected by his own mother when he was born and from fellow svefra, who never considered him their kinman. He has taken the role of someone who never fitted in as a stigma - he neither belonged to svefras nor to fellow mankind, since men shunned him because of his monstruous actions. As a young adolescent he joined a pirating crew and made quite a name for himself, becoming know along the coasts of Zeltiva and Sunberth as a unsavory pirate, sly smuggler, unfaithful sellsword and ruthless slaver. There’s nothing he likes more than sweet money, bar the vices he indulges himself with it, as such as lusty women, tobacco and alcoholic spirits.
Personality – Avalyon has a very calm, yet cynical approach at first glance. He is cunning, with a quick wit and sharp tongue yet prone to make harsh and unsound decisions under pressure – he suffers from fit rages under stress. Fancying himself a godly man, he pays his respects to all gods, above all to Laviku, to whom he dutifully makes sacrifices and honors as he departs or arrives in his destination. Despite his enormous cruelty to foes, he is capable of showing sympathy for fellow outcasts and to those who respect him.
Ethics – – Avalyon fancies himself somewhat honorable and noble, taking into account other pirates, slavers and smugglers standards. As a sellsword, he would never run from battle if the odds were disfavorable, neither turn his cloak. As a smuggler and trader, he has a code of honor that a deal is a deal, so he never backs from it. Despite all this, he can be really deceptive in combat and he would not balk at attacking an unarmed foe – this has earned him a bad reputation, which casts everything he does on a worse shadow than it would be otherwise seen.
Likes – Amongst his vices, he counts ale and other alcoholic beverages, women and raiding. In fact, he only feels truly alive when he is aboard the deck of a ship, seafaring or pirating. He enjoys the thrills of smuggling at night, the sounds of waves crashing against the hull of his ship as it slowly approached its destination shrouded in darkness. He is also an easy chatter as he wants to grasp as much information about the current tidings of the world as possible.
Dislikes – It’s easy to say whom Avalyon hates. Sebastian “Passion” Marks, for instance, sunk his ship. Order as a value is something he despises. It's nothing more than a farce created by powerful men to legitimize their rule over lesser folk – which puts him at odds with the orderly Syliran Knights. To sum up, Avalyon grew with pirates who did not accept controlling authority even from their captain, so he came to dislike the self-righteous Syliran Knights and their hierarchical authority. It’s true he hardly had any contact with them, but he knew stories. The fallen pirate considers Svefra annoying because they are prone to disturb his (il)legitimate trade in the sea. To add to all this, he is not fond of serious and stubborn port officials (mainly the incorruptible) and, specially, of competing pirates.
Character History
Our story begins in a whorehouse in Sunberth, where a svefra young lad had a night with a whore. Avalyon was born from their lovely relationship and as soon as the woman knew she was pregnant, she thought about killing the baby in her womb. Well, he would be another mouth to feed. However, she sensed an opportunity there – she knew a mature childless couple, a travelling merchant and his wife, who travelled between Zeltiva and Sunberth. The slut thought that she could sell the little child to them and so she did. By the time they came back to Sunberth, Avalyon had been born and she offered – almost pleaded them to take him.
He was named Avalyon by his adopted mother and father, Verena and Marco Marem. They took the child under their care and raised him with love between the two cities where they made their trade and so the boy grew dreaming of seafaring with his family. He learned basic arithmetics from his Marco, who schooled him in the trader's arts of negotiation, while his mother taught him how to read and write.
By the time he was 12, during the autumn of 494, their ship was destroyed during a storm and Avalyon, alongside five crewmates managed to survive by getting a hold of part of the hull of the schooner for 2 days, until they were found by a back flag brigantine called Laviku’s Bastard passing nearby. They thought they had been rescued, but it was far from truth. Their saviours were pirates who planned to sell all of them into slavery. The pirate captain, however, decided that two of the six would be able to join their crew, since that same storm had killed two mates. Avalyon was chosen and for some years he served as a cabin boy, helping the captain and learning more from him. By the time he was 18 he was a mate known for his skills with rigging and sailing.
The captain of Laviku’s Bastard was a stern, yet rewarding man who demanded the best from his crew. However, he was excessively controlling which led to constant clashes and attrition with his quartermaster and the rest of the crew. One day, after a successful raid on a trading ship, there was a quarrel regarding the share of the loot. Soon the crew, including Avalyon took up arms and a mutiny started, with one third still loyal to the captain and the rest supporting the quartermaster. After the brawl, both the quartermaster and the captain were dead.
Hence, Avalyon Marem, who was 26 at the time, was chosen by his mates to command the ship, considering that he was one of the most skilled and liked pirates. It was quite a compromise between the factions, as they knew he would let them rule the ship.
For five years he led the Laviku’s Bastard on raidings, piracy and smuggling, becoming infamous around Zeltiva and Sunberth. That earned him a few nicknames, as such as “The Sea Bastard” and “One-eyed Avalyon” (due to the eyepatch he wore to conceal his damaged eye). He fought duels against competing captains, being scarred in the left side of his face by a rival, but impaling the man with his cutlass.
He amassed some money, but life was hard on the sea and it took its toll on him. Not only there were recurrent cases of dysentery amongst the crew, they also had to avoid other pirate ships, svefra and the Zeltivan Navy alike. There were few ships bold enough to go on their own unprotected and to make ends meet, since they did not prey on bigger fish, so they resorted to convoy operations and seeked employment by Merchant Princes to raid rivals. And so was it for two years before the Laviku’s Bastard was sunk.
After one of the best deals he had made within the year, as he approached Sunberth, the final destination of his voyage, the Laviku’s Bastard was ambushed by The Mistress, the brigantine captained by rival Sebastian Marks. Avalyon was taken by surprise and they were sinking before any answer was possible. Avalyon lost no time and took all the gold he had left, a few things and jumped with 3 of his mates on a boat which they started to row towards Sunberth.
