2nd of Fall

It was a beautiful day up on the Aeries; a gentle breeze teased at the giant birds, pulling at the wings of the worshipped raptors, prompting them into flight. The golden rays of the fall sun warmed the hard rock of the cliffs, smells of earth and bird mixing pleasantly, wafting delicately on the autumn air.

In almost every regard, it was a perfect day. Or, it would have been a perfect day, if it hadn't been for the screaming.

It was a couple, it had to be; no one else argued like that. She, beautiful in her rage, and he, awkward in his defense, and obviously unhappy about the entire situation.

"You're blowing me off? ME?" The woman shrieked, fierce.

"No. I mean, yes, but --,"

"And for training? She hissed, "You promised me a picnic; you're just lucky I don't go off with Sydle," she paused in mock thought, a finger placed thoughtfully on her chin, "Or maybe I should? I doubt he'd ever think of ditching me for some stupid training session."

"Look, Danisse, I didn't really have a choice. You know how it is, someone's gotta train the new recruits. It just happened to be mine turn," he sighed, rubbing the back of his head. "Look, can't we postpone it till tomorrow? What-his-face is supposed to get back from Alvadas, and I hear he's bringing back some good stuff." He smiled, as charming as he could manage.

Danisse snorted, obviously a charming enough for her.

"You know what? I think I will go off with Sydle. Besides, I've heard he's made captain," she nodded, turning away from the offending Endal.

He groaned as she walked away, sliding down a stone wall.

"Petching trainee."

Ugh. What. A. Loser. (Lavira, please)

The giddiness of a newly bonded had not fully worn off yet, but Vira was managing. She had spent yesterday afternoon (following her visit with Kovac) picking up gear that she'd need for Mohya and riding. With her weakened right side, some of the stuff had to be altered to make certain long flights wouldn't see her falling off the bird as she almost had the night of the bonding.

She wasn't going to fall off now, though, the teen settled into the harness comfortably and the wind-goggles keeping the air out of her single eye as the eagle soared the thermals, killing time before she was supposed to meet up with the older Endal. It was the first trip out and they were supposed to visit a few of the nearest Forward Camps as well as the prime hunting grounds the Endal and eagles used. She had yet to go see the Valintar for Flight assignment, but Vira knew already where she'd go, where best she'd fit. the Owls were interesting but she wasn't a healer and that's mostly what they wanted. She had very little interest in foreign affairs and her desire to be a fighter was next to none; so, it was Swift Falcons she'd choose in the long run. After this rider showed her the ropes.

Through Mohya's mind she sensed the landing place in the main aeries where the other Endal lived, a communal "strip", so to speak high on the mountainside. A dark eagle waited patiently on the flat and a pair of figures were talking.

I bet that's him, Mohya.

~I bet you're right. Hang on.~

The eagle tucked her wings and dove, feathers quivering when her rider whooped in delight and clung to the thick feathers Mohya had helped show her to use that wouldn't be inadvertently yanked out during dives like that. Nearing the flat, the bird spread her wings again, flapping hard as she slowed and extended her feet to grab the ground as it swung to meet them.

In one smooth motion, the bird lowered and Vira pulled the latches securing her loose, freeing her from the harness and allowing her to slip off and onto the ground below. She weaved her fingers through Mohya's feathers and passed under her sleek neck to approach the two figures. Unfortunately, the teen caught the tail end of the conversation...and it clearly pertained to her as the male of the pair turned from the woman leaving and said the expletive about trainee's.

"Well I'm terribly sorry for being an inconvenience, Endal Nurak, but weren't you once in my position as well? If not from you, from who will I learn?" She pushed the goggles up off of her eyes and frowned at the man, that wretched scar that marred an otherwise beautiful face plainly visible as was the unsettlingly blank stare of the filmed right eye. Her clothing was suited for flight today where normally she would have worn the things she did in the nests: instead of billowing, the clothes were fitting. The vinati tied behind her neck, leaving creamy shoulders and arms bare. The womans bryda clung to her body, ending in a pair of waterproof calf boots that tied up the outsides of both legs. Her rusty hair was pulled back into its typical work braid and the bay eagle feather was woven into the tight braid, the plume allowed to dangle beside the bottom of the braid. Her tone was polite but crisp, a retort that would have been obvious enough.

