Season of Fall, Day 6, 513 AV

Seventeenth Bell

It had been a very unusual day for Jorin. In fact, it'd been an unusual week. Besides the little trip to Rosela's, Jorin had found himself under more pressure than usual to get the inventory sorted for the Amphitheater, so he'd seen less and less of Rinya lately. She was still recovering from her wounds, and the last time he'd seen her he recalled the red scar that went across her arm.

Jorin surmised, from the way she sometimes looked at it, and the feelings he received across their bond, that perhaps she thought the scar did not make her look homely. He wanted to tell her that no scar was ever going to change how he felt about her, but he figured she'd know that already, so he just ignored the injury. Soon the tissue would knit itself together, and all that would be there would be a thin line.

What had truly intrigued Jorin, however, was the summons he'd received a few Bells ago. As he'd been practicing one of the more difficult sword fighting scenes in the upcoming production he'd gotten a message from one of the stage hands that an actress wanted to talk to him. Jorin had been curious about this development; if an actress wanted to talk, they'd just have to stride across the Amphitheater and talk. But no, this actress apparently wanted to meet him at the far northern side of Cliffside Grotto.

Jorin had already had plans for that evening, however, and they really didn't include a detour so far off-course. As far as he was concerned this was an unwanted intrusion, so he really wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible. So he waited for Rinya in the courtyard of the Antiquities Society building.

He'd planned to take Rinya on a tour of the museum, and see the history of the city in which they were currently residing. He himself didn't know much history, not having ever specialized in archaeology or anthropology, but the subject still fascinated him. And he thought she might enjoy a quiet evening among the silent artifacts of the past.

Now those plans seemed ruined. Well, perhaps not. Jorin figured to take Rinya with him to the Cliffside Grotto, find out what this actress wanted, and then continue with a leisurely walk back to the museum, while admiring the lovely fall colors of the Grotto on the way. Perhaps the evening could still be salvaged.

Day 6, Season Fall, 513 AV

Jorin wanted to go out. Well… he wanted to spend an evening with her anyway. Really, this was the first time he had asked to meet her somewhere that didn’t involve someone else coming along. She wasn’t sure if it was entirely significant, or if she was just over thinking things like she tended to do. It was probably the latter. At least—it was easier for her to assume it was the latter. With everything that had been going lately, Rinya wasn’t entirely sure where she stood with Jorin.

There had been a few exchanged kisses—which always sent her heart straight into her throat and caused her to tingle everywhere. But they hadn’t actually talked about where it left them. Friends hardly seemed to be the right title. There was something more to them. Rinya tended to classify it as family. The bond linked the two of them together far more tightly than probably anything ever could. But for some reason that idea felt wrong and correct at the same time. Her instincts took a turn towards an idea she had been bent on ignoring since she had first kissed him. On that both her natural forms seemed to be agreeing easily on. Being bonded to Jorin was one thing, but this…

Well for the moment she wasn’t going to worry about it too much. Dressing herself in the same peach dress he saw her in the day before—he seemed to rather like the look—Rinya set out to meet Jorin at courtyard of the Antiquities Society building. Rinya generally had no interest in the history of a place unless it was going to be directly linked to her, but spending time with Jorin lately had been difficult. Raistren had her doing little jobs here and there around the Warren while her arm healed, and the Amphitheater was certainly keeping Jorin busy as of late.

Glancing around the courtyard as she entered, she spotted Jorin almost immediately and she smiled softly. A smile that if she was completely honest with herself she only ever gave him. It seemed... far too sappy to admit to though. She still had too much pride to admit that Jorin had tendencies to make her soft. Gathering herself up she approached him, cocking her head to the side slightly with a grin and pointed at the building in front of them.

”You realize that you are going to have to read everything to me right?” Rinya teased lightly, trying to ignore the feeling welling up in her chest. She had missed time alone with him. If she wasn’t careful he’d pick up on it.

Season of Fall, Day 6, 513 AV

Rinya was wearing the dress he'd seen that day when they'd gone to Rosela's. It still looked stunning on her, and Jorin took a moment to appreciate how it accentuated Rinya's form. Jorin had turned to face Rinya just as he noticed a small, shy smile on her face, the same one that always lit her up like a firefly. He returned the smile and walked over to her, and his gaze followed her finger as she grinned and pointed at the building.

