Levolor the Blind
Physical Information
Race: Human
Birthday & Age : Day 77, Season of Fall, 478; 30 years old.
Gender: Male
Physical Description
Levolor is slightly under six feet tall and is a gaunt 160 lbs. His hair is long and brown. His beard is neatly kept. His eyes are, well, not there. He keeps the sockets covered with a bandage tied around his head. His skin is weathered from the time he spends on the streets. This gives him the appearance of a man a decade older than he actually is. He wears a rough shirt, leather trousers, and leggings with sandals. Over this he wears a heavy hooded cloak. He carries his worldly goods with him in a large leather bag strapped to his back, a bagpipe on his shoulder, and always has a wooden staff with him.
He keeps company with a large but amiable black dog.
Character Concept
Levolor will be the first to tell you that he makes his living as an entertainer, whether it is being a street beggar with an entertaining patter or a musician singing in bars and brothels. He plays the gregarious fool, always ready with a story or a song.
His sorrows, of which he has many, he keeps to himself.
And he often earns his coin in other ways, though he's not so quick to admit this to anybody. A blind beggar / bard tends to become part of the background for most people. Levolor hears much and forgets little. Sometimes what he hears is important enough that others will pay to learn it. And sometimes he's been paid to find out secrets. In either case he is careful about what information he does pass on since his ethics drive him to right wrongs (or better yet, prevent them) but not to do harm.
He appears poor and often is. Levolor cultivates the latter image because it serves his end of being unnoticed; but he has a generous and sympathetic nature when it comes to his fellow street folk. These people in turn bring Levolor tidbits of information he might not gain otherwise.
In the ten years since he has lost his sight he's cycled through rage, self-pity, and finally acceptance of his fate. But he hasn't given up hope of finding a way to restore his eyes.
Character History
Levolor's orgin is on the plains of Cyphrus. He was the second son of a chieftain who amiably accepted his lot to live in the shadow of his older brother. But his sister-in-law, for reasons of her own, poisoned his brother's mind against him. She whispered that Levolor coveted the chieftanship and plotted to that end. He'd made advances to her, she suggested. His brother, in a rage, tore out Levolor's eyes and left him to die alone on the plain.
He didn't die, of course. Levolor overcame the agony of his wounds. He grubbed for roots to feed himself and drank from fetid puddles. He made fire at night to keep away the predators. And he moved. It was ingrained in his culture that standing still was to invite death. "May Death work to find you" was the proverb. Using the heat of the morning sun on his face to establish direction, he made his way northward toward the Suvan Sea. There, he reckoned, if he could keep the coast on his left, he might find his way to Syliras.
What he thought he might find when he got there wasn't clear, even to himself. Levolor only knew that a blind outcast had no place in clan society. They might, as they often did when they came across him, give him some food out of pity but none would take him in.
It was winter by the time he first smelled salt in the air. He was cold, starving, and exhausted. At some deep level he accepted he would die, but nonetheless pressed on. It was better to die on his feet, pushing toward his goal. Sometime later, under the roar of the winter storm, he heard the crash of waves on the shore.
"I have made it. Ottlik may have ridden his horse-that-strides-seven-leagues to the four corners of the world, but I, Levolor the Blind, have crossed half the length of the clan lands sightlessly with only the sun as my guide and my friend. And though none will ever know of this, that is something."
He stood there, determined that death would find him still on his feet, until he was finally overcome and fell.
And there he was found by the gods Kelwyn (http://www.mizahar.com/lore/Kelwyn). If ever there was a lost cause, it was Levolor at this moment. They transported him to Syliras. At first Levolor was confused. He'd not asked for aid from the gods nor expected any. And when he woke they had mocked him as if his blindness was a joke. Then something changed in him. The rage and self-pity he had bottled up inside ebbed away. Acceptance of his fate replaced it along with the sense that a great cosmic joke had been played on him and he best learn to laugh along with the rest of the world.
Alone on the streets of Syliras, he took to begging. Then found he could sing the songs of his people in exchange for pretty coin. He soon acquired some bagpipes and was a favorite hire to play mournful tunes at funerals.
He prospered as much as a beggar and itinerant musician could. Then he learned of a plot against a wealthy (is there any other kind?) merchant. He warned her and was rewarded for his effort. Thus he found a new way to supplement his income. To a select few he became a purveyor of information.
Now he has heard tell of the healers of Mura. Levolor's heart burns with the hope that his sight can be restored. He has sold his home and keeps only the possessions he can carry. He is now ready to travel to the island and ask for their aid.
