How could she describe this feeling? No words could give it full expression, but the sense of sheer joy, overwhelming and filling her was beyond comprehension. And in the back of her mind, Mohya laughed.
The moment the eagle had landed back at the aerie, Vira had slipped off (near collapsing as her knees turned to jelly and a giddy laugh slipped from her lips) and embraced the birds face for her neck was far too large to wrap her arms around. The feeling of love and pride that swelled in her as she held the eagle like that for a moment was emphasized by the soft and happy churr the bird gave her in return. It was a bonding like she'd not seen before, not that she knew what it felt like for others of course. That one had chosen her...Her! Lavira, the broken, Lavira, the half blind...
"I must tell Kovac, Mohya. He would want to know first."
~Alright, child. Speak with the Valintar after, arrange for our quarters.~ The eagle thought back to her, making Vira grin anew as she finally released the bird. She would have to get used to talking with her heart and mind and not her mouth. That was going to take some time.
Leaving the eagle at the dark nest, she hurried out, passing the first of the Dek that worked the Nesting Aeries (Tishu was her name) and giving the older woman a grin and a hug as she passed, almost knocking her off her feet. "Sorry Tishu! I'll be back in a while, I think, and help catch up. Feed the babies for me! Bye!" In Mohya's aerie, the raptor gave a clucking sound that emanated laughter, Vira thought before the teenager was gone.
Dawn had just begun to spread across the Sanikas Valley and light the volcano's eastern face when they landed so Vira thought Kovac might still be sleeping. She raced through the warrens and tunnels, weaving around the early morning teams of Dek cleaning the corridors and even bumping into an Avora (of which yelled back at her for her slip) but it did not stop her.
By the time she reached the Avora's level of the Commonrooms, Vira had to pause, breathing hard as she looked about for a senior who might know which was his room (he knew where she lived but she did not know where his room was!). A grey-flecked dame was exitting a room ahead and Vira quickly stepped to her, her right hand pressing hard into her side as if to pressure the pain into submission. "Excuse me, ma'am, I'm looking for Avora Kovac's quarters, can you point me to them?" She said, her face lit with a smile still.
The reputation of the man in question always preceded him and the older woman raised a brow at the teenager bothering her on her way to work. "Five down, take a left, go up the steps. Second door on the right." The matron replied before turning and leaving as well. Vira hurried off to the place so indicated, counting the doors as she went out of habit.
When she reached the hunters assumed address, her hand rose to make a fist in front of the door, ready to knock, and breath held in preparation. But, the teen hesitated.
What if he's not in there? What if he's upset for waking him? Does he even sleep in?
Nonsense, Lavira, just knock. The worst thing he'll not be there and you'll just have to wait...but I don't know if I can wait. Bother, just knock!
She released a tense breath and knocked quick and light three times. But the rapping was too light even for her making the noise to hear. The former chiet paused and listened long with ear against the door. No answer. This time, the girl knocked harder and longer, knocking and knocking until he answered...she hoped he answered. Oh how she hoped.
Please oh please be there. She thought to herself, eyes clenched shut and her breath held a second time.
