"Oh! Excellent job, Sir Ironhorse!" Titus approached the Blacksmisth and examined his work thoroughly. He was excited to see that he could wield Hammie once more, just eight more days, it would feel like an eternity, but he was a Knight! He could handle it. He sat back down and pondered about Ethan's next question.

"Hmmm! I'm afraid I don't know, Sir Ironhorse. Knowledge about Pre-Valterrian is very, very limited... I imagine those scholars at Zeltiva would know more" He gave a rather guilty smile, he didn't want to disappoint the Smith, not when he had worked so much for his warhammer.

As usual, he watched and talked with the Blacksmith until it was time for his duties.

[The Ironworks] Hammer Time (Ethan)

Postby Ethan Ironhorse on September 2nd, 2013, 6:52 pm

Ethan smiled and nodded at Ser Titus, there was a look of disappointment in Ethan face, but he wouldn’t openly state it, “Yes, I had feared that such information wouldn’t be readily available. I will have to begin training in the use of arms, since I will have to travel. Thank you Ser Titus, I will have to start planning and saving money, if I wish to go to Zeltiva and try to pursue lost knowledge of the smithing craft.” Ethan thought over the things he would need. “I will need to wait for the end of winter, due to the winter storms.” Shaking his head he was going to have to practice nearly every day and with constant dedication. Ethan had always felt safe in the city, no matter what his opinion about freedom or sweeping power difference between the Knights and everyone, the knighthood made sure that theft and murder were almost nonexistent. The problem came from when someone else had to travel to a different city they expected the ever attentive presence of the Knights.

Ethan’s first real thought on what he was going to need, was a great deal of medical supplies because his attempts at training had put him down for days. If Ethan was going to try and find such things, he needed to be clear of purpose; it was going to mean giving up ale and women. His focus was going to have to be on brawling and weapons, the physical threat would help and with whatever spare time he had left he would focus on magic. It was a bit depressing thinking of the next couple of seasons, but Ethan would have focus.

Ethan smiled and went back to talking about the Spinning Coin fights, as well as general topics that Ser Titus and himself had found to be similar in tastes. As Ser Titus sat Ethan measured the weight of the stock and wrote it down on the grey slate comparing the two weights. The rails had added about quarter of a pound more weight, and for Ethan that meant that would have to balance the pommel with additional weight to keep the balance. The hilt he had already expected to expand a little too allow for a better break or stopping point for a sword, but that would only get him a third of the weight needed. Ethan realized that the pommel would have to be thick and require a longer nail to tie it into the stock. When Ser Titus left Ethan bid the man farewell on his job duties and went home to sleep. Looking about he wondered how he was going to sale all his furnishings in time?

========

The next few days Ethan worked hard on the hilt and pommel, pounding and shaping the steel, cooling it off and then measuring the weight. He had to put three hilts into the scrap pile before he finally got one that was of good shape and the weight he wanted. Picking up the engraving chisels Ethan went to work on the hilt and pommel. The hilt didn’t have a complex engraving so it was easily done inside of a day, and Ethan was able to complete the engraving of the pommel in two days’ time, it seemed that Ethan was a little ahead of schedule and felt proud of it. Picking up the leather straps and tacks from the storeroom Ethan began to work a cross braid pattern into the hilt. Ethan had always like the diamond pattern that it made on the handle of a weapon. Most weapons produced in the Ironworks had a simple leather strap wrapped around the hilt. Nothing was wrong with it and it took less time than performing the cross braid, but after hard use the wrap pattern could often move up or down exposing the wood and shock to the hand. Ethan set the last bit and pieces of the hammer down on the work table and began to assemble the hammer.

Ethan placed the hilt on first, it was loose upon the stock sliding upward till it met the steel rails. Ethan took a finishing hammer and placing to strip of leather close to the hilt hammered in a tack through two layers of leather and the wood. Slowly, he began tacking and weaving the leather together. Once he was done making the crown, Ethan wove two layers of the braid together, before picking up a dull knife and stuffing the top layer up into the hilt. The extra thickness of the leather would wedge the hilt in place, Ethan then moved a square copper ring up the hilt jamming it over the tacked leather and fixing it in place with a long nail through the stock. Ethan check the hilt and saw that it was as tight against the rails as he could make it. Twisting the point edge downward, Ethan filed the nail smooth so it would catch or cut Ser Titus. The leather braiding took shape and flowed down the handle. Ethan lightly placed the pommel on and lightly tapped the holding nail into the bottom of the stock. Using a knight Ethan cut the excess length and then began to stuff the leather pattern into the pommel.

