Jervis travels to Syliras encountering something unusual

The Wilderness of Cyphrus is an endless sea of tall grass that rolls just like the oceans themselves. Geysers kiss the sky with their steamy breath, and mysterious craters create microworlds all their own. But above all danger lives here in the tall grass in the form of fierce wild creatures; elegant serpents that swim through the land like whales through the ocean and fierce packs of glassbeaks that hunt in packs which are only kept at bay by fires. Traverse it carefully, with a guide if possible, for those that venture alone endanger themselves in countless ways.

Karliah giggled as she watched the young boy with white hair tilt his head back. She could tell he was young, but being only a few years old herself, human ages still confused her. Though the boy didn't seem all that human, neither did the shortish man that looked a bit fearful. His reaction puzzled Karliah but she didn't let it bother her.

She jumped down from Breeze who wandered off to greet the pony then nibble some grass. She grinned at Jervis, he'd called her pretty. "Just exploring, Zavin lets me as long as I don't stray too far. Of course he didn't say what too far was." She gave a sly smile and strode over to look at the white hair boy. "Hi, you have pretty hair. It looks like the wispy clouds that are in the sky some mornings. What are you doing?" She sat down next to him, her slightly too long legs stretched out in front of her.

Her attention switching back and forth between the two males she glanced back at Jervis. "Why are you so jumpy? Scared of a girl?" She giggled again and turned back to observe Edelweiss fiddling with the fishing pole. The grass tickled the backs of her legs and she wiggled her bare toes. Her hair swished back and forth as various things along the bank caught her attention.

Jervis watched the girl plop down beside Edel. Her actions and mannerisms seeming to make it obvious she had just wandered across the group. Jervis relaxed even as Karliah spoke her jest.

"Why are you so jumpy? Scared of a girl?" Karliah giggled again and turned back to observe Edelweiss fiddling with the fishing pole.

"No not a girl, a persistent and violent old lady actually." Jervis added with a laugh and a sly half grin. "Edelweiss, I'm sorry you had said something about a bait box, I would love to learn more about this contraption. I've plans to set up my own shop and it sounds like something like this would make an excellent item for it. After I finish crafting your spear perhaps you could help me design one for each of us to use before we part ways. It would be something to remind me of you when I'm in Syliras. You seem an interesting person and wish I had time to stay here longer but if I stay too long the old lady will drag me back to the shop somehow.

"Milady, may I beg a favor of you? I find my passion to create overwhelming me with talk of what I need to do. Would you fish here with Edelweiss while I being work on his spear?" Jervis queried casually while looking at the newest member of their party. He remained obviously wary as he could not know for sure if the old lady had gotten to Kevil yet or not. Best play it safe at least til I reach Syliras he thought as he waited for a response.

[Flashback]Syliras, The short route (Edelweiss, Jervis)

Edelweiss wondered if she was disobeying her parent, that wasn’t good. His mother would have had him tied in the barn if he had ever tried that trick, his dad it would have been a very firm few swats and a chores piled up. The comment of his hair gave him pause and Edelweiss self concisely grabbed a few strands and gave it a tug. “Thank you; most just think I dyed it.” He did something between a flinch and a jump as the girl sat beside him.

“I am fishing, or I am trying. This is my first time and I am not very good.” He gave a small tug of his line to try and get another fish but once more his hook and bait were ignored. “I caught one fish but it was too small to eat.” Again his mind wondered to Riverfall, did they truly keep fish there? He really wanted to see them. What, something about old ladies?

He looked at Jervis but didn’t catch the rest only that Jervis was apologizing. “Oh. Not a spear please, if you can a staff. I don’t want to poke holes in things.” He gave a small shiver. All those accidents that could happen. “As for the worms, it’s just a box with a mess netting bottom. It’s so water can drain but the worms can’t come out.” His dad had never let him touch his; he supposed the netting was delicate. He did have nails as a human which he found strange since Elk didn’t have nails. Suddenly hearing Jarvis was going soon, he looked back to the fishing line.