"You realize that you are going to have to read everything to me right?" she teased, and Jorin laughed lightly.

"Of course, Rinya," he chuckled, "For you, I'd read an entire library if you wanted me to."

Jorin could feel emotions swelling in both of them. This would have been such a good day...

"There's been a slight change of plans, unfortunately," Jorin said apologetically.

"Someone at work told me that an actress wanted to meet me at the far north of Cliffside Grotto. I'd ignore it and still spend time with you, but you haven't seen how actresses can get when they think you're blowing them off," Jorin half-joked. Ok, so the actresses didn't kill you, but they can sure make you wish you were dead.

Jorin just took Rinya's hand and drew her into a light embrace, being careful not to jostle her injured arm too much. Then he kissed her lightly on the lips.

"We can come back later. But come! The Clifside Grotto is pretty nice in the Fall anyway."

As Jorin led the way to the Grotto, he tried to make up for their not being in the museum by telling Rinya about his day. He regaled her with stories about flubbed lines, and pratfalls during practice, and someone slipping a toad into someone else's lunch. It was just like the troupe again. And of course, the wonderful joys of actually acting, of putting on a colorful costume and going out onto the stage, eyes bright and arms outstretched, welcoming the audience to yet another evening of drama and entertainment.

Jorin didn't care about being top billing. He could care less if he was in the spotlight, he just wanted to entertain. To see the faces of his audience light up in joy, of seeing his performance brighten their day, even if just for a few Bells.

The blazing red hues of Cliffside Grotto slowly came into view, and Jorin swept his arm melodramatically as he grinned at Rinya. "See?" he said, "Isn't it just magnificent?"

Jorin continued to lead Rinya into the Grotto. Somewhere in his mind, he recalled that the Grotto was also a romantic destination for many Riverfall residents. He mentally shrugged. So much the better; even though he hadn't picked this place, he figured he might as well go with it. Jorin gave Rinya a somewhat teasing smile as they walked through the Grotto hand-in-hand.

"Jorin!" rang out a cry, and his head shot to the right. And standing there was a sight he'd never thought he'd see.

She stood only about as tall as Rinya, and had tousled brown hair that fell to her shoulders. Dark, but bright eyes were set into a round, smooth face, full lips curled into an easy smile, and her complexion had just a touch of gold. She wore a simple light-blue dress, with a few white frills, and a large bow tied around her waist. Her hair loose was worn loose, with only a simple sparking crystal pin stuck behind her left ear.

"Farline!" he cried, face expressing his surprise. He turned to Rinya and gave her an apologetic smile.

"Farline Darfi," he said, by way of introduction. "She is an actress with the Traveling Thespians. You remember, the troupe I was in? She was instrumental in helping me become a better actor."

Farline laughed, a high, tinkling laugh, demurely putting a hand to her mouth as she did. "Oh I don't know if that's true, Jori dear," she replied brightly. "Aren't you going to introduce me to your friend?"

Friend. Jorin wondered if that was all he and Rinya were. Despite their conversations, their kisses, the holding of hands, Rinya seemed unwilling to take any steps forward. Jorin was willing to wait, but where did that leave them? What to call what they had together?

"Ah yes, of course, this is Rinya, I am her bondmate," Jorin replied, with a silent groan. He'd given up. For lack of a good term to describe their relationship he decided to just use the one relationship he knew they did have. Farline's eyes merely twinkled with some hidden joke.

"Oh?" she asked, giving them both a conspiratorial wink. "Well, I'm sure you two get along famously. But Jori, shouldn't you come home?"

Jorin could feel his blood almost freeze at those words. Come home. Where was home now? Was it his condo in the Windswept Condos? Was it at his childhood house, where his parents lived?

"I was kicked out, remember?" he groused, trying to remind Farline of the circumstances of his departure. "Eric did it himself. Said I didn't belong on his stage."

Farline smiled, her full lips curling at the edges and her eyes crinkling just so. She approached Jorin, all but ignoring Rinya's presence, and without warning threw her arms around Jorin's neck and hugged him, pressing against him as she did so.

Then she backed off, and laughed brightly. "Oh Jori, you don't ever change do you?" she said as her laughter died down somewhat.

