Continued from here90 Summer, 513 AV, Sultros Blades "That sounds useful," he commented and meant it, for it showed that she had experience with metal working techniques and the difference between a pot and a helmet was only one of degree, though armour was not something that was specialised in here - at the present at least. He walked over the the forge and dipped his left hand into the coals to test how well the heat was distributed for it. He nodded in satisfaction and then turned round to face her. "The forge and tools are yours to use as you need for this and if you need something that is not immediately obvious then ask. If you need assistance even with something menial then again, ask for I will be here anyway." He pointed out the metal which was stacked to one side. "Steel you can find there along with other metals such as brass and copper, and all the tools that you are likely to need can be found in the racks, but as I say if you need something and cannot see it then ask."
"Show me what you can do, make me something that you are familiar with and if you can do what you say then I have a place for you here if you wish it."His expectations were high and he would be watching closely for the details would be telling of how she handled both tools and materials. |

She watches the Isur dip a hand in the coals. It isn't the first time she has seen this, but it always surprises her. She flinches slightly, an instinct. She listens as he explains her eyes scanning the rack quickly. She makes note of the tools available, she's worked with most if not all of them before.
She hears his request and gives a nod. Something she knows? Horseshoes are easy but they have to be made well or risk hurting the horse. She is confident of her skill with them. She has made up her mind, she takes a strip of iron and shoves it in the coals. She produces two thick strings from her pocket, pulling her sleeves up to her shoulders and securing them with the strings. This action reveals her arms which were hidden in her loose sleeves. They show experience in swing heavy hammers, and scars burned into her flesh from stray sparks. She ties an apron around her body, to save her clothes more than her flesh. She is low on money and can't afford to go out and get new ones.
She stokes the flames with the crank blower waiting for the lighter orange color that shows the metal will work with her. When she sees that color she takes a pair of tongs and a heavier hammer. She retrieves the glowing metal with the tongs and places it on the face of the anvil. She begins to strike the metal. The sound ringing through the room.
Sparks fly, and her flesh glistens with perspiration. The glowing metal begins to stretch and flatten. She continues to strike the metal until the stretched end is about a foot long she shoves it back into the coals. She takes this moment to breathe a few deep breaths and take punch and a flat chisel from the rack of tools and placing them in her reach.
A few cranks of the blower and some time, and the metal is heated well enough. she retrieves it with the tongs again. She places the metal against the face once more, this time her strikes come more deliberately. A couple of strikes at the edge to form a blunt curve. She moves it to the horn and begins striking; the metal curving inward. Back to the face for a couple of strikes to keep a uniform flatness. To the horn and she reaches the curve she is satisfied with. She places the curve over the pritchel hole and grabs the punch. Four lined strikes and four holes are driven into the metal. She places the punch where it was and picks up the flat chisel. Four more strikes pausing only to line the chisel up to the holes left by the punch, stretching them into slots. She places the chisel down next to the punch, then picks the curved metal up and places it into the flame again.
With this break she takes a cutting hardy and places it into the hardy hole in the anvil. She cranks the blower a few more times, then retrieves the metal. She place the metal over the hardy and strikes the metal, cutting the curved piece from the excess. She drops the excess in water, causing a screech.
She returns to the half curved metal on the anvil. She picks it up with the tongs and moves it to the horn, striking. The metal curves towards the other end. When the curve is where she wants it, she taps the edge to create the same blunt curve that's on the other end. She picks up the punch: one, two, three, four strikes four holes. Then the flat chisel. Four strikes and four slots are made. She dunks the horseshoe into water waiting for it to stop bubbling before lifting removing it. She sets it on the face of the anvil and wipes her brow with the back of her wrist.
She motions to it, her index finger outstretched.
"Would you like it polished? I don't see a point in polishing a horseshoe it's just going on the hoof of a horse." She says. |