It would be nice if he could catch some food for him before Jervis left. Edelweiss realized Jervis was acting strange. Before he was relaxed but now he seemed as nervous as his mom’s cat around a dog. A tiny frown tugged at Edelweiss lips and he looked at the woman. ‘Is she a threat?’ Looking her over he decided that she didn’t seem to be; in fact she seemed over excited about who knows what. Maybe she didn’t meet a lot of people. ‘So many complicated things I have to remember. It is easier not feeling so much.’ His own inner thoughts were odd scrambled things, but Edelweiss really didn’t have as many emotions to cycle around as a human.

Tugging his line back and forth across the water so he could watch it, he was really surprised when a fish bit and tugged down his line. ‘Do they like moving things, what do they even eat besides worms?’ They couldn’t be getting a lot of those. He knew for a fact worms didn’t like water and drowned. This time he knew a bit more of what to do and started pulling the fish in. When a sudden jerk came from the unknown fish, his line went slack. Eyes widening, Edelweiss hauled everything up only to see half his bait had been stolen but no fish. “Awww.” With a sulk he cast it out again with far less enthusiasm.

"No not a girl, a persistent and violent old lady actually." Jervis added with a laugh and a sly half grin.

Karliah smiled, "Sounds like Aunt Vivi from the Saphire tribe, Zavin is always trying to avoid her. She tries to get him to eat and sit still and clean up, but I like her, she gives me sweets"

She leaned forward and peered into the water, watching intently as the fish escaped Edelweiss, cleverly making off with half the bait. "Clever fish!" Her green eyes grew wide for a moment before she began laughing. "It's okay, I'm sure there are some less clever fish in the river."

Karliah hadn't really paid attention to Jervis' words, she had only recently become proficient in Common, it frustrated her when people put so many words together without pausing to let her catch up, but she was learning fast, perhaps another few months of speaking in Common would allow her to pay attention better.

Karliah quietly spoke in a sing-song voice, in
Pavi, she made a 'gathering' motion with her hands. "Here less-clever fish, there is food for you to eat." She didn't get any closer to the water though, she knew the fish would get scared and swim away.

Note to Mods/Staff!Okay, because our fellow role player has left. (Kicked I think?) We are continuing without them. Please note some slight power playing with the character Jervis is needed to explain why he has suddenly left. As the characters player in no longer here I do not think this will be a problem.. Or I hope. ^^;

I had him leave with the wagon because I didn't want to take advantage of the situation but the fishing pole and bait was left. I don't think someone in a huge hurry would be that slow to gather not only the horse and cart but fishing pole that's in use.

Edelweiss hummed softly, his mind suddenly on his stomach and wondering what sort of sweets. It was a nice distraction from the fact he had lost yet one more fish. “I think all the fish are too smart for me, I wish I knew how to fish.” Jervis had not caught anything but Edelweiss did not think the man was really trying.

He seemed to know fishing well; least to Edelweiss it seemed as such. He was surprised when the female beside him moved her hands, and suddenly Edelweiss smiled and made a fluttering motion with his own hands, fingers closing together. “They could not get away if I had a trap.” He knew only some Pavi, enough that he could get by but nothing that would let him look as if he were born to the nomad like race.

His joy at finding female did was cut to the quick when Jervis suddenly sprung to his feet and shot to his horse. It was like watching a small dust tornado as he gathered his things and just left. His horse running as fast as she could with the car clattering and jarring behind her. “What?” His gray eyes had widened and his mouth hung open before closing with a click. Was it because they spoke in Pavi?

Looking back to his fishing supplies he noticed Jervis had left his behind. “Why don’t you fish with me? I guess he had to go.” It was strange to see a man flee so quickly that he left things behind. He looked again to see not even a sign of road dust was left to mark Jervis had even gone that way.