"Trelaine was just angry, Jori. And you did flub more than a few lines at that last performance. But, that doesn't mean we don't want you!" Farline pouted at the last statement, looking at Jorin with large, clear eyes.

Jorin sighed. "I can't go back, Farline. You know me, I can't go back, not after what Eric said. I'm at the Amphitheater now ... I can't just abandon them."

And I can't just abandon Rinya, either, Jorin thought. But he did not say it, just squeezed Rinya's hand a bit to assure her. He hoped she'd get at least something from their bond to reassure her he'd never leave.

"Trelaine doesn't know, does he?" he queried Farline with a somewhat mischievous smile, but it wasn't really a question. Farline's eyes fell a bit and she flushed prettily. "If Eric wanted me back, he'd come for me himself. Why are you really here, Farline?"

"The troupe wasn't the same without you," Farline admitted, fingering her hair in her nervousness. "We missed your antics. Your stupid jokes. Your energy. You brought life to our art. We missed you."

Farline looked back up, and smiled softly.

"I missed you..."

Day 6, Season Fall, 513 AV

"Of course, Rinya," he chuckled, "For you, I'd read an entire library if you wanted me to."

Jorin always had the right words to make her blush. And usually she would try and change the subject when he said such things, but instead Rinya just grinned brighter. She had been spending entirely too much time in her own head as of late, and with Jorin she didn’t have to worry about it. About anything really.

A change of plans didn’t entirely bother her really, at least until he mentioned someone wanted to see him. But if he had to work with this person, she figured it would be easier to just get things over with. Jorin still wanted to enjoy the evening regardless, and it didn’t sound like the actress was to be joining them anyways.

She caved easily as Jorin pulled her close, warmed by his embrace. He was gentle with her arm, even though it really didn’t bother her too much anymore. Even with the gentlest of kisses, she felt her heart speed up. It wasn't fair that kissing him was that easy. But they had things to do, and as much she wanted to just stay where they were, she clasped his hand lightly and let him lead her towards the Grotto.

Rinya remained quiet as Jorin described his day to her. Laughing and shaking her head as he mentioned someone falling on a toad. She yearned to see him on the stage, having missed his first appearance. It made him so happy; he looked like one of the stars he so often compared her to. All smiles and happiness, she couldn’t feel a shred of any negative emotions. Rinya pressed a smile into his shoulder as they came upon the Grotto.

”Truly beautiful.” Rinya remarked. The fading light seemed to make all the colors come alive. Moving her eyes from the colors, she stared up at him a moment—and opened her mouth to tell him something. Something so important that she had avoided it for quite some time now, and probably something he really needed to hear.

"Jorin!"

The voice interrupted her. Turning slightly, she watched Jorin light up with surprise. Farline? From Jorin’s previous troupe? She wracked her brain slightly, the name was very familiar. But she couldn’t quite place it. Jorin had spoken of his troupe before, but never names. Then why was this name so familiar?

"Aren't you going to introduce me to your friend?"

Blinking slightly she jolted out of her memories, Rinya felt Jorin’s hesitation. The silence was almost deafening. Rinya was considering answering before he did, but he claimed her as his bondmate. Which was a decent title by her standards, but for some reason she had expected him to say something else… something she had been thinking about all morning. The woman winked at them and Rinya cocked her head to the side. Of course they got along famously, they were bonded.

As Jorin and Farline debated about home, Rinya could feel his confusion. Almost a sense of being lost, and he argued that he had been thrown out. She remembered his words from some time ago, about losing another family.

And then the woman threw her arms around Jorin’s neck. Rinya felt a sharp stab of—jealousy—but she kept it at bay. The last time she had acted out on her jealousy, she had made Jorin sad, and that was the last thing she wanted to do... ruin the night. Her temper ruined enough of them. She vaguely wondered if Jorin felt her jealousy, as he squeezed her hand. Rinya just gripped his fingers a little harder.

Instead Rinya tried to focus on the woman in front of them. She was beautiful there was no doubt about that. And apparently she wasn’t the only one who turned red at Jorin’s well timed words.

"I missed you..."