"I'm sure your lady friend will be happy to have you back early if we get this over quickly. I have a good memory, so I doubt it'll be too hard to memorize the locations."

"Apology accepted, trainee," he retorted, not kindly.

"And perhaps, once, we were at the same level. But when I was training as an Endal, you were cleaning the aeries, with the Dek." He paused, staring quite obviously at the scar that ran down her face, "But that's the past, I think we can agree," he smiled, too widely and too fast for it to be sincere.

"Moyha," he said, greeting the wind eagle with a slight bow, "I was excited to hear of your bonding, although, when they first told me you had bonded with a chiet, I hadn't believed it," his eyes shot back towards Lavira, judging. "But, Dolir and I were glad to see you find a partner, nonetheless."

"Right, well, enough with the small talk," Nurak clapped his hands together, making his way towards the black eagle. "We'll be touring the general area for today, landing cliffside on one of the smaller mountains," he pointed to the exact mountain he had in mind, "Some small game hunting for you and me, Lavira -- the eagles will probably want to do some hunting on their own."

"So, everyone ready?"

The teen stared at the man, her cheeks hot and her lips pursed a the gall he had.

Did he seriously just call me a Dek? Petch, I had more contact with the Eagles than nearly all the rest my age.

~Easy, lass, he's just goading you.~
The bird replied gently, one talon tapping on the stone as they both stared at the man now likewise mounting up. That the older male was staring back at the teen in that inconsiderate way made the young woman all the more irritated. She was so self-conscious already and to be so blatantly stared at...except it wasn't her, it was the scar. Forcibly, she turned her head so that only her seeing side could be stared at.

Then, Vira donned a grin and said in an oh-so-sincere voice that made his hateful tone seem like that of a spoiled child. "Really? I thought I was the first Yasi in almost a decade to be considered by Master Meera for apprenticeship. And that was after most of my Bendi was spent in the company of our fine feathered friends." She gave Mohya a stroke to which she was rewarded with a friendly chirp. "I mean, I did take my first flight with one when I was eleven, but I guess you were too busy training."

Within her mind, Mohya was guffawing, the eagle having spread her tail and straightened off the ground more, forcing the teen to shift upwards in the harness to keep her place. Once the laughter had subsided and Nurak had explained what they would be doing, Vira nodded curtly. "Let's get going then 'fore the day's wasted."

~That is certainly one way to keep your temper in check. I wish I had your patience, lass.~

I hardly call it patience. He looks like an eagle dragged him through some Takin shyke and dropped him into the volcano for good measure. I pity Dolir. I hope he has more pride than to insult others by their appearance.

~I am sure he does. When we land, be careful, Lavira. I am always a wing away.~

I know.

"True. You were talented," He smirked, grabbing his pack of gear as he sauntered over to his eagle, "But, I think we can both agree, to be considered for something isn't that same thing as a guarantee," he shrugged, rubbing his eye as if something was caught in it; rubbing the exact same eye that mirrored Lavira's scar.

"Enough, Nurak."

Unable to remain silent any longer, Dolir snapped at the Endal, "Remember your duty, to train. Not to antagonize newer recruits," his thoughts spreading throughout the aeries. Obviously agitated, the great rapture ruffled his feathers, "You will forgive my companion, Moyha and Lavira? Despite his twenty four years, Nurak still allows himself the behavior of a nestling."

"He will apologize now."

Nurak, face burning red in embarrassment, refused to look at either eagles or Lavira as he checked the sadles. He remained stubbornly silent, as he tried to mount the Wind Eagle.

Dorik chirruped, stretching his wings out, refusing to allow Nurak access. They next few ticks passed in silence, although it was obvious the two speaking. Eventually, Nurak turned from his eagle, bowing again before Mohya.