Eanos watched carefully as she worked, though he sat on the stool by his bench and sketched swiftly on a parchment so that he didn’t stare at her.
What interested in him was how she moved and how much of what she did told the story of practice. He wasn’t especially interested in new apprentices who didn’t know one end of a hammer from the other; for those Ros had the places and opportunities. Nerves he expected, at least to some degree, and also the delays and pauses of someone working in a strange place with someone elses tools and organisation.
What he saw caused an internal smile of appreciation for it seemed to him that she undersold herself out in the shop. Weapons perhaps she was unfamiliar with, but metal and heat were clearly old friends. Of course a horse shoe was never tested against steel in battle, but from what he’d seen he had no reason to doubt that she knew how to heat treat steel.
Still though, the test was not done.
”I can see that you have skill in the work that you have demonstrated.” He was not about to fault her on what she had shown, though he had to wonder if put in the same situation he would not have attempted something more complex. There was a fine line between pride and hubris and perhaps she was wiser than he.
”What you say is true enough. Yet on the other had we are not in the business of shoeing horses and what sets us apart from the Ironworks is that nothing leaves this shop unless every part of it, visible or not has been finished to the highest possible degree.”
He nodded at the shoe which sat on the anvil. ”So, show me how well you can finish this shoe. It is a higher carbon steel than you would usually use for a shoe so it should take a good polish.”
He pointed to a section of shelving in case she had not yet noticed it. ”Abrasives and such can be found over there.” He wondered how well she would do, for he suspected that this was a little further from her comfort zone than the previous work, yet that was exactly what she wished to achieve by working here. |

She cracks her knuckles, a few loud cracks ringing out. She sighs knowing she should've done so in the first place. It is a custom weapon shop. She picks up the warm horseshoe and places it on the table where the punch and chisel still are. She moves over to the shelving and retrieves a wire brush. She also takes a small hammer and a smaller chisel from the rack, if she was going to polish a horseshoe she was going to make it look good enough for a Knight's steed.
She pulls the stool over to the table and takes a seat. She lays out the tools she is going to use within reach. First to make it shine. She picks up the wire brush and the horseshoe and begins to roughly scrub the surface. The blackness begins to wear away. When the blackness is mostly off she leans closer. She carefully finds the places in need of scrubbing. No longer roughly scrubbing at it, she makes sure to keep as uniformed of polish as she could. The metal curve in her hands takes on a gleaming that she is satisfied with.
She sets in down and still stays hovered over it. She picks up the chisel and hammer. She traces from the tp slit on one side to the other. No marks are made, this movement is only for a reference. She tilts the chisel up and taps it a few times driving it into the metal. She then tilts it in an angle, and begins to tap it again and again. She takes her time, the line begins to curve around the horseshoe, she has to turn the piece to keep it from going off path. When it nearly reaches the top, she turns the chisel and begins tapping again. A sharp angle pointing to the opposite end of the horseshoe. She does the same thing to the other side, again ending in an angel pointing towards the other end.
She leans in closer, so she can see each detail she is doing. Between the angles she begins to chisel again. She taps and turns the piece multiple times. The engraved image comes into place. The Windoak. She works slowly and carefully. When she finishes the last star, she picks up the piece and taps it against the table to knock off the excess. She stands and finds a cloth. She picks up the piece and wipes it with the cloth to give it a final shine. She stretches her hands out towards the Isur, the cloth under it.
"It isn't too detailed, simplicity is sometime best. I have done more detailed work on iron sculptures and the like." She says, a hint of pride in her voice.
OOCSorry for the later reply. Long weekend. |

She watches as he examined the piece. It wasn't highly detailed nor is it the best piece she has made. Still, she held a pride for everything she makes. She hadn't considered armors. She thinks on it for a moment. She could attempt to learn both at the same time. She already has smithing down, she can bend metal into all different shapes.
She thinks of armor shapes. Thin enough to be worn, but thick enough to prevent damage to the one in the armor. It seems more complicated, more detail is needed to work with armors. A challenge, it could do her good.
"I want to learn how to make weapons mostly for my own pride. But I could learn to make armors as well." She nods and wipes her brow with her forearm. |

She nods, a job and a chance to make weapons. But not only that, she'll be able to learn something she never thought of. A good prospect in her mind. She shakes her head to his question, of questions.
"I'll take it. And I'll let you know if I have any later." She says.
She can try to etch out a living now, the money she had from her father was running very low. She really doesn't want to end up sleeping in taverns with the drunks. |