Rinya could feel something cold slither down her spine. The words struck a memory in the back of her mind. Farline was the woman that Jorin had been in love with before. She could remember it now with clarity as he described his first time of being in love. And suddenly Rinya had no idea what to think. The woman wanted Jorin to go home… with her. And even though Jorin was refusing for the moment, she realized that he had every right to choose that path. They were his family too.

Shifting awkwardly on her feet, Rinya did her best to ignore the heavy feeling settling into the bottom of her gut. She knew Jorin wouldn’t leave her behind—she wouldn’t let him anyways. But this woman represented the very thing she had tried to avoid before. Farline was a good choice for Jorin. She enjoyed his arts. Farline could give Jorin everything she couldn’t. Swallowing past the knot in her throat, Rinya leaned up so she could whisper in his ear.

”It’s okay to go home Jorin. Where ever that may be. I will follow, you know that.” Of all the things left in her life, Jorin was the one real home she had. She wasn’t going to entirely give him up because another woman may want her chance to recover something the two of them once had. She could live with being his friend. Maybe this was the hint that she was to take… that she was meant to be just his friend. The idea made her heart clench tightly, liking someone was trying to squeeze it. But she shoved the feelings aside. This was an important choice for Jorin, and she wasn't going to let her feelings hinder it.

Season of Fall, Day 6, 513 AV

Jorin didn't know what to say, or how to answer. Farline's statement about missing him stirred up many old emotions he had for her. He'd admired her, he'd worshipped her. She'd become his inspiration, and to be honest, even after her rejection, he still admired her from afar. Like a beautiful jewel. To be seen, but not approached.

And she missed him? Jorin had felt the jolt of jealousy from Rinya when Farline had unexpectedly embraced him. It'd come as much of a surprise to him as it must have to Rinya, and he could not blame her for how she felt. He would feel the same - or worse - if some old romantic partner of Rinya's had just randomly embraced her in front of him. Nevertheless, Jorin couldn't very well admonish Farline for it; technically she hadn't done anything wrong.

"It’s okay to go home Jorin. Where ever that may be. I will follow, you know that," Rinya had whispered in his ear. Farline just giggled at that, smirking slightly at Rinya and himself. He suspected they probably looked less like bondmates and more like ... Jorin couldn't finish the thought. There was so much to think about.

"Now, now, no whispering sweet nothings, Rinya dear," Farline teased lightly, swaying her hips a bit. "That's hardly fair to poor Jori, don't you think?"

Jorin's mouth set into a firm line. "Farline," he began, "you know me. Remember that time when we were at the feeding troughs? And Eric kept trying to get me to clean the stalls?"

Farline's high tinkling laughter was back. "Oh yes," she cried with amusement, "You poor, poor dear, you were just covered in manure!"

Jorin smiled a bit at the memory. It was pretty funny in hindsight. Then he shook his head.

"My point is, I never cleaned the stalls that day," Jorin explained. "Principle means a lot to me, Farline. You know that."

Farline smiled gently. "Yes, Jori, I do know that. You don't have to make the decision today. Or even this week. But you should know, the Thespians leave by the end of the season. And we start packing by the middle of Fall."

Farline then threw Rinya a brilliant smile, eyes sparkling, before turning back to Jorin. "Jorin, be a dear and fetch my things, won't you? I'd left a few of my costumes a bit down the way, I had come here from a show and did not want to keep you waiting."

Jorin wondered briefly at Farline's request. It made little sense; but then actresses in general made little sense. He shrugged and gave Rinya a helpless look. He didn't want to be rude, so he tried to transmit his apology across the bond as best he could, then released Rinya's hand and walked off in the direction that Farline had indicated.

As soon as Jorin was out of earshot, Farline sidled up to Rinya, flipping her hair behind her ear and tossing her a conspiratorial grin and a little laugh. It was not like the laugh she'd used before, high and tinkling. This one was more airy and light, like she was laughing at a private joke.

"Oh it is just so easy!" she grinned at Rinya, winking at her partner in crime. "So you're the girl he's in love with?" she asked. Farline did not sound upset by it at all. "Tell me, have you gotten him to buy you clothes yet?"