"Forgive me, Mohya and...Lavira," he started, Lavira's name coming out hardly above a whisper, "I allowed my emotions to overcome me. Neither of you deserved my behavior, and it is my duty --,"

"Your honor," Dorik corrected.

"-- My honor," Nurak echoed, his face burning redder than it had before, "to train Lavira to better aid our city." Finishing his forced apology, Nurak jumped over to the Eagle, ready to mount.

At Lavira's signal, they would fly.

When the other eagles voice now rose from the tension between the two Endal, Vira couldn't help looking towards the dark bird, surprised. Mohya was still clucking in humor within her mind but the girl was relieved to have another, more mature voice stand up. "Thank you, dear Dolir. A kinder soul to soften his riders sharp edges."

Watching the silent exchange while they waited for an apology, Vira couldn't help laughing inwardly at it and the antics of the bird to refuse his rider to mount up. At last, Nurak eased off and turned grudgingly to them in order to apologize, to which Vira simply shrugged. "Your honor can be proven in the field, sir." Mohya turned slightly to position herself into the wind and ready to rise from the platform. As her wings opened, Vira turned back to Nurak and Dolir, but spoke to the Endal foremost. "And for the record, Master Meera had already offered me the position. Personally. How long did you wait before that beauty you ride chose you?" Mohya spread her wings then and lifted them into the air with a screech.

The eagle rose fast and hard, wings flapping to carry them up over the mountain to wait for the pair to catch up and lead them to the forward camps. As she flew, Vira felt her skin break in gooseflesh and that giddy, stomach-dropping feeling fill her again as it did each time they took to the air.

In her mind, however, the chastising began.

~Be careful who you anger, child. Not all will have an eagle to step between them and cap the flow of venom.~

The wisdom of the words did not go ignored as they wheeled overhead, Vira peering back to the ground below quietly as she clung to the eagles shoulders and neck. I'm not going to let some disrespectful shyke talk to me like that, Mohya. He may be older and have been bonded longer, but that's still no way to talk to your allies. Rivalries are bound to happen but need it be in that way?

~Just be careful, Lavira. We've both come a long way; I would hate to see you fall again.~

Alright, I'll be careful.

The winds around the aeries swept up in an excited frenzy as Dolir took to the skies, the black feathers of the giant bird flashing ruby and violet under the showing rays of Syna's light. The Eagle hovered, riding the ever blowing winds of Kalea for a quick tick, his mind reaching out to Lavira and Mohya.

"We'll fly not far, Nurak plotted the training grounds close," his thoughts echoed, accompanied by a variety of bird eyes images -- a mental map to their shared location.

With a proud shriek, Dolir pressed his wings against the winds, granting himself a limited lift, "Let's see who gets there first, shall we?" The Eagle teased, a grin obviously heard beneath the challenged. Dolir screeched again, and tucking his wings behind him, the Eagle spiraled into a dive.

And then they were off.

Dolir was proving far more likable than his rider and Vira inwardly grinned, tensing when Mohya took off after the darker feathered eagle. The girl whooped as the dive began, her stomach clenching and her nerves on fire. This was always the hardest part, her hands slick as they held the harness loops tight.

Mohya was a strong and swift bird, average sized when it came to Wind Eagles, but she was definitely not the fastest. That, and she was ever mindful of Lavira laying flat against her neck and shoulders to keep her streamlined. The girl, Mohya knew, was still in recovery and overexerting her now would not do. Forcing the G's on her just to keep up with the faster Dolir and Nulrak was unbefitting (that and she had little reason to show off to the likes of them). Still, the flight was quick, the dive hard and enjoyable when it came time to level off. Vira whooped once they had, her heart ever-soaring.

~Dolir, which camps will we be starting at? I do know Vira has visited the one on the Loch.~ Mohya asked of the other eagle, beating wings to draw even with him and allow one large eye to focus on him and Nulrak for a moment. The Loch camp was well known to riders as a relatively accessible but long-flighted location with few major dangers. It was a good beginners camp to start the training process for young Endal, testing their endurance out there.
