It started early in the morning yesterday, a cold front from Taldera was washing over Wind Reach and surrounding areas. The storm has most of the residents alittle on their toes. Erade had gotten of class early, and was making her way through the Inner warrens to the Darniva common rooms. For once she wasn't rushing somewhere because she was late. So she took her time, even pausing here and there to look at Wind Reach's architecture. Always rushing through the halls she's never really paid attention to the details before.
She stopped at a particular archway in a junction of the Inner Warrens to inspect the little birds that seemed to have been woven into the stone. Two Chiets were passing her in the hallways, when they saw Erade and lowered their voices."The storm looks to be getting worse." one whispered, not realizing that her voice echoed off the ancient stone. As they got closer to Erade they stopped whispering all together and hurried past her.
Erade pretended to pay them no mind and continue to study the carved stone like it was the most interesting thing in the world. Once they passed she looked around the pillar to watch them scurry off down the hallway. "Wonder if this storm is an ill omen of what to come." Erade whispered herself. Not one to dwell on negativity, she pushed the thought to the back of her mind, to forget and continued on her way.
She decided to go to the Enclave and see if they have gotten any new maps. Travelers/Traders should be coming and going all season to get last minute glassware before Wind Reach is inaccessible in the winter, but first she needed to stop by her room. Etaolle screeched something of a greeting upon her entrance. The little red owl watched with a keen eye as she crossed across the room. As much as she liked the owl a bit of her still was angry with her for killing Noralth, her little songbird she had gotten from her mother.
"Hello, Etaolle" Erade whispered to the bird. Tossing the bird some raw meat and watched her eat for a few ticks before grabbing her mapmaker's kit and heading out.

Outside the common rooms, Erade resumed her leisurely pace towards the Enclave. The enclave was in the inner bowels of Mt. Skyinarta. She could never understand why they had built the library so deep in but Erade secretly thought it was because the written art was not high on the priority list. The yasi arrived at the ancient looking library 45 chimes later. Erade already knew where to go, so went right past the reception area, where several Avora librarians were sorting through books and scrolls. They were use to seeing the little tomboy wandering in the Enclave so paid her no mind.
The Enclave had a very small section dedicated to maps and most were sorely out dated or simple in nature. Erade didn't mind, she still loved to study them and try her hand and replicating them. Of which Erade reminded herself next market day she needed to buy a replacement for her kit. Her charcoal stick was getting low.
Searching through the small bookcase for the maps. She was looking for any new ones, pulling them out, opening them before putting them back on their shelves in disappointment. "Ohhh.. what do we have here?" Erade said as she pulled out a rolled up map. She took it to the near by table and unrolled it using small stones, that were provided as paper weights, to keep it from rolling back up.
The map was titled 'Denval' in a fancy common script at the top. It looked like the title was added after by someone else. She wasn't expecting this, especially since one, the small village was no more and two, the people of Denval rarely dealt with anyone. "How did this get here? And why haven't I've seen it before?" Erade silently questioned. " Well no point in questioning it."
She took a closer look at the map. Unlike the other maps, it had alot more details to it. It was written in denvali so she was unsure of the names of the places it listed but could make out what they were by the pictures. There seemed to be a great hall of sorts, a church, the docks, and a road leading out of the little settlement. She even seemed to make out a bathhouse, a lighthouse and a marketplace.
Staring at the map a bit longer, Erade marveled at the rare find and her luck. |

Erade really couldn't believe her luck. She was torn between getting started on copying the rare map or taking it to one of the Avora and hope one of them knew Denvali. The yasi decided to copy the map rather than waste time looking for an interpreter.
Placing the Denval map above her small blank parchment, she took out her dwindling piece of charcoal. Since this is a local scale map she wouldn't need for inking in the variations of terrains. Erade studied the rare map again before drawing on her own. No one has taught the yasi how to make maps properly it was something she took up herself in hopes to become an Endal one day so she was a bit slower than one who knew what they were doing.
She started drawing the outline of the land and the settlement, where the ocean met with land, looking up every few chimes to consult the master map. Taking out her small ruler from her kit she drew in the grid lines, which ended up a bit crooked. Next she drew the boundaries which didn't seem so big but then again it was just a settlement nothing fancy as a great big city like Avanthal or Syliras. Once she was sure she got this much right she traced back over her light sketching of the previous lines to make them darker and more finalized. Erade rubbed her thumb over some of the lines to give it some shading and depth. The map was coming along pretty well, at least Erade thought so.
The tiny girl next drew in a simple compass of a small cross and the letters for the directions before moving on to the finer details. The great hall was situated a bit inland and seemed to be the only building big enough, besides the chapel, to call a housing system. Next came the chapel, the bathhouse, the marketplace, the docks, and a lighthouse. There was a quite a few other places of interest but Erade was unsure what they were exactly but drew them in regardless. Last thing that was needed was the road that lead into Denval and out.
Erade stood up and held out the small parchment in front of her. Despite small errors it was decent enough where you could make your way through Denval and not get lost, which was a victory in the yasi's book. She placed it back down on the table and signed it in the bottom left corner. Most people signed with their name but Erade thought it was clever to draw a small nightingale instead. Was more of a doodle with stick figure quality but it served her purpose. |

One final thing needed to be done and that was to find an Avora who knew Denvali. Rolling her bow shoulder, she winced in pain. It was still sore from the archery competition a few days ago but she couldn't be concerned with it. Erade wasn't sure that was going to be possible but maybe she can find someone who has been to Denval in the past and knew the layout of the city and knew the correct names. With a new mission in mind, she seeked out her quarry.
The tiny girl came across a burly Inartan that appearance did not suit an Avora that spent many hours in a library, but she suppose those muscle were being put to use since he had a tall stack of books in his arms. "Excuse me, by any chance do you know any Denvali?"
"Look kid, I'm busy here, have to copy all of these books and dont have time for silly nonsense. Besides do I look like I know Denvali?" the man replied curtly.
Erade tried three more times with various Avora and all came up with fairly the same results. Simply put no one had time for the yasi let alone knew Denvali. She had to admit previous enthusiasm was waning and was now being replaced with disappointment and slight irritation. Was it not in these Avora's job description to help those seeking information? If not translate maybe point her in the right direction so she could provide her own answers?
The yasi was not happy to call it quits but it seemed no one will help her out and she highly doubt there was a Denvali to Nari and back again translator book within the Enclave. Slowly rolling up the map, she made her way back to the table where she left her stuff. Erade packed her stuff up and made her way out of the ancient library. She may of not been able to figure out the exact names on the map but she did manage to get a rare map, who knows maybe one day it would come in handy.

Map of Denval (novice copy)
Notes:
The Yasi live in the Yasi Quarter, not the Darniva Commonrooms. Nice simple little thread, couldn’t get much in terms of skills and lore out of it but at least you got some loot.
If you have any questions or problems concerning your grade then please PM me.