Day 6, Season Fall, 513 AV

Rinya did her best not to frown at the woman. Sweet nothings? What did that even mean? Rinya didn’t even want to try and figure out what that whole spiel was even about. There was something… off about Farline. Rinya couldn’t put her finger on it. But for now she wasn’t going to think about it. She had misjudged Kirsi—not that they were exactly friends now—and if Jorin had feelings for such a person, she could only imagine how hard it was for him to hear that Farline missed him. And Rinya never admitted to anything of the sorts. In comparison Rinya realized she was perhaps keeping Jorin a little too far out of reach… if that even mattered anymore

As they joked over Jorin’s “principles”, Rinya started to feel slightly out of place. Like an overstayed welcome. And it was starting to nag at her pride a little, standing in the middle of a beautiful grotto while Jorin and his first love chatted up about old times. Behind the unusual crushing weight of feelings she was purposely hiding from Jorin, it was rearing its ugly head. But before it could even get anywhere, Farline was—sending Jorin off to collect her things?

Jorin didn’t seem to know what to do about it either. He was torn, and Rinya wasn’t sure how to help him through that. But he seemingly made up his mind and let go of her hand. The cold tingle along her spine suddenly spread across her body at the loss of his hand. For some reason Rinya couldn’t identify, she felt like she had suddenly lost Jorin in a far more complicated way than she was prepared for. Wiggling her fingers slightly, she keenly watched him walk away. She really was getting soft over her human.

"Oh it is just so easy!"

Rinya snapped out of her depressing thoughts and looked at Farline. She had shifted, and all of Rinya’s instincts told her that this woman was not to be trusted. "So you're the girl he's in love with?"

Rinya frowned this time, without fear that Jorin would see her. Jorin had never actually said he was in love with her. Yes… there had been admission of love… but there were many types of love. Being in love was… well petch it all that was a whole lot more complicated. She supposed they had been slowly working towards that idea, as she never outright refused Jorin’s idea of being more. But by the minute Rinya was starting to realize they really needed to talk about this. Neither of them were going to get around it much longer. And then there was the whole idea if there was much point in hashing out the idea. Jorin and Farline—it wasn’t something Rinya had a right to stand against.

"Tell me, have you gotten him to buy you clothes yet?" Rinya’s eyes snapped so quickly to Farline’s face, that everything else was a blur. Instantly Rinya realized what her instincts were trying to tell her. She wasn’t like other Kelvic, able to tell the difference in emotions by scent. But something still rang through her insides. Farline was not who she pretended to be for Jorin… did he even know about it?

”You’re toying with him.” Rinya growled out through gritted teeth. It wasn’t a question, it was a fact. Rinya’s could feel the anger rising in her veins. The cold feeling of Jorin’s disappearance replaced by white hot pokers, and this time Rinya did not hide her feelings. If Jorin felt it, so be it. Reaching out, Rinya poked the woman in the chest.

”You will not toy with him do you understand me? He loved you at one time… maybe still does. If you have any intention of being with him other than because you love him back, then you will sorely regret it.” Rinya rooted herself to the spot she was standing. The reasoning behind throttling the petching woman would be so easy to convince herself of—but she had Jorin to think about for once. Instead of shying away from her feelings, Rinya stood her ground. She was just glad Jorin wasn’t around to question her about it.

"You’re toying with him," Rinya had growled. If Farline noticed Rinya's abrupt change in attitude, she didn't show it. Instead, she continued to smile and gave another airy laugh.

"Well, of course I am dear," she replied nonchalantly, smoothing out her dress with small, well-manicured hands.

"Silly boys like Jorin are just so easy. It's almost a shame." She grinned. "Almost."

Farline's smile dropped a bit when Rinya poked a finger in her chest, biting out, "You will not toy with him do you understand me? He loved you at one time ... maybe still does. If you have any intention of being with him other than because you love him back, then you will sorely regret it."

Farline was silent for a moment. Fortunately, she'd left her things fairly far away; though that was no deliberate, she now had at least twenty chimes to understand what exactly this "Rinya" was getting at.

"Well of course he loves me, Rinya," Farline eventually laughed. "How else am I supposed to use him otherwise? Look, Rinya, you're fairly attractive yourself."

Farline looked the other woman over critically. "You've got a pretty face, excellent complexion, nice musculature and good hips. Your bust line could use a little work, but nobody's perfect." Farline jiggled her own fairly significant bust as she said this.