With the hilt assembled Ethan tapped the nail into the pommel to finish the stock. Weighing the stock, he checked his weight and figures, seeing that overall he hand only added half a pound of weight. Considering the over weight of the head, it was a marginal increase and Ser Titus could get used to it. Finally, Ethan lined up the head of the hammer onto the shaft of the stock. Some of the rails were perfectly snugged against the hammer head, but the banding would help protect the small gaps that Ethan had. Ethan picked up heavy weighted nails and began to place them in the banding. Once assembled Ethan took a polishing cloth to the whole assembly and waited, and all that one day ahead of schedule!

This was it, the moment of truth, the day where Titus could grasped his hands on his beloved warhammer once more. On the scheduled day, The large knight entered the Ironworks with very high spirits and anticipation, he was sure the blackmisth would do a good job... but he needed to see first-hand how well did Ethan do.

What he saw... brought a look of pure awe to his shaven face. His warhammer was there... gleaming, shining, and more beautiful than ever before! The engravings, the hilt, the head murals, it was all perfect. "Woah..." He forgot to notice the blacksmith and made his way to Hammie, picking it up and examined it up close, his eyes figuratively shining. "This... this is amazing... absolutely..." Not after fifteen ticks did he noticed Ethan was there. "Ah! Sir Ironhorse! Forgive me, I was just simply captivated by the beauty of your work! It's... amazing! Beautiful, simply beautiful..." He wielded the warhammer, testing his stance "Hmmm, I can already feel her crushing enemies of the Order! Hahaha!" He almost swung it, but realized he could cause some serious damage to the smithy, he stopped himself.

"Well, I must reward you for your hard work!" Ser Titus took out a pouch of mizas from his belt pocket, took Ethan's right hand with his left, opened it, and firmly gave him the pouch. It was filled with three hundred gold mizas "For you, Sir! And I accept no refund!"

Now that was done, Titus remembered about Ethan's wish for some combat training for him to defend himself as he traveled to Zeltiva, this gave Titus an excellent idea "Sir Ironhorse, I felt like mizas is not enough for me to repay you... how about some combat training in the Fighter's Pits, hmmm? I can be your mentor!" Whether the blacksmith accepted or not, Titus would walk out from the Ironworks with lifted hearts that day.

OOCAlright! Since you mentioned arms training, Ser Titus would gladly train you now! It will be in another thread, about Ethan and him sparring at the Fighter's Pits. ;)

Post your final reply for this thread and I'll give you your grades next. :D

[The Ironworks] Hammer Time (Ethan)

Ethan watched Ser Titus as he picked up the hammer. The big knight seemed enthralled with the hammer. Ethan smiled, the pride that he felt was for a job well done… and the money, but it still made Ethan feel good that Ser Titus was pleased. Ethan laughed as Ser Titus finally noticed him; he smiled and merely waved his hand to tell him that it was fine. The man truly loved his weapons, and Ethan had worked hard on this one. It truly felt good testing his skills, the knots in his shoulders and hands could finally release and Ethan could finally get a good night sleep, and if there was enough coin… Betsy the tavern wench with that heavy upper chest might like him a little more if he tipped well.

As Ethan saw the heavy pouch he held out his hand, it was going to be a good day. Hundred, maybe even hundred fifty gold miza’s, sure Ethan was going to have to give up twenty maybe thirty miza’s to Ros for the use of the tools, gold and copper leafing, but it would be a good start. Maybe, he would even spurge a little and get a copy of a book from Devandil, after he paid for a weapon and shield. Oh, he could even get a day in the baths! Yeah, a nice soak and a massage, the thoughts of all the little pleasures that Ethan could get at the windfall floated in his mind, and then he heard Ser Titus announce what Ethan was giving him and his jaw dropped. 300 gold mizas! “It’s too much!... I… Please…” Ser Titus shook his head in dismissal of Ethan trying to figure out a way to give back some of the mizas. Sultros Blades charges 150 miza’s for engraving, the amount of leaving couldn’t have been more then 50. Ethan felt almost ashamed that he had so much money. He was constantly saving, and Ser Titus had almost giving Ethan a quarter of a year’s worth of salary for one job.

Ethan looked down, the weight of the pouch seemed beyond reason or luck. So much money… Ethan swallowed as Ser Titus made his second offer, happiness at his good fortune began to grip his throat and his eyes became slightly teary. “Aye, I would grateful for all the help you can give me.”