He sulked and stretched out his legs, his pale skin seeming to glow in the bright light of the high sun. “I was going to ask him to brush me again, it had felt so nice.” He sighed forlornly.

oocSorry its not a very good post, I just had to be a bit clipped there. Promise next one will be better!

Karliah giggled, "You know Pavi!" She said, then switching to common. "I'm trying to learn Common better, but it's so much harder to say everything with words."

She jumped and twisted around to watch Jervis leave, "Oh....I guess he had something important to do, I hope he's okay." She waved to Breeze, who had her front legs partly in the water downstream as she drank the water. The Strider raised her head, snorted, then began to sample the various water plants partially submerged in the river. "She likes food, Zavin says it's because she's growing, I eat a lot too." She grinned. "But at least I learned manners."

"Hmm, I don't really know how to fish. Zavin is training me to care for Striders, that way I can take over his work when he becomes part of the web. I love being around the Striders, when I am one I sometimes just run with them, it's fun and soothing." She leaned forward and poked Edelweiss' leg. "You are very pale. Like the fish women from the north. Compared to Zavin and the others, I am pale, but compared to you I am brown." She grinned then looked at the water. "Look, I think your string moved!"

Edelweiss gave a soft shrug, neither sure of how hard one was over the other. “I know common very well, my parents were human and it’s all they spoke. I learned Pavi from the children around.” He missed them actually, but he was so much older than they. “Maybe you scared him off; he might have a phobia of girls or large horses.” Her horse was bigger than the bright white pony he had.

He looked up to see who she was; seeing it was the horse he gave a soft hum. “Animal’s don’t learn manners; they learn rules. My da’s sheep dog know to turn their back to someone eating because its rule, not something they do for manners.” He had thought it was the dog’s manners but one day his dad got a new female and he had spent weeks training her to do the same. He had asked and his dad told him plain and simple that animals had no manners, only rules. He had been really upset at him but after a few days he understood.

“I don’t know how to fish, but it doesn’t mean you can’t try.” He sulked as he was poked, looking down at his white pants then to the female. “Of course I am pale, my other;” but he stopped short when she mentioned the string. Looking at it he saw it was true and gave it a jerk. It was good he was seated because the jerk he got back nearly sent him in the water. He fell forward onto his chest and stomach, the tip of his nose just hitting the water’s surface. “Oh dear.” His gray eyes were huge at the sight.

He scrambled back but had to fight the fish for every inch he moved from the waters edge. The string hurt as it slowly started to cut into his hand but he kept backing up and tugging. With a slap sound he spotted the fish backside. He was really surprised to see it had spots, he didn’t know fish had spots. Tugging back on the string further he grimaced as he smelled blood, it didn’t take him looking down to know it was his. That was going to hurt if it got to deep. “Help please? Just grab my middle and pull.” He didn’t want this one getting away by pulling him into the river. He couldn’t swim and he had no idea how deep the water was, and he didn’t want to let go of his fishing line.

The fish jumped, it actually jumped, and the thing was huge! Panicked Edelweiss flinched and was promptly tugged forward a step.

Karliah tilted her head at this. "I never knew my parents, just Zavin, I can't imagine growing up without him though." She glanced in the direction Jervis had run again. "He did seem scared when I mentioned Aunt Vivi. Maybe he was afraid she would try to make him clean up and eat..." She trailed off as she watched Edelweiss battle with the fish.

She jumped to her feet and pranced around him as he struggled, not wanting to get in the way, but wanting to be part of the excitement. When he asked for help she grinned and grabbed him around the middle. She began to walk backwards, she was strong from long hours working with the horses. "Let's try to run it into the shallows so it can't swim!" She said, and started to tug Edelweiss in that direction.

While helping him, Karliah noticed that though he appeared shorter when he had been sitting, hes was a good four inches taller than herself. "You're taller than me!" She giggled. Most of the people she knew were her height or shorter.