"A woman like you could get so many men to fall at your feet. You don't need a loser like Jorin. Take my advice, dear, take what you need from him and find someone better."

Farline's eyes gleamed mischievously. "Like one of those Akalaks. Ooooh, have you seen their muscles?!" Farline's face took on a dreamy look. Then she turned to Rinya and grinned almost wickedly.

"It'd be easy for you anyway," she commented lightly. "Poor Jori is so in love with you. How did you manage that by the way? he wasn't even that way with me." Farline giggled, giving Rinya a playful wink.

Day 6, Season Fall, 513 AV

Rinya didn’t know what to make of Jorin’s first love. For some reason she just couldn’t see him falling for a woman like this. But then, it was becoming glaringly obvious that she didn’t let him see this side of her. And that left Rinya in quite the rut.

"Well of course he loves me, Rinya," Farline’s laugh was starting to grate on Rinya’s nerves. Her fingers twitched and she had to ball them up tightly, digging her fingernails into the palm of her hand, to keep from just plain punching the woman. Rinya was generally a violence free kind of person, even with Kirsi Rinya had never made an attempt to hurt the woman. But Farline was bringing out a more dangerous side to her.

Maybe it was the fact that the woman had absolutely no respect for Jorin. Like everyone else in existence, he had his faults. But how does one twist a gentle soul like his? Jorin was resilient, but she could easily see him being torn apart by a woman like Farline. Devoting his life to someone who thought he was no better than dirt. She couldn’t imagine loving someone like that and finding out they could care less about you.

As Farline looked her over, Rinya couldn’t help but feel slightly exposed. While Jorin looked at her as if she was someone special, Farline looked at the complete physical traits. Rinya never considered herself ugly, but the way she described her… she kind of wished she didn’t have so many “good” traits.

”My bust line is just fine thank you very much.” Rinya huffed indignantly. What did her breasts matter anyways? Watching Farline jiggle her own, Rinya couldn’t help but roll her eyes. Seriously… what fixation did this woman have with breasts?

"A woman like you could get so many men to fall at your feet. You don't need a loser like Jorin. Take my advice, dear, take what you need from him and find someone better."

Rinya froze as Farline described Jorin. She knew that the woman did not think much of her bondmate… that was obvious. But Rinya didn’t really think that she thought so little of him. But the fact that Farline expected Rinya to see Jorin just the same was… heartbreaking. To Rinya there was no one better. Even if Jorin never wanted to go past being friends, there was no one better for her. He would take care of her just because he was that good hearted. And even if she was terrible at showing it, she would spend her life hoping to make him feel the same.

”I already have an Akalak chasing me like a dog thank you very much. But if you appreciate them so much I’ll be sure to send him your way.” Rinya’s friendly tone was obviously mocking Farline. The woman was ridiculous, and she wasn’t sure how much more she could put up with. ”I’m sure he’ll have you knocked up for a price.”

"Poor Jori is so in love with you. How did you manage that by the way? he wasn't even that way with me."

Rinya wasn’t sure if she could believe the words coming from Farline’s mouth. The woman was an obviously born liar, if she was willing to do anything to get what she wanted, Rinya wasn’t sure she wanted to play that game. Jorin was not a piece to move around on a table. Instead Rinya ignored the question, unwilling to give the woman any kind of ammo against Jorin. Honestly, if he was in love with her, Rinya had no idea how she did it. So she just circled Farline slowly, taking her turn to scrutinize the woman.

”You’re kind of pathetic aren’t you?” Rinya could feel her snarky side showing, and it was probably low of her, but she couldn’t help it. Defending Jorin seemed to come naturally. ”All your life you spend getting men to do things for you by looks… whatever will you do when you’ve grown old—and no longer have the pretty looks to get what you want? Who would take a sad little creature like you in?”

Stopping in front of Farline, Rinya set eyes in a fierce glare. It was hard not to sneer at the woman, but really there wasn’t any point. They were two very different women; Rinya just wished Jorin could see this. Then again… that would probably break his heart all over again. That was the very last thing Rinya could ever wish for. Sighing slightly, Rinya shook her head and looked away from Farline.

