A day in the kitchens

Erade rushed through the twist and turns of the Inner Warrens. She had overslept again, due to browsing maps late into the hour, and was now late for her currant bendi. Besides working in the Glass Reverie, Erade particularly disliked kitchen duty, especially because the cooks were constantly hovering over her making her extremely nervous. She remembered her first time working in the communal kitchens. The head chef had made her so nervous she had dumped a whole jar of salt into the meal they were preparing. Since then Erade has been put on the cleaning crew, left to do dek work.

Erade ran around the last corner and slowed to a stop just outside. The communal kitchens had a big open walkway for easy access, in and out for large crowds. She peeked inside to see if any of the kitchen staff was around or at least paying attention for an extremely late Yasi.

Phew, doesn't look to be anyone around at the moment., she whispered to herself. Erade slowly made her way in, quietly as possible, but with no such luck.

A voice boomed over her, Ah-hm..

Erade knew that voice it was undeniable and the very thing she feared. The Yasi turned around slowly to face the dreaded head chef, Davoid.

Chef Davoid had her arms cross her chest and a stern frown upon her face.

Chef isn't a woman known to raise her voice but is strict due to what is at stake, especially because it's the whole colony in question, but even so can't she give a Yasi a break?, Erade thought to herself.

Hiiiii Chef Davoid.. Did you do something with your hair? It looks marv... Erade didn't even have a chance to finish before getting cut off.

Erade, you are late.. Again. The chef berated, clearly flattery wasn't going to work.

I know, Chef, I overslept..

The chef pointed to the many stacks of dirty dishes piled up in the sink. I don't want to hear excuses just get started cleaning morning dishes, and this will be the last time your late. The threat was well implied and Erade understood well enough what she meant in that simple phrase.

Yes, Chef. Erade murmured, her head cast down. She trudged along to the sink and began her labors. Chef Davoid watched Erade for a few bells to make sure the yasi was doing her job and a good one at that before returning to preparing the noon meal.

The yasi let go of her rigid posture and a sigh of relief, That woman really does frighten me.

A day in the kitchens

Postby Erade on August 22nd, 2013, 5:38 am

Erade finished the dishes and seeked out a staff member to see if there was anything else left to do. One pointed her in the direction of the mop and well enough said.

I really hate kitchen duty, the young Inartan grumbled. Erade furiously mopped the floor not paying attention and one thing lead to another, and it happened all so fast.

The handle of the mop had knocked into a stock pot full of stew brewing on the stove right next to Erade, thus making half of its contents spill across the stove and the floor.

By the gods, I swear... Erade cursed at her misfortune as she quickly caught the pot before more had the chance to spill out. Looking around nonchalantly, she saw no one had seemed to notice the mess or heard the crash of the pot.

The frazzled Yasi quickly cleaned up her horrid mess and replaced the mop back at the cleaning station all in record time it seemed. Erade peered into the half empty or perhaps half full stock pot wondering what was she going to do about this mistake. Her mind went through scenario after scenario. The easiest solution would be to leave it as is and go about her business as if nothing had ever happened. She had done her required allotted bells for the day, but Erade never did like the easy way out. Next choice would be to replicate the stew and her only choice left.

The stew appeared to be a fish and vegetable stew that Endals and Avora loved so much. Lucky break for Erade, extra ingredients were neatly sitting on the counter next to the stove. Only have cooked the most basic of meals before this looked to be a daunting task.

A day in the kitchens

Postby Erade on August 22nd, 2013, 6:10 am

Erade started with roughly fabricating the fish and julienne the vegetables. After a few cuts to the fingers and bandage later, the fish, was suppose to be two perfect fillets and veggies uniform is size but rather looked like a mass murder chopped the poor food up. Grimacing at her handy work, she had no other choice but put the massacred fish and vegetables into the stock. Erade added some fresh water, herbs and spices and turned the fire back up to bring it to a boil.

There.. I hope that's convincing enough, she secretly hoped. As Erade turned around to leave, she noticed the time and it was almost class time and she couldn't afford to be late to that as well, even if it was boring.

In a serious case of deja vu, there was Chef Davoid standing with her arms across her chest with that serious expression on her face. Only difference was that one eyebrow was quirked up in question. Without saying anything, the head chef stepped around Erade, found a tasting spoon, and gingerly spooned out the stew and tasted it.

I'm so sorry Chef Davoid, it was an accident! I didn't mean to! I was just trying to fix things!, Erade blurted out.

Chef Davoid faced the flustered Yasi once again in her signature pose of the day, Not bad Yasi, it could use more pepper though.

I'm sorry, I was mopping and the pot got knocked over.. Erade continued to fluster apologies clearly not hearing what the chef had said at first. After a moment, it dawned on her, Wait.. What?

I said 'Not bad'. Erade was surprised. I was watching you the whole time, I half expected you to turn tail and run off.

I was seriously thinking about it Erade admitted.

Well I'm glad you didn't. After a few chimes of awkward silence the chef spoke up again. Don't you have class to be getting to?

Erade took off out of the kitchen to the learning gallery, all with a smile on her face. No more cleaning crew for her from now on.

Bonus:

Additional Comments: It's very difficult telling when Erade is speaking and thinking. Generally speaking, thoughts are italicized. Speech should be in quotation marks ("I said do it again."). If you could be more consciencious in the future about it, it'd really help. Thanks Erade :)

That aside, I had to laugh at her misfortune throughout. I'm not sure what fabricating fish means, but given the butchered work she did it certainly seemed to do a good job of faking its preparation. I gave you a point in persuasion for her attempt at sucking up to the chef and then trying to fix the pot of stew.