”If you hurt Jorin again, I swear I will make you regret it. He’s not my bondmate for nothing… regardless of how he does—or doesn’t—feel for me. I will not let you hurt him again.”

"You’re kind of pathetic aren't you?" Rinya nearly spat out. "All your life you spend getting men to do things for you by looks... whatever will you do when you've grown old — and no longer have the pretty looks to get what you want? Who would take a sad little creature like you in?"

Farline considered Rinya for a moment. Her smile tightened a bit, and her eyes stopped sparkling, taking on a more dangerous look of her own.

"Of course beauty fades with time, my dear," she replied. Despite her gentle tone, there was something ... off about it. Like as though she was telling Rinya her beauty would fade eventually too.

"That is why we must take what we can, when we can. And why not, when men are so willing to give?"

Farline simply leaned a bit on her foot and cocked her head to the side when Rinya glared at her, and more-or-less sneered at her.

"If you hurt Jorin again, I swear I will make you regret it. He’s not my bondmate for nothing… regardless of how he does—or doesn’t—feel for me. I will not let you hurt him again," Rinya threatened. Farline gave a little sigh.

"Don't tell me you actually feel something for that poor sap," she teased, her good humor returning a bit, despite the growing tension between the two.

"Look ... Rinya, was it? Let me tell you something about men like Jorin," Farline said, leaning in as though to tell a secret.

"They just get in the way," she whispered, and grinned. "In the end, if you stick with him, you'll be stuck with a man who's not as tall, or as handsome, or as strong, or as wealthy as you could potentially have."

Farline shrugged as she leaned back again. "It's not to say that men like Jorin don't have their uses though," she commented with another one of her laughs.

"Did you see how he ran off to fetch my things? So adorable, like a little puppy, doing anything for just a scrap of love." Farline giggled.

"So pathetic!"

Day 6, Season Fall, 513 AV

"That is why we must take what we can, when we can. And why not, when men are so willing to give?"

So willing? It wasn’t just Jorin she found useless… it was all of them, all men. Farline was certainly lucky that her father was not around to see such a woman. He found such creatures to be useless… they did not actually contribute anything to the pack—or rather any society—they would be better off left alone in the wildlands. But Farline certainly seemed to believe in whatever she was talking about. Rinya had no idea how to just take from someone. Taking left you exposed… she just hadn’t realized it yet. Some day someone would play Farline and she would never even know it until it was too late. It was kind of sad actually.

"Don't tell me you actually feel something for that poor sap," Rinya could feel the shift inside her, but not that of her animal form. But the instinct certainly seemed to be animal like. " In the end, if you stick with him, you'll be stuck with a man who's not as tall, or as handsome, or as strong, or as wealthy as you could potentially have." Her eyes flashed a dangerous emotion, a warning that Rinya couldn’t get out of her mouth.

"Did you see how he ran off to fetch my things? So adorable, like a little puppy, doing anything for just a scrap of love." Farline giggled. "So pathetic!"

Rinya snapped. She knew her temper could be bad, but not like this. Despite the injury to her left arm, Rinya swung before she could even think about it. Not a slap, like most women. It was a straight out fist that she didn’t even aim. Her knuckles hit the girl’s cheek and for a moment time seemed to stop.

And then her hand tingled… then spread pain from the tips of her fingers all the way back through her injured arm. Clutching her arm to her chest with her good one, Rinya cursed brightly over and over. Rinya was a hunter, not a physical fighter. She wondered vaguely as the pain seared across her arm, if she had even done any damage. Probably not… her arm was losing muscle from not having done much archery as of late.

The guilt that was starting to well up in her chest all of a sudden was terrible too. Jorin was not going to be happy about this. But the damned woman just wouldn’t stop! The violence may not have been the answer, but she couldn’t stand the way she spoke about Jorin. Instead of a flight as her usual instinct to conflict, Rinya chose to fight. She wanted to defend her…

Of all things… she wanted to defend her mate. From everything—especially what Farline enjoyed putting him through. And her torn emotions barely let her concede to the fact that she just admitted how she felt about Jorin. One word easily summed up her feelings...

Staring down at her arm, Rinya could feel that something tore beneath the skin slightly, but the skin itself remained intact. Probably another few sore muscles and bruising to go with that scar. Lovely…

"Petching woman..." Rinya growled.
